I don't know if this is considered funny or not.
I turned on quick combat because I thought how could these hurt me? even if I hit wait every turn and didn't attack at all, I should be able to kill them with the retals.

Did you split dragons? Maybe you hit youself with breath attack. The only other way I can see losing a dragon is if the gnolls got a bunch of moral and luck.

This is very strange indeed. You had 10 blackies, so the gnolls will create 1 stack only. 1 stack of 76 gnolls can't kill a black dragon in between 4 rounds, while they themselves will die much earlier....

State your artifacts and spells if you lost any mana during the fight (state how much if yes).

Peeps, this is a quick combat bug. No need to explain what it can't be explained. Bunch of morale? A dead unit can't have it.

The only possibility would be the black orb and casting Armageddon/Chain. But why someone will do quick combat with blackies when holding the black orb?

this particular dragon was very old and sick, he died of natural death. that is just happened during a fight.

thats the only logical answer.
I didn't habe armageddon, nor did I have the orb. something must have gone wonky with my game (its virgin 4.0) I played another game afterwards and I was losing a unusual amount of troops to small battles.
even if every gnoll got good moral and split into 7 groups (which wouldn't happen anyways) I don't think they could do the damage needed to kill a blackie, not with 30 extra defense to their attack?
maybe quick combat split my dragons without my knowledge?

Many things can happen. QuickCombat is strange.
Perhaps the AI splited your Blackies and that breath attack occured.
Or most probably Gus Smedstad forgot to close a string or sumthin and voila!
