Life of a hero

The life of a hero can be a hard one.  Especially when you were forced into the life, and not there by choice.  Such was the fate of Ballustria Kreights.  Everybody just called him Baller.

Baller grew up on a farm far away from, well just about everywhere.  Though his family and neighbors had dark skin, his skin seemed to be carved from the blackest onyx stone.   He also was about 3 times normal size.  Born without the gift of sight, his eyes were pure white with no iris.  His strength, even as a child, was unmatched by anybody around.

One day he was plowing a neighbors field, because their horse had went lame.  He pulled the plow easier then any mule or horse could, not even breaking a sweat despite the heat of the day.   At 17 he stood 6'8" and weighed almost 350 lbs, but had not an ounce of fat on his body that anybody could see.  When he was younger people picked on him, because he was a gentle soul, but with all the help he had been over the harvest that stopped quick.  If not for him the town would have went under, do to a plague ammoung the livery stock.

He had personally plowed all the fields, working sometimes 20 hours a day, never complaining.  His father and mother were now something of town heroes for having such a dedicated child.  Still, people worried that he was not natural.  He felt no pain, needed very little rest or food.

While out on this particular field he heard a carriage coming.  His ears were much more sensitive then most, and he heard it a long way away.  It was not unusual, that is how most got around, but something about the sound of it was different.  The carriage stopped at the farm, and somebody got out.

"Ballustria Krieghts?" asked a gentle female voice.  "I assume so because of the description.  Not exactly easy to miss."

"Yes Ma'm.  People just call me Baller tho." he rested easy on the yoke of the plow.

The woman approached him, coming up barely to his lower chest.  "Ballustria...Baller, I am going to ask you to come with me.  I can't explain why right now, but I want to assure you, no harm will come to you.  Even if you say no.  You are free to decline if you want, but it is really important."

Baller paused for a moment.  His upbringing was that he never disobeyed an elder, but he still had a few farms to help out.  That and his parents would have to make the final decision.  "Ma'm, I'd love to help.  I can't abandon the rest of the folks here who need help, and my ma and pa would have to have the final say.  I'm really sorry, but my first priority is this town."

The woman smiled, she had expected that exact reply.  "Had you answered different, I would have had to reconsider my choice.  As for the fields, they are being taken care of as we speak.  The king has sent 30 teams to plow the remaining fields for the townfolk.  They will be done in an hour.  As for your Mother and Father, they are being brought here.  They should arrive soon enough.  Finish this field, and they should be here."

Sure enough, as soon as he finished the current field his parents had arrived.  They discussed things with him and the lady, who apparently was somebody of importance.  He never heard his pa and ma defer to somebody that way.  Finally it was agreed he would go with her.  He distinctly heard his pa say 'your majesty'.  So the woman was royalty.  Interesting.

It was an uneventful, if pleasant trip.  The woman was evasive, but Baller was raised to respect those in power, so he didn't press.  She was nice enough, though she kept looking at him strangely.  Probably had never seen many dark skinned people before.

Finally they arrived to a breathtaking castle.  It was all shiny, as if made of silver, and had bright banners and coats of arms adorning it.  People in full plate armor, riding horses with colorful blankets on them greeted them.  They helped both he and the woman down.  "M'Lady Lastrius, welcome back.  Is this the fellow you went to seek?"

"Indead Sir McQuain.  He has yet to speak to Malfallous, please inform the other knights of this.  Also, inform the servants and maids to prepair his room.  He is to be treated with respect and made comfortable." even giving orders she was pleasant and smiled.

"Of course M'Lady.  Lord Malfallous is waiting for your return.  As is M'Lord Merlin." He said the last name as if he had something foul in his mouth.

"Now now Sir McQuain.  He is a Krieghts, even if a bit..rude.  He was not raised in the splendor of Sparrowflight, please forgive him if he has offended."

"As you say M'Lady.  I will go immediately to spread the word of your return."

Lastrius and Baller walked through the town toward the main castle, people were enthusiastically greeting Lastrius.  Baller was used to the stairs, but suprisingly more eyes were on her then him.  Though he couldn't blame them.  Despite being half his size she walked with such elegance, grace, and authority that people took noticed.  She had a military bearing, which in all honesty suprised Baller.  See though blind since birth Baller had a sort of extra sense, and in many ways could see better then most.

Not many females were allowed to take military training.  Unfortunately it was a fact of life.  Those that did were usually considered freaks or insane.  Though Baller would never think that way, most saw women as child bearers and nothing more.  He heard other races thought differently, but he had not met any non humans.

Two guards saluted and opened the castle doors he and Lastrius approached.  They bowed low to Lastrius.  "He is inside your Ladyship.  He is eager to speak with you."

"Thank you sergent.  We are not to be disturbed short of all out war.  By anybody.  You have my permission to use whatever force is neccessary, even if it is a diplomat from another city."

The guard smiled.  "Yes Ma'm.  Nobody will disturb you until you are ready.  I'll personally guarantee it."

Lastrius nods and grins.  "Do so and the next time we meet I'll be calling you Lieutenant." She took Ballers arm and escorted him in.

Three people sat at a banquet table.  It is unlike a more mixmatched group ever had assembled.  One was rather tall, with broad sholders, sitting straight with eyes focused on Baller.  Another was short, just as broad (if not broader) shoulders, long beard, and intent on devouring as much food as possible.  Rather sloppily at that.  The last was a rather small man, thin and boney looking.

Standing the larger man smiled wide.  "Ballustria, it is such a pleasure to finally meet you.  Sit, we have much to discuss.  First, some introductions. I am Malfallus Kreights, I guess I was the unfortunate one elected ruler of Sparrowflight.  There is Merlin Kreights, a dwarf from the Atrex mountains.  You've met Lass, and there is another fellow here named Sermator Rawls.  Everybody just calls him Ser."

Baller sit, shifting uncomfortably.  He could not help but think he was a child in the presence of great men and women.  Despite not being able to see them, he could sense the enormous power eminating from all of them.  Especially the one who first talked.

Lastrius sat beside him, trying to lend him comfort, but just making him that much more uncomfortable.  "Relax, we won't bite.  Well maybe Merlin if you try to get between him and his meal." she joked.

Baller sat quietly for a bit, wondering exactly what he was doing here.  Everybody knew about Sparrowflight, and the Kreights.  The strongest, most powerful family in all the lands.  Entire nations trembled if they thought they had done something to gain their disfavor.

Malfallus sat again, looking a bit more at ease.  "I bet you are dying to know why you are here.  I am afraid it is a bit of a story..."

Merlin spat out "Just tell the git, don't dance around it like you did with me." still shoveling food in.  It was not a pretty sight.

Lastrius glared over the table.  "Merlin, if you don't behave, I'll sick my husband on you."

Merlin cackled.  "Ok, ok I'll behave.  Just don't see why we got to sit through another long boring story." he turns to Baller.  "You are kin.  You're a Kreights." turning back to Lastrius.  "Simple see?"

Baller sat stunned for a bit.  That ... is impossible, he thought to himself.  Not only was he black, and it is obvious that neither Lastrius or Malfallus had a hint of black in their blood, but he knew who his parents were.  "There..has to be some mistake.."

Lastrius threw something at Merlin, who just cackled even harder.  "No, I am afraid there isn't.  It's complicated, but we will try to explain.  Merlin is a full dwarf.  Not a bit of human in his blood, but he is a Kreights also.  We have absolutely no doubt about that."

Malfallus continued.  "Aye, I'm afraid Lass has the right of it.  See a long time ago the Kreights were cursed by a foul beast that we destroyed.  The Kreights would never have children themselves, but people with the Kreights blood would be born to others.  Besides me, Sermator, and Lastrius who were born do to divine intervention.  It takes a long time to find them, also.  That is why we didn't know till recently."

Merlin gaffaws. "Tell em about the prophecy part.  That's me favorite part."

Sermator sighs.  "Uncle Merlin, do you have to be so crude? Very well, that is my part. Sparrowflight here is not your ordinary castle.  It sort of has a curse on it.  In order to control the castle, some tasks need to be done, and only certain Kreights can do certain parts of those tasks."

Malfallus nods.  "My task is to seek out and slay the former owner of Sparrowflight, who was a vampire of great power."

Lastrius grimices.  "My task is to go to the planes of Hades, and find an artifact of great power to bring back."

Merlin frowns "I get to go to the source of all magic, lucky me.  Still don't see why Sermator cant.  He is the mage after all."

Sermator chuckles.  "Because my task is to research the recharging spell."

Malfallus finishes. "You Baller may have the least enviable task of all.  You have to go to the gods, and return with at least 2 of their blessings."

(TBC - again.  This is going to be quite a long story.  Thanks for the support, makes writing this worth while).

It was a lot to take in.  They discussed into the early hours and Baller was still confused and exhusted.  Problem is, he couldn't help but believe them.  As crazy as it all sounded.  That left on how to visit the gods.  There was two ways, and neither sounded very good.

One was to die.  Only that made the return trip very difficult.  The other was to try to Accend.  Become a god himself.  Since the Kreight blood supposedly held some of AO's blood in it, that would not be as difficult as it sounded.  Baller was a shy, quiet person however.  Attaining godhood usually meant having worshipers, something he was no looking forward too.  However, since he did not want to die, it was the only choice.

Looked like it was time to become a hero.  While the others were off, he would go on many adventurers, and seek to attain godhood.
((The chronicles of his tales is long and would cover several books worth of material, especially if the tales of the others were considered as well.  The follwing is a short synopsis of what happened.))

During Ballers travel he made many of the current gods his enemies, and all of the 'demons/devils' his enemy.  He grew very powerful, and ammased a huge following.  His awe inspiring power coupled with a very quite and respectful demeanor won over a lot of people.  He was quickly on his way to becoming 'The god of commonors' when the gods stepped in.  They brought him to the heavens to talk with him, least they have him to contend with as another god.

Baller stood before a collection of almost every god in exsistance.  Good, evil, neutral, lawful, or chaotic (or some combination of these) they were all there.  Paladus of course led the meeting, for he was one of the most powerful, and the only one who could be trusted to do so.

"Balustria Kreights.  Do you know why you were summoned?" his voice was like thunder, and Baller could feel the goodness and power he commanded.

"Yes sir.  It is because I have been trying to accend, and nobody here wants me to.  Which is fine, I really don't want to anyhow."

An oily but beautiful voice asks "Then why go through all the trouble?  Why risk angering all of ussss?" The woman who spoke would have been alluring, had Baller been able to see her.  Dark mysterious eyes, raven black hair, and beauty beyond that of any mortal.  All Baller saw was the viciousness and dark power the woman held however.

"I was told that I had to meet with the gods and get two of them to give me their blessing.  It was either this or death, and there was a matter of returning had I died." he spoke honestly.  It is said that deception was beyond his ability.

"Should you recieve this, you would forgo your current task of trying to become a god?" the voice was like that of a gentle wind, low and barely audible.  Whoever spoke had not much power, but Baller could tell that with anger their power grew.  Whoever it was, however, preferred gentleness and kindness.

"Yes Ma'm." Everybody seemed more suprised he knew the speaker was female then anything.  "In a heartbeat.  I don't relish the idea of becoming something others worship.  I seek not power nor glory."

"Very well.  However, your actions will not come without a price.  Two of us will give you our blessing, but you will also get what you never wanted.  Immortality.  Along with another curse that you will have to live with all your days.  On the full moon, if anybody gazes at your eyes, they will parish in a painful way.  This we all agreed apon."

Baller sighed.  He knew they wouldn't just let him off with a slap on the wrist.  He had made almost everyone of them angry.  Only way to get their attention.  This, this was going to be harder then he had immagined however.  Immortality.  He bet it wasn't only agelessness they were talking about either.  And with the 'curse' of all but 2 of the gods on him, wouldn't be anybody or anything that could undo it.

So it came to pass that Ballustria Kreights came down from the heavens with that which he sought.  He returned to Sparrowflight, and the others were there waiting.  Each had changed drastically, in some ways for the better, in some ways for the worse.  None spoke of their ordeals, not then or ever.  They repowered Sparrowflight, and had many more adventures and trials since.

A man of noble blood, a warrior maiden, a grizzled dwarf, a youth wizer then his age, and a simple farmboy.  Nobody would expect to look at them that they would help shape not only their world, but other worlds and other dimensions.  Two eventually became gods, one remained the wife of a god, another travels dimensions, and the last a simple farmer once more.  Their tales are for another time.

((So, thus ends the Life of a hero.  Anybody want me to tale some of the adventures these people had?))
