Don't buy one, make one yourself.  You will feel much closer to the computer, learn more about comptuers in general, and have complete control over the computer.

Hmm Daystar, he is young and might not know how to make one.

The knowledge on how to make one might take a long time to learn.

What I recommend is that if you do want to make your own, go on searches on the internet and find out what is good and what is not. Read books on how to connect Computer parts with one another, learn how to build things. This might become useful for you to make your own.

You will also need to have some knowledge on how computers work and some of the definitions with them.

For me, since I know quite a lot about computers, all this seems pretty easy for me, and at the same time, interesting.

When I was about 5 or 6, I already knew what Modem stands for. For those of you who don't know, it stands for Modulator Demodulator. Things like that might become useful.

Other things you may need to know are the pins for things. Like for a certain motherboard, it might only have a specific amount of pins that it could hold with a CPU or RAM. what I mean is that if the RAM you buy goes over the amount that your motherboard can hold, then it will not fit into the RAM socket.

Things like that can be quite useful if you want to buy the parts to make your own computer.

You will really need to learn the basics of how a computer works and some of the definitions associated with it.

If you do not want to make your own, then look on the market and see what is good and what isn't.

I would not suggest making one unelss you have a direct contact to a proffesional to put the parts together or a friend who knows at least a bit about it to make sure you dont screw anything up.
Its not that easy as people make out, and buying a pre-made one is only slightly more expensive and can be paid over-time usually.

Making a computer IS easy once you have the basic knowledge. That is why I suggested Mamga to maybe do some researching or whatever if he does want to make one.

Making one has all sorts of benefits as well.

I had help from my uncle, who works for Microsoft. But do you have one now?  If you do you can probobally look at it to see what's what.  If you buy all the general parts (Mother board, processor, case, graphics card, hard drive, fan, etc) most will have instalation instructions.

Also, yes, my computer is my girlfriend.  I buy her flowers and roses, and speak shakesperean love poetry to it:  "Soft, what light thru yonder window breaks!  It is the east, and thou art the LED!"

Also look at the motherboard. Some tell you where to put stuff, like graphics cards and all that.

Sound cards have that too and Graphics cards as well. Like on most sound cards, it will tell you what some of the things are, like Aux, Line In, Mic In, Stereo In etc etc.

You might need knowledge of AGP, PCI and PCI-E and the different sorts of Hard Drives like IDE/ATA, Serial ATA (SATA) and SATA II.

MIGHT need knowledge??? If someone doesn't understand the differences between all those then they should NOT be building a computer.

The thing is that that stuff changes faster than you can learn it. So even if you already know the current stuff, it might be completely different in six months.

One thing that's very critical about building a modern computer is that cooling is extremely important. With these dual and quad core processors with liquid cooled radiators, the case design and the position of the components can make a big difference in air flow which changes the thermal characterists. Even the graphics cards come with large fans these days. It might be that a good case with good fans is fine, but I'd sure want to look into it first. Heat and static are killers of electronic equipment.

Good stuff Binabik, and a thing about the Computer Cases.

Be sure to know what the height of everything is.
For example:

You might buy a computer which only supports half height PCI and APG slots, but you buy a graphics card or a sound card that is full height and length. Then you are in trouble.

Be sure what height and length everything is before buying a Case, or at least buy the case and make sure it is the correct dimensions for everything. It would suck if you bought an expensive graphics card and it won't fit. This might not seem a problem, but there are computers out there which only support half height APG and PCI cards.

If you have never opened your current computer-case before, and you don't know a good friend/relative of yours who does, then do not build the computer at home. (Which is going to be the easy part The hard part is to decide about the parts that you are going to use. But that is suggested. Ask some friends, read some reviews, find which parts fit with other parts (e.g. what kind of graphics cards can you use with a certain motherboard [which you might have selected because of good reviews for the processor that you are going to use], and in the end decide what you really want). Oh, and speaking about processors; buy the cheapest dual core and you 'll be fine. Do you plan to work in programming in the following 3-5 years? If so, buy a 64bit processor (again the cheapest).
Basically, this is it. In the future, try to upgrade (not build) your computer whenever there is a need, so that gradually you can start feeling more comfortable. Then, at some point if you want to experience the entire build-up, do it.
Is there any reason at this point to jeopardize your money?

Well, three out of my last four computers have been Dells. Dells might not be the best computers. And they might not be the cheapest. But I like them for one real good reason. They aren't full of a bunch of proprietary stuff like most other manufacturers.

You can buy just about any off the shelf parts and won't have any trouble putting it in the computer (as long as it's the correct type like AGP, PCI-E, SATA, etc) With most other comp makers, there's a very good chance that any upgrade parts have to be purchased from them at an inflated price. And with some companies, you can't even open the case with voiding the warranty.
