Heroes 5 - HoF - TotE - Map Editor hint and troubleshooting

This thread is for discussing tips and information regarding the Heroes 5 / Hammers Of Fate / Tribes Of The East Map Editor. If you have questions or calls for help, you can also use this thread.

Please notice that Map Haven is also the main subject of the Map Haven Guild, and you may find this thread particularly valuable.

Map editor Hero insertion.

Anybody got any info for me?

I notice when using the map editor there is loads of heroes in the properties list which you can check. About half of these heroes are not in the on-line .pdf manual????

Also, when creating the map, I can only insert certain heroes from certain races, and not all. Why?

When you come round to playing the created map, the other heroes do actually appear in the taverns.

By the way, I am running Hammers of fate 2.01v.

How can I actually use/insert any of the heroes into the maps I create?

Thanks for any help,

Jaeger.

For a more detailed analysis of the problem, it would be very helpful if you could provide more information.

Take any faction of which you think you cannot add all Heroes to the map, and then list the ones that you can add from that faction.

Just to note, all my points are in this mail, some of which should be on another sticky thred, but I'm cutting and pasting because I don't believe I'm going to get any answers and there fore not be bothered to write this out again in a different format.

Right then, an example.....

Inferno:

Heroes available to insert into random maps in the map editor:

Oddrema, Jazaz, Veyer, Efion, Nymus, Sovereign, Erasial, Gamor, Deleb, Agrael, Marder, Grok, Biara, Calid, Guarg.

Heroes listed in manual:

Agrael, Alistor, Biara, Deleb, Grawl, Grok, Guarg, Jezebeth, Marbas, Nebiros, Nymus, Sovereign, Veyer.

So, there is no info for:

Oddrema, Jazaz, Efion, Erasial, Gamor, Marder, Calid, guarg.

And the heroes which you can't insert into the game(radom maps in the map editor are:

Alistor, Grawl, Jezebeth, Marbas, Nebiros.

But in game they do appear in the taverns....

It's so much hassle inserting a hero you want compared to heroes 3, and in the hammers of fate expansion editor, there is no option to do a 'select all' in the heroes list, which is a pain in the a*** as you have to select them idividually.  The original heroes five did have the select all funtion like for the spells etc.... Why was this removed????

I answered the main part of your question in the Manual thread: you are mixing heroes' internal names with their public names.

I'll get back to you on the editor-specific part here, once I've tested it.

Thanks.

Another question whill I'm at it.....

I've tried editing heroes a bit, but when I go into the game the remain the default. If I try to add a couple of point to defence for example they will be back to zero when in the game. The only thing I have been able to do with them is add artifacts and monsters.

I'm also not sure if I can actually add/remove default starting skills?

Cheers,
Jaeger.

First of all, is there any sort of tutorial for the map editor? This is approximately the most complicated, user unfriendly editor I've come across. I'm having a hard time even setting up objectives. And when I load my map, I get an error that my starting hero is not placed. Ideas?

Secondly, is there any way to edit the specialization of a hero?

The given week appears to be randomly chosen from all available weeks. You can at least set this list of available weeks by modding the proper file. There is more detailed information about this in the Modders corner.

@loboram:
you can specify a personalized moon calendar (from which the weeks will be taken randomly, as Maurice said), in the MoonCalendar tag in the map property tree. It seems it does not exist in a new map, so you'll have to create it. However, you'll need to edit a few files manually, so the discussion might indeed be better suited in the Modders Workplace.

@koersontap:
you have tutorials in pdf supplied with the game: they are in you install folder, in "Editor Documentation/", with shortcuts in your start menu. If it's not enough, come back here.

About the hero specialization, it depends what you mean by editing. Changing how it works is basically not possible, except for a few numeric parameters (but that's more modding than mapping).
If you mean giving one hero the specialization of an other, then yes, it's possible. But it's actually easier the other way: choose the spec first, and then give the hero the face and name you want.

@Jaeger:
What did you do to edit the heroes?
And I don't understand what you mean by "select all".

sfidanza,
thanks a bunch for the pointers. The tutorial should help a lot.

As for the specialization, I'll hope it's in the guide as well, But what I'm really trying to do is give a barbarian character the specialization of another race, the intimidation ability of Raelag. And I poked around for a while, and only saw a place to modify perks, not specializations. I'll see what I can do though, and come back if I'm still having trouble.

Enter your terrain panel, set the "Draw Tool Size" to x3, click "Lower" and start painting in the underground.  Tunnels will appear.

I doubt it is possible.

I tried to make small changes but my "Save" would never recognize the edited-map...when used. Sometimes, my alterations would cause the "Save" to call my altered-map "corrupt" and I'd have to put the older version of the map back into Maps-folder to continue playing the Save. Further, I'd guess you would have another difficulty, and that is your friends have their own Saves, meaning their Saves would specify different data, i.e. player# etc.

Btw, for further questions and answers about the Editor I'd suggest going to these two spots.
