for random maps, I'd probably choose castle mostly because I can always get a hero with leadership.
Now why would I want leadership? Because in almost all randoms you'll find 2 or three extra towns.

I think rampart is the best "good" city for both ToH and random maps because of many good heroes, and golds with 1-4 level spell imunity.Also when playing random map on expert difficulty it is possible to build both capitol and dragon cliffs on week 2, while castle will have angels on week 3, and also rampart can build only elves and take many guarded goods on map and its great advantage on poor map with expert difficulty - my favourite style of random map  . Castle has strongest army, but only few good heroes (orrin and loynis) and its vulnerable to magic, griffin conservatories is great advantage of castle on random maps, but its not reliable advantage and all advantages of rampart are reliable and so I like it most. Tower just sucks

My choice goes to Tower.
1. My favorite town.
2. Using Master Gremlins and Golems I can win first battles with no loses (+magic).
3. Even with the smallest army (lots of money needed) I am difficult opponent:
- 2 shooters + nagas (I assume I am def. and youre attacking)
- Solmyr and magic in general (do I have to say more)
4. The truth is that everything depends on luck:
- morale/luck in the right moment
- kind of random artifact that you get
- kind of random creatures that are guarding res.
etc.
When both players know the map it all comes down to LUCK.
Damn I hate it!

Yeah... I like this post.
Anyway, based on the actual choices, I'd pick Rampart or Tower. Rampart with Jenova because of the money she provides and because of the Treasury as well.
If I picked Tower, it would involve lots of Master Gremlins going off with one hero and trying to take the unoccupied Tower as soon as possible.

wutz the difficulty playing on? that matters a lot
in most cases i'd pick castles reason being i wanna win
