Best strategy game: CHESS
Seriously now, is one of the first strategy game and I like a lot playng this game. But I do not have time for that, being a very busy person: I play Heroes and other strategy games all day long and in my brakes I study Medicine.  So what do you think about this game? Do you like it?
Or feel free to post whatever passez trough your mind!

I like chess for different reasons. The most important one is the fact that it is not random AT ALL. Now don't get me wrong, random is good, but almost any game I know of has random stuff in a way or another, so that pretty much makes chess unique in that respect.
I'm also on the opinion that truly strategy games are made without random interfering too much (like in Heroes where random makes the decision ). Strategy should be about understanding and countering the opponent's moves, rather than sticking with what random has offered you (in Heroes, this is e.g: artifacts, types of creeps, etc.).
Of course I am not an expert in chess either, as I don't play tournaments, etc.. I occasionally play it for fun (that is usually when I am either: out of electricity or, bored with it ).

What I like in Chess is how universal it is. Anywhere I go, I'm likely to find someone who knows the rules. And with a pocket-sized magnetic set, I can really play anywhere. I don't recommend playing on the bus, though. Been there, done that.

Then you definetly need stronger magnets.
As a kid I played chess alot, and was even in top 10 Croatia players in under-7 and under 9 categories. Kept the good pace of being in the top until the age of 14
But, as I grew older and moved to high school (and out of town), i left the chess club and pretty much never played again.
Those few games i played later killed my interest in chess, since every single game was 3-hour marathon with 80% probability that it will end in a draw. Younger days where mistakes are more common were much more interesting
People i played with in my youth are now all masters/master candidates, with medals from both European and world tournaments. In the meantime my rating was reset and nowadays i get owned by intermediate player. It proves that in chess, practice means alot. (On the other hand, I could probably beat any of them in Heroes
Its a game where you need (contrary to many begginer's thoughts), both good theory knowledge and good combinatoric thinking, if either one are missing, you will forever stay a hobby player, but not that it is a bad thing at all.

Oh no, the problem was not in the magnets. The road was just so bumpy that it was hard to do anything without pushing about other pieces.

Chess rules! I myself am a very able chess player, losing only to my dad who has played his whole life...
On Windows Vista, I easily beat Level 9 Chess but can't beat Level 10. Who can if it plans out the next few hundred moves...damn cheater.

chess rules indeed . I might not be a great player,but i enjoy every game as long as it sport like,and i really get excite when i see a new statgy or a very nice move,made by either side..anyone wants a game?

Chess is good.
Luck plays an external factor though, having a good teacher/being older / more challenging opponents that are willing to teach you./ a more logical effective and planning mind etc
Obviously a player who played it for the first time is not going to be as good as a veteran, and thats a kind of luck i suppose.

I love chess myself but very time consuming and I rarely if ever find good opponents around here. I like the overall planning, setting traps, looking ahead and adjusting tactics according to your opponent's moves. And yes I know it's easy to get rusty if you leave it for some years
It's until you get into its logic, after you do and you have some games you will begin to get creative thoughts again.I remember I had trouble learning to make checkmate with a kind and rook alone

Actually, the chess that is built into Vista seems to be pretty weak... i would give him rating of about 1900 at highest setting(10).
I have a 3,5-2,5 score with it atm (and im not the best player around after all)
Then again, most today's chess engines depend on your processor, since its the one that makes calculations. The more powerfull the processor, the more strenght will chess engine have.
Not that one on VIsta isn't challenging, I'm just saying pro's should have no problems beating it on any level. But then again, its sort of freeware, if you want serious computer programs get Fritz or Chessmaster.
In any case, playing vs computer is not really fun. If programmed correctly, they are unbeatable, and even on "lower difficulty" settings they still play like best chess player in w a world that just makes a critical error once every few turns - feels unnatural.
We could make some sort of HC tournament if enuf ppl are interested. It could be Rapid chess (10 mins per player) or something like that. Since ppl here love heroes, i guess there are plenty of very good chess players.
On a sidenote... did anyone here ever played 2v2 chess? Imho its one of the most fun game variations I've ever seen.

Chess is interesting, and I do decent at it. Though not good. However, as for best I am not so sure. Othello is a nice one, also almost no (or completely no) randomness. If you want a chess game that approximates human play (or as close that a computer can get) try Chessmaster 3000. However, I would suggest not putting it on it's hardest setting.

Chess is really good. My dad is pretty good at it, and he beats me nearly every time, except where I had a strategy, it worked, and I beat him in less then 7 or 6 moves. It was brilliant and he did not know what happened lol

What I like most about chess is the intellectual satisfaction it gives. Knowing that you're fighting an opponent in a battle of equal chances, waiting for him to make that mistake, planning traps, trying to get out of tight spots. And in the end winning or losing are equally satisfying: winning because I was able to outsmart my opponent, losing because since there was no randomness factor it means I was outsmarted, and so there is a lesson to be learned.
The opportunity it gives you to constantly expand your thinking and attention is what's so great about this game.

I once read an article about some new adaptation of chess that spans over 3 boards or something. It was like you could move normally or you could move to a lower or upper level. Anyway, that didn't work out too well. Which brings me to my point, Chess is one of the most ancient strategy games existing and people still love it. It's actually quite wierd if you think about it. There is no such thing as a video game today that will be popular in 100 years. But Chess, such a basic game with no advanced computing or any other factors necessary is still at it...amazing.
As for the Vista thing, I've heard it sucks, but you've got to admit that it does put up a challenge. Playing level 10 is about as hard as any Chess game can possibly get, I'm quite certain it works on a "one bad move and you're out" basis.

Its all about, ability and experience indeed.
I used to do Chess hours at school, got a 4 at the end of year (6 is best) I guess it count as a B+ in the US for example. I loved to play against my teacher, even that he won most of the time

How so? Both players get them. So it just depends who uses them better. Presonally I hate queens and usually perform Queen-Queen transactions where both queens are discarded. Knights are not unfair but most people don't know how to use them.
