i translated the first verse of the dutch national anthem.

Wilhelmus of Nassau, i am of german blood
faithful to my nation, i'll stay 'til in death
a prince of orange, am i, free, *********
i have always honored the king of spain.

i don't know why it's chosen to be dutch anthem when it says i've honored the king of spain and that i've got german blood in my veins.

the ********* stands for a word which cannot be found in any dictionary. the dutch word is 'onverveerd', but i doubt that means anything to you

The Hope was written by Naftali Heartimber. It is sung very slowly and it has a sad melody. It refletcs many strong emotions. Some people even cry when they hear it.
I heard it during Russia - Israel game. I didn't understand a word of it, obviously, but it wasn't bad at all.

The Bulgarian national anthem is based on the music and text of the song "Gorda Stara Planina" by Tsvetan Radoslavov (and composed by the famous bulgarian composer Dobri Hristov). Radoslavov, written as he left to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The anthem was adopted in 1964.

Mila Rodino (en:Dear Motherland)

Stately Stara planina,
next to it the Danube sparkles,
the sun shines over Thrace,
flames over Pirin.

Refrain:
Dear Motherland,
you are paradise on earth,
your beauty, your charm,
ah, they are boundless.(twice)

Countless fighters fell
for our beloved nation,
Mother, give us manly strength
to carry on their course.

-----

As we were warlike nation this was the bulgarian anthem during the wars from 19th and 20th century, in eventual future war this will be official anthem again, so its our war anthem:

Shumi Maritsa (en:Maritsa rushes)

Maritsa rushes,
stained with blood,
A widow wails,
fiercely wounded.

Chorus:
March, march,
with our general,
Let's fly into battle
and crush the enemy!

Bulgarians,
the whole world beholds you.
Into a winning battle,
let's gloriously go.

Chorus

The Balkan lion
leads us flying
Into a gigantic battle
with the enemy hordes.

Chorus

Young and strong,
in the rattle of battle
We're destined to gain
laurels to claim.

Chorus

We're the nation,
our pride, liberation,
And dear fatherland
till death shall defend.

Chorus

-----
Maritsa is river in Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian national anthem is very nice, full of admiration to the land.
I'm sure it has a happy melody.

Is this truly taken from dutch national anthem?
It sounds pretty weird to me... Is it supposed to be a funny song?

And Russ, can you please post the Russian anthem?

The old Soviet one had too much political Lenin and communism crap, but the music and some parts of the song were really nice.

Interestingly enough, when Eltsyn changed the national anthem to that lame song that didn't even have the words, I said that it would be a lot better to just take the Soviet one and replace the political crap... which was what Putin did about 12 years later So, they did exactly what I hoped they would and now Russia has a great national anthem with a familiar music that you can actually sing!

Yeah, the only problem is that every time I hear that music I want to sing "Soyuz nerushimiy respublik svobodnih..." (Unbreakable union of free republics...), and I was only 3 years old when USSR was divided.

Russia should use the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. I think the intro is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

My anthem, english translation...

Boze Pravde – O God of Justice
Words written by Jovan Djordjevic in 1872.
Music written by Davorin Jenko.
The anthem was officially selected by Serbia in 1904.

God of Justice; Thou who saved us
when in deepest bondage cast,
Hear Thy Serbian children’s voices,
Be our help as in the past.
With Thy mighty hand sustain us,
Still our rugged pathway trace;
God, our hope; protect and cherish
Serbian crown and Serbian race!

Bind in closest links our kindred
Teach the love that will not fail,
May the loathed fiend of discord
Never in our ranks prevail.
Let the golden fruits of union
Our young tree of freedom grace;
God, our Master! guide and prosper
Serbian crown and Serbian race.

Lord! Avert from us Thy vengeance,
Thunder of Thy dreaded ire;
Bless each Serbian town and hamlet,
Mountain, meadow, heart and spire.
When our host goes forth to battle
Death or victory to embrace—
God of armies! be our leader
Strengthen then the Serbian race.

On our sepulcher of ages
Breaks the resurrection morn,
From the slough of direst slavery
Serbia anew is born.
Through five hundred years of durance
We have knelt before Thy face,
All our kin, O God! deliver,
Thus entreats the Serbian race.

The "five hundred years of durance" part refers to the 500 years of reign of the Osman Empire over Serbia.
The translation is a bit trippy, it was modified so that it rhymes here and there. In the original, it doesn't mention the Serbian RACE, but the Serbian KIN (Srpski rod). The "race" part always sounded wrong to me. I mean, we're not a race, we're a people.
I just dug up this translation somewhere so that you get the picture of what it's about.
Quite a pious song, otherwise nothing special about it. I like it mostly cause it was forbidden during the reign of communism

The "Serbian king" part was changed to "Serbian lands", and, similarly, "God save Serbian king" to "God save, God defend".

Here's the Canadian national Anthem

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Its commonly sung to include both the French and English - as both are our national languages, so its often heard like this :

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!

Ton histoire est une épopée des plus brillants exploits.
God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Finnish National Anthem

Our land, our land, our fatherland,
Sound loud, O name of worth!
No mount that meets the heaven's band.
No hidden vale, no wavewashed strand.
Is loved, as is our native North. Our own forefathers' earth.

Thy blossom, in the bud laid low,
Yet ripened shall upspring.
See! From our love once more shall grow
Thy light, thy joy, thy hope, thy glow!
And clearer yet one day shall ring The song our land shall sing.

...The translation sucks arse.

*NO* land is native for anyone, except maybe someplace in mesopotamia. Maybe we should all be singing the Mesopotamian anthem.

Hmmmm, not even sure if we were native there either. I think man stole it from a snake or something.

The problem with all national anthems on the planet is that the lyrics are so pathetic.

Oh <country name>

Oh <country name>,
Beautiful <lakes/mountains/rivers/gas stations> of <country name>,
I love you, with all my heart, oh my <country name>
Your people will defend you, and all of them would die for you,
Cause otherwise they'd probably be shot as deserters,
Oh <country name>

In you I was born, and a proud <country name>-an I am
And all <country name>-ans stand now united
Under your banner, oh <country name>.

From the <something east> to the mighty <something west>,
<country name> stands tall
people rally to its call
Oh wonderful <country name>

In <God/Allah/Zeus/Sean Connery> we trust
And he protects us
Oh <God/Allah/Zeus/Sean Connery>, bless <country name>,
And bless all of us

Give us strength to kick our enemies' butts
Sodomize their women and eat their children,
Oh wondrous <country name>,
<God/Allah/Zeus/Sean Connery> bless us all!
