Old Might and Magics

Considering the first 5 might and magics are abandonware now, I have been considering checking them out. However, of course some of them are fairly dated especially number 1, so any recommendations on which of the first 5 I should play? The only other MM game I've played is IX and I didn't like it that much, but liked the idea of it.

I just dont understand what are you talking about? Whats that IX Heroes? Arent you talking about Heroes 4?

And are you asking us which of all 5 versions of heroes we are recomending?

Because considering the fact here is Heroes 3 board, your question is kind of askind a Real Madrid fan who is better - Real or Barca...

No as I said in my first post I'm talking about might and magic and not heroes of might and magic. And this board is actually for heroes 1-3 and might and magic 1-9

Me neither. How do the M&Ms compare to HOMM3?

They are of course pure rpgs. You pick a group of characters and fight creatures in first person. Level ups and gold for items and all that nice stuff happens.

I recommend you start with MM3 - it's interlinked with MM7 and has great gameplay.  If you're gonna try MM4 and 5, start with 4 because your characters can carry over between games and MM5 is very challenging without an experienced party from MM4.

Interesting. Ever since the NES came to the US back in 1985, I've been into primarily RPG's. Perhaps my favorites are the King's Field series.   I liked the first person perspective. It added elements to an RPG that should've been there all along, but technology didn't allow. I see according to Wikipedia, "rom Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven onward, the interface features a scrolling three-dimensional environment similar to that of Doom." Does this mean like King's Field? I'm always up for more King's Fields and would really love to be able to play them on the PC.

As I said in my first post, the first 5 are now abandonware, meaning the copyright of the games has been lifted and it is legal to download the games for free. It is also possible to find homm1 as abandonware as well. There are plenty of sites around if you search abandonware.

Hi Jelze,

I started with mm 6.  But of those first 5 I have only played 4 to completion.  I enjoyed it.  5 was a continuation but by then I was fatigued of the games.

I've played 6 & 7, and part of 8, and have the rest. MM6&7 are probably my favorite RPGs with the posible exception of Betrayal at Krondor. IMO, just about everything about 6&7 are better than the Bioware games for example (stress the word "opinion" here). I like some things better about 6 and some things better about 7. I like the skill system, spells and overall characters better with 7. I like the map and dungeons better with 6. MM6 has some killer dungeons.

I didn't like MM8 as well. But I don't really remember why except I didn't like the new party system.

Not sure what you mean, I've never played Doom, and not sure if I've even seen it. MM6-8 are just first person POV and you can turn in any direction. It's smooth scrolling rather than stepped. I can't remember for sure, but I don't think you can look up or down.

binabik, the new party system meaning the race system?

out of 6-8, i liked 6 the least, cos in 6, if you can basic the skill, you can GM it! o_O

7 was more balanced, except most classes were useless. (monks, druids etc.)

8 was more fun, except my dragon's fly was bugged, so i had to use vampire's levitation to get across the lava =)

I barely remember anything about race. I just prefer to start with my characters and keep them the entire game. I can build them how I want.

For MM4 and 5 is it advisable to play them separately or just play world of xeen? I've heard you just transfer your files over for 4 and 5.

World of Xeen = MM4 and 5.  MM4 and 5 installed on the same computer = World of Xeen.

Starting by playing MM4 through is the best option unless you are after a serious challenge.
