[Mod] Playing in windowed mode
By default, the game is in fullscreen, but it can be played in windowed mode. This is not without issues, but it allows in particular to let the game run in the background while doing something else.
To make it more accessible, this mod adds the options directly inside the game video options panel. The added texts are in english. The mod is specific to a game version, using it on another version is very likely to mess some things up.
1.6: http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/downloads/mods/option_fullscreen_1.6.h5u
3.0: http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/downloads/mods/option_fullscreen_3.0.h5u
If you want to switch to windowed mode, you should:
- check "Use HW cursor" (software cursor is shifted by the height of the title bar, so it's uneasy to point)
- uncheck "Fullscreen", obviously
- check "Work in background" (if you so wish) - it also works minimized
- set your resolution: this will be the window's size
The are some known issues:
- the mouse will first be blocked inside the window. Alt-tab out once and it should be fine
- when the mouse is outside the window (even when it is not active, unless minimized), the map will scroll - this is annoying
- if you open the console, get the focus to another window and come back, you'll be able to activate objects behind the console. Don't, or you won't be able to input new text in the console.
Tell me what you think, and how you use it if you do. If you have ideas to solve the issues, or other techniques, please let me know as well.

Thanks a lot, I've always alt-tabbed a lot. I'll try the mod on the next weekend.

I don't know if it is related but is there a way to have a true widescreen display using mods or something else (not a stretched screen that makes avery unit look like a dwarf )

Just a short review:
Switching to windowed from fullscreen and back works flawlessly. The game runs fine in windowed mode and allows quick switches to other windows. I prefer the option to not let it work in background as it prevents the game from scrolling.
The only small flaw is the position of the mouse cursor which is a bit misplaced even when using the smaller hardware cursors. This can be a bit confusing but after 10 Minutes of playing the brain does automaticly compensate this issue.
All together this mod is the perfect choice when doing multiple things parallel, like chatting or compiling code. For CPU intense work a dual core is mandatory.

Better widescreen support is something that only Nival can add in a patch. If you're lucky, 3.1 will address your concerns.

Ok, It would really be too bad if they finally don't do this. I'm sure it is not so hard for them.

Well there are rumors on Celestial Heavens that they are working on widescreen support...did anything change on that with 1.6?

Sadly no. In fullscreen mod, "work in background" does not work. That's why I disabled it in this case in the options.

This is a great mod indeed. Especially for those huge maps where it takes forever for the AI to act.
I have a problem with it. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and I play the game at 1024x768. The problem is with the mouse cursor.
Aparently the pixels your mouse is positioned are shifted up by one or smth. In order to activate an item (get the cursor to show the proper animation) you have to click higher than the actual place.
This is really annoying in the combat screen where you end up messing up the movement of your creatures on the map my misclicking...
Can this be solved?

If the offset is in the right direction (I don't quite understand which it is in), could you use the game cursor and move the actual cursor within the cursor file, leaving blank space, perhaps?

In fact, if you see your cursor on an item, it will really be several pixels under it. If you want to click on a specific area, you have to click about half a centimeter above that place/item which indeed is very annoying

This is probably caused from the titlebar of the window. Replacing the icons with ones that have an additional transparent area at the top with the same height as the titlebar could work but needs to be tested.
Unfortunately the height of the titlebar is not constant and varies with different window styles or font sizes. A collection of several icons where the user can select the ones with the appropriate height would probably be the fastest solution.

The only quick fix I can provide is the advice to use hardware cursors. It should help (but the cursors are smaller).
Patch 3.1 is expected to add official support for windowed mode. I expect that it will be correctly handled then.

this mod is includes in the game with version TotE 3.1
what is your version of the game?
for TotE 3.0 put the mod in UserMODS folder if extension is .h5u or data folder if .pak
for version under 3.0 as HoF and etc, I never tested it but UserMODs folder doesn't exist for, so you must at least replace extention by .h5m and put the mod in Maps folder.

Ah alright i think i've got it.
Well i dont have TotE just the original game (with 1.6 installed), but i guess i just put it in the maps folder anyway and i change the file extentions to .h5m instead of the .rar
Edit: Its works. Thanks a lot, a very usefull mod. Greetings Chucktheone
