Use your left pedal and go for winXP.
Never heard of a guy who had vista and was a happy user at the same time.

Left pedal: format
Right pedal: restart  ( a.k.a. ctrl+alt+del )

Couldn't have given better advice, nice one Dimis.

Vista is just a poor OS. I still use Windows 2000 though because I find it to be slightly better. But that might be me.

I got it to work on Vista.

Try downloading the compatability patch (I think that's what it's called) from the Microsoft website, I got that and now I can run HoMM III, and Sid Meier's Alpha Centuari, both Win98 games, on Vista.

lol. I actually believe that win2000 was better than XP like you.
Mainly because you had different levels for users and things could simply work by giving permissions to groups of people or to certain individuals. I don't understand why this concept was gone in winXP....
But my suggestion on winXP was because I wouldn't expect anyone using win2000.

Hi, I've got a similar problem. I just recently got heroes 3 complete and it wont install properly. I have XP, I put in the install disc, the autorun menu thing comes up, I click install and nothing happens at all. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just wanted to say I fit the description. I have Vista and I'm happy with it.

H3 runs fine, but this seems to be the problem that used to occur on XP as well, don't know what is causing it tho.

So Heroes works. Does everything else work 'by default'; just do what you are supposed to do and in the end things work?

So far it all works flawlessly... Perhaps I'm just lucky with my application selection

I don't think so, because I left it for a couple hours and nothing happened. I tried it out at my friend's house on his computer and it works, suggesting that possibly my PC isn't good enough (his is brand new, vista, quad core etc.), but I don't see how that is possible because my PC runs heroes 5 and alot of other games perfectly. It surpases all of the required specs, so I really don't understand what's going on.

If memory serves there was a trouble with H3 installer-s, but i cant pinpoint the reason. I had same problem with heroes 4 on XP, then after some time, it disappeared. Unfortunatelly i cant pinpoint the reason for that behaviour, since it was long time ago. It could have something to do with external programs interfering with installer.

In this thread however, as answer to that problem, "view readme" is listed.

other quotes from this forum include:

"kinhell!

Iīm experiencing problems even starting the bloody thing =(

Upon installation the ticker goes to 99% and just starts chugging there ( I discover my virus program "detecting" some sort of virus. After promptly aborting the thing, the game semms installed)

So lets start play,shall we?

no not in my case =(

The game wonīt even start saying that it canīt detect this file and blah.

A friend of my told me to try a crack ( Now youīre thinking why the hell would he do that with a bought version. Finally some luck: at least autorun starts (properly which it didnīt do without the crack) and I can push the "play" icon but after that the game just doesnīt go any further.

Anyways my nails are bloody from the stress and my patience is runni g out..."

from the in the thread:
THREAD

Others mention need to reinstall dx 9.0c

Anyway, my point is that this is not Vista related problem and that it happened before on different systems and was reported many times on the forums. I hope you can find your answer.
--------------------------------------------------------
Anyway.. you can try disabling your anti-vir or any "running in background" programs since 3do installer seems unfriendly to them (and many other programs). As other option try running the installer with minimum of other programs running (preferably in safe mode - F8 at startup should get you to it). Then return to normal mode and play the installed game (assuming it worked).

Well, I finally straightened it all out. The game is working perfectly now. I played around with some setting on my computer, thinking that might be the problem, but no luck. Then, while searching through old threads here, someone mentioned going into the task manager and ending all programs and things running in the background which were unessessary. I did just that, then popped in the install disc and it worked! Now I'm free to enjoy the awesomeness of Heroes 3 once again.

I'm running HMM3 under XP (3DO CD) and Vista (UBISoft DVD). On XP it crashes maybe every 100 hours or so. Under Vista it crashes (Access Violation) every 20 minutes or less.

So first about the patch. I downloaded the Version 1.0 to 1.4 patch, which seems to install without error on Vista, except that I can't see that the program files are changed (I tried running as Administrator). How can I verify that the patch installed, or how can I install the patch if it isn't?

Second, what can I do to make it more reliable on Vista. There are compatibility mode things I haven't tried yet, because I wanted to finish the patch first.

[Comment on Vista: Service Pack 1 is much better than the initial version, which deserves an expert level meteor shower.]
