Please, the script idea was to show how ridiculous that whole concept is not to have it put into place. If you wish for people to only respond with the same tone and mannerisms that you would this is not the forum for you. Robots-R-us.com might be better suited.

I do not mind having script to follow.I mean having little to think about a post and distinguish it for being an opinion or half-truth.
Anyway,I mean that threads, with nothing but flamings, should be locked. We need to be more strict to these I think.

I'm not telling you to act like a robot. I'm suggesting how to become less agressive community with remaining humane. Appearently all the direct requests of so many mods and members haven't helped so far, so I'm trying a different way.

Instead of arguing and getting angry over little things, how about when you are angry just get up and take a break from the computer for about 5 minutes just to cool off. This might prevent people from posting things that might be quite inflammatory. Another good thing to do is to think before you post.

Disclaimer : This post is not in any way directed toward any person specifically, but toward the whole OSM.

Lately, we seem to have lost the way.  Flaming, Trolling, Spamming, and personal attacks have gotten a bit more bold.  What ever happened to Civility?  We can discuss issues without relying on the above.  Is it too much to ask that the above be toned down a little?  I understand people will disagree with each other, and I am not saying "Change or else." I am ASKING that we show a little civility toward each other.  Overall it seems that the posters in the OSM (all of you) are very responsible, intelligent, and knowledgable people.

This also doesn't mean.."Don't have fun." people can lighten up a little also .  Don't worry I am not going to go around smacking people's hands. Now..ICE CREAM ON ME...lets have some fun.

A good reminder?

I am glad I took a look around and found this, before just starting a new thread. I used to Moderate, so I am trying to make a positive contribution here at HC and nothing else.

I want to share ‘what I view as a fact’ about ‘conflict’ and will use  myself as the example.

Now,  I live in small-town USA and seldom travel out to a nearby large city. So for quite a while my conversations have been restricted to a small group of locals. Within this very narrow dialogue;  terms, words and phrases are commonly equally shared or at the minimum those definitions easily understood. Serious disagreement exists but not normally because of miss-understanding the grounds of the debate.

This forum as any forum can be, is Global and not a single neighborhood. Yet, on “my personally dreaded Auto-pilot” I will respond in the latter mode and do the undesirable assumption bit, thinking that my typing is going to be median, middle of the road on tone or stance. Yet this is often a misfire. Why?  <imo> Many reasons and everyone knows them.

First thing of the top is <imo> In my opinion. Why bother with that? It should be of little doubt that anything I write is quite likely to be my opinion. How many here are sharing what others think?  But I use <imho> as I know many here will; because it is an “effort” to show that the poster does NOT think they are the end-all about a debate and it is also an “effort” to set a softer tone then often comes across without it, to no real fault of the typist but to the limitations of the medium. Every poster faces this problem.

I.E.  I’m in my small town paradigm and some angle on a topic is no big deal…you name it. But a person from say a far-east country reads my post and is outraged…furious!  They are or have been living through some sort of Hell and my casual reference to the term or issue is felt to be beyond belief and intolerable. I could even be felt to be one with their enemy. Yet, I was not being heartless or void of compassion, I was merely…ignorant of the plight of  another person in another nation or experience. The only answer for this obstacle; is we all become Gods. I’m not holding my breath.

A man was once asked for this; “That I may seek to understand more, than seek to be understood.”  Forget this forum  for a moment, what kind of world would we have if everyone pursued that high challenge?

Edited by Corribus at 21:21, 20 Jul 2011.

Friends:

I thought, since I’m now your new overlord (muahahaha), that I would take a moment to outline how I expect to moderate this forum.

I have chosen to put this post in the “Responsible Posting” thread because I see my primary duty as ensuring that people post here responsibly.

As I have posted elsewhere, I will be first and foremost a moderator of discussion.  My job, as I understand it, is to make sure that this is a friendly place where HOMM enthusiasts can discuss non-gaming topics that interest them.  For the OSM to be such a place, threads should have clearly defined topics, be relatively free of spam, and not veer off into unrelated or unnecessary tangents.  Excessive use of quoting, particularly when restricted to quoting between isolated pairs of users, should be avoided.  And, most importantly, users should endeavor to state their opinions without belittling the opinions of other users or other groups of people.

In general, I urge the Community to keep in mind that the OSM is not a private forum for 3 or 4 individuals.  Users from all over HC should feel welcome here, and should be encouraged to start and, especially, participate in topics.  A wider breadth of participation makes for a wider breadth of discussion.  Both expansions improve the overall quality of the forum.

In addition to suggestions and reminders, as well as active thread management, I will be trying to encourage thoughtful discussion by rewarding good posts (+QPs) and, unavoidably, discouraging disruptive activity by penalizing bad behavior (-QPs).  I hope there will be much more of the former than the latter.  Nevertheless, I feel it is important to outline what kinds of posts I feel are worthy of QPs, and what kinds of posts I feel will warrant penalties.

What I think makes a good OSM post:

1. QP-worthy posts are well written. This doesn’t mean the English has to be perfect, but it does mean that posts should be thoughtfully organized and argument logically presented.

2. QP-worthy posts are respectful in tone. If it doesn’t look like something you could have written to a friend, it doesn’t deserve a QP.  If you put down or make unwarranted generalizations about people, or groups of people, it doesn’t deserve a QP.  Even if you are responding to a post to disagree with it, the post’s author should still feel good that you read what they had to say and responded to it in a pleasant manner.

3. QP-worthy posts do not excessively quote other posts. Aside from making threads hard to read and excluding outsiders from participation, relying on excessive quoting makes your posts reactionary, choppy, and discourages independent thinking.  I like to see original thinking and fresh ideas.  Quoting, while useful in moderation, almost always leads to repetition and escalation of hostility.

4. QP-worthy posts voice new, independent ideas.  Cutting and pasting something you read elsewhere, even if it provokes discussion, is not a QP-worthy post.

5. QP-worthy posts provoke good discussion. No post exists in a vacuum.  I will be looking not only at the post itself, but at the kinds of posts it inspires.  If your posts tend to attract a lot of negative attention, most likely your posts are not very high quality.

6. QP-worthy posts say positive things about other people and other posts.  This doesn’t have to be the land of Care Bears, but quality posts thrive in a positive atmosphere.  People write good, inspired prose when they’re happy.  Even disagreements can be written in a positive way.  If someone makes a good point, even one that you are about to refute, say so.  If someone made you stop and rethink about an issue, even if you didn’t change your opinion, thank them for it.  Such little things really make for high quality posts.

What I think needs to be penalized:

1. Cursing, particularly when used as part of an insult. In flagrant cases you probably won’t get a warning.

2. Linking to or posting inappropriate material.

3. Repeated insults, ad hominem attacks, and the like. Frankly I find it insulting that moderators have to define what an insult is just so that some posters can cleverly find ways to insult people without officially insulting them.  So I won’t define it.  You’re all adults and you know what an insult is.  I’m not going to throw out penalties every time someone insults someone else, because it’s going to happen and that’s a part of debate, but making a habit of putting people or groups of people down will earn you some warnings and, if it doesn’t stop, a thump on the head.

4. Trolling.  Are you posting off-topic one-liners with the obvious intent to derail discussion? That won’t be tolerated.  Let me be clear – intent is the key word here.  This is supposed to be a fun place and some spamming, throwing of good natured barbs, sarcasm and jokes are tolerable and actually desirable.  But if you’re consistently trying to be a jerk and don’t contribute anything else… well, now you know what will happen.

I don’t kid myself that the OSM is going to change overnight.  But while we’re always going to have heated arguments and problem posters, it is my hope that making a concerted effort to be nice to each other and avoid past negativity will help to bring in new people and make the OSM the premier place on the web for HOMM enthusiasts to discuss non-HOMM subjects.  This will take time, but it will happen if there’s a will for it to happen.

In the end, I see myself as a servant of the community.  As such, I promise to do my best to judge the merits of people or posts as fairly as possible and not let my personal opinions on a given topic affect how I award QPs and mete out penalties.  In exchange, I want a collective promise from all of you to try to be respectful of each others’ ideas and opinions, and do your best to open your eyes and minds at the very least to the fact that knowledge of alternative viewpoints, even those you vehemently disagree with, can never do anything but broaden your intellectual horizons and make you better, more worldly people.  I will be relying on all of you for feedback on what posts inspired you and how I am doing as a moderator, and am fully willing to accept constructive criticism… or praise.  My door, or HCM account at least, is always open.

Happy posting!
