Depending on which you have : Pc or consoles, and which consoles you have... I would say Final Fantasy (any of them about).  Also you might want to go to Gametap.com and get a membership.  It cost a little, but will show you many great rpg titles of a lot of different platforms, and you can try them before you buy them.  Another option (except they don't carry PC games) is Gamefly.com.  Rent them, try them, if you like them you can buy them.  Personally have saved a horde of money this way, because some I thought I would like turned out to be HORRIBLE.  Though I think gamefly is america only.

As for reviews of the final fantasy series.
Though most have a simalar theme, they do a good job of making each different and unique.  They are generally ahead of their time in graphics also (though they may look a little dated now, but at the time they come out they were a bit ahead of the curve).  People tend to like VII (7) more then most of the others.  Now I am not going to grade them, as currently only 2 are not really dated and thus would get bad scores in a couple of the categories, but I will say that everything considered (when they came out, what was available at the time, ect) that at that time I would have scored only one under an 8/10 and that was 2 (which would have gotten roughly a 5/10, it was my least favorite in the series).

The music is amazing.
The story lines are interesting (if the older ones are a little dated and been done to death now).
Graphics are always top notch (considering)
Fun Factor is high
Replayability is high
Each can take 40-60 hrs to complete (some you have to do every little side quest to get to this mark, some you have to skip every one to fit it into this time frame).
The character development is pretty thorough
Some of them you even care if they bite the dust or not

Some of the villians are more interesting then the good guys tho.

Yeah but you need a game with good character creation and development.

IMO those are the two best and most important things about RPG's, and why games like Oblivion, Baldu'rs Gate, Might and Magic and Guild Wars are fun.

Also I'm not a big fan of turn based RPGs.

Some of the FF are not exactly turn based.  True, most of them are, and even the ones that are not are not exactly real time, but they did impliment a 'real time action bar' in a couple of their games.  One of the best 'rtrpgs' has to be Diablo tho.

How can you people confuse Diablo to a RPG?

It's afterall the best clickfest there is.

Not much on the story, character development or anything on that matter.

Awesome game no less.

Yeah the action bar of FF. The bar has actually been there since V and it is still there even though it's hidden.

If you have a GBA then go for Golden Sun. Turn based but really great. Something that fits in "SNES RPG".

SNES probably has the most RPGs ever done. You should try Secret of Mana.

Fallout and Fallout 2. Definitely.

Also, I hear Planescape: Torment is excellent.

Planescape: Torment is one of the very best games I have ever played. Storywise, maybe the best.
