I know how to save the earth!

Problem:
In 5 billion years, the sun will reach the end of it's natural life cycle and will expand until the outer gas envelope is bigger than earth's orbit. When that happens the drag will cause the earth to spiral into the center of the sun, where it will be vaporized.

So!

I came up with a solution.  But first I want to know if any of you have thought about this problem and have any solutions.

We send a huuuuuge poster into space saying: "HA! Take that, Sun! We won't let you destroy our planet!"

And then we nuke Earth from all possible directions including the inside.

Eh by then the huge alien insectoids will have found us and devoured us.  Being extinct (because of this) we won't have to worry about it.  Though I guess finding a planet that is far enough from the sun not to get consumed, but close enough not to be to cold would be an option.

You guys are missing the point, it's not about saving us, it's about saving Earth from the sun.

Well it has been proven about Mass Extinction is real.
Our own kinds became extinct.
Maybe the Aliens already have the technology to make the earth rotate faster.
We can move Earth near Pluto
Charon is not a big moon but closer we may have some good gravity.
Away from the bigger moons like Glasymon & Titan from the gas planets.
Plus away from the bigger moons from the gas planets.
Hmm maybe we can just move near an Ice Planet

Maybe we can move to the Black hole.
Maybe we can just sit on earth & hope Earths Nexus powers can fend off the Awesome infinite power of the Sun!

I like the last one.

Not to touch the Earth,
Not to see the Sun.
Nothing left to do
But run, run, run.
Let's run.

Well lets see, 5 billion years..by then one of two things will most likely happen.  We will have gone extinct (probably killing ourselves off) or advanced so far that the sun expanding would be easy enough for a 5 year old to solve.  I am interested in what solution FoG has however.

No, but you see, if we'll go extinct there will be nobody to save Earth from the Sun.
And yes, I'm too waiting to see FoG's solution.

He is the decider.  He'd just decide the earth has moved already.  Since it would have already moved (according to him) nothing would be done about it.

To be honest tho, this whole mess was not all his fault.  It is now, because despite everything he is ignoring everybody and doing what he wants, but when it first came up, people COULD have stopped it.

This is so pointless. And look at you silies, talking about alien insectoids. Don't you all know that in 2029 we'll be in the middle of the terminator wars? It's like so obvious...

So basically this is it; you need to move the earth farther out in the solar system, preferably where it gets the same amount of energy that it does now, maybe a bit further than the asteroid belt.  So the question is, how do you do that?  Where would you get the huge amount of energy to do something like that?  There's not enough radioactive material in the solar system that would provide that kind of energy.  You could suck the oceans dry for hydrogen for fusion but that would produce more radioactive waste than you could deal with.

So here's the answer.  The Oort cloud and the Kuiper belt.  There's vast quantities of planetisimals, comets, and other debris floating out there, many of them are on elliptical orbits that bring them close to the sun.  The goal would be to focus them, nudge them a bit, so that their momentum can be utilized.  You need to place them on a trajectory that would have them nearly intersect with earth, like so:

The space junk bounces back, much slower than when it first came in.  The momentum is transferred to earth, accelerating it and nudging it a bit out farther into the solar system.

In order to complete the mission, you'd need to have a vast swarm of AI's examining the oort cloud and looking for possibilities.  Then when you find a good candidate, you explode a nuke nearby, not enough to break it up, but enough to push it into an orbit that moves it closer to earth.  If you want to pick up some momentum, you'd swing it by Jupiter or Saturn first to steal a bit of their's before sending it into the inner solar system.  After the Sun goes supernova and shrinks to a tiny neutron star, you can reverse the process.  Problem solved.

Ok but why not find away to harness the energy of the expanding sun to do the same (it would provide more then enough energy).  Now the return trip would probably have to be as you describe, but the trip out would be easier.
