Inserting HoMM III music into HoMM V

How exactly would you go about doing this? I want to substitute the HoMM III combat themes for the HoMM V ones, but can't figure out how to.

First thing to do would be to convert the H3 mp3 into an ogg file.

Is that simply done by saving it as an ogg, or is it more complicated?

You can rename the mp3 into ogg.

Although the file itself doesn't become an actual ogg file, the game will still use it and play the music, even though it's an mp3 file.

And then it may just be a case of backing up the old music files and giving the HoMM3 ones the same names as the old HoMM5 ones - i.e. replace the files in the music folder...?

Thanks, I will try this out. A reason I still like HIII is because of the excellent music, I want to hear it in the new game.

Edited by Moonlith at 00:17, 23 Dec 2007.

If the game plays a song, it seeks the specific filename of the song. In the case of the Inferno town music, it seeks for the file HeroesV/Music/Town-Themes/Town-Inferno.ogg

If you rename an mp3 file into Town-Inferno.ogg and replace the original with it, the game will play it.

The file doesn't need to be .ogg in format, as long as you give it the exact name it seeks. At least it works for mp3s, haven't tried other file types yet.

Combat music is a bit more difficult, since they are sorted per faction now rather than there being 4 different combat songs. And I'm not sure when it plays the specific song - wether you're of the allignment or the ones you're fighting.

There's a tutorial on the subject on the wiki, written by Vokial:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/modding_wiki/modding_tutorials:music_changes

It should be updated to tell that mp3 files can be played without converting them, though. Either rename them to .ogg, or update the reference in the corresponding .xdb file as explained in Vokial's tutorial.
