Help an unexperiansed guy!
hi I want to play n toh but I dont want to lose a lot! I played lots of lan games but i see most of toh players are better than my friends. I play stronghold. Are there any clues for me? Do I have to get a map pack? Who choses the map for playing? What are the most popular maps? what moves I should avoid playing? Please help!

first of all you must give your msn for us to add you and we can talk easier! secondly you should be more specific in your questions. also you should avoid choosing only 1 faction. first of all because a lot of players demand random and secondly you should know how the opponent will play his faction. for further help add me in msn. vangelis21toh@hotmail.com

Played many games here and nether go random faction, hero... Don't think going random faction/hero is the only right way to go, it's only a option ...

Pretty much, nobody forces you that way. Same thing for maps, it's a matter of negotiation but of course it is advised not to play a map that the other has played more than a few times. Maps are selected from here, ask around which are the more popular. Ubi maps and random suck so we tend to prefer the custom ones

N2N (noob to noob) simple and straightforward winning strategy.
Choose barbarians, choose among their heroes Haggash, Urghat, Telsec if available and in that order, develop skills War Machines (tent, ballista, triple shot (in that order preferably)), Logistics (Warpath), Attack (Flaming arrows), Shatter Dark Magic and if lucky Enlightment.
Breed as many centaurs as you can as quickly as you can (this includes purchasing a new hero every week for additional 10 centaurs) and also upgrade them to Centaur Marauders ASAP (like day 2 or 3).
Know basic directions on map and build lvl 7 dwelling on week 2.
Follow this and you will be good from the very beginning.
I have 10 games completed and in 1st my opponent came after me with Haggash and didn't even loose a single unit. It took me 3 days and quite a beer to recover from shock but I mirror his strategy and my record is 7:2 since. That strategy is sooo good for "creeping" that knowing almost nothing about the game I have always turned out to be at higher level with less casualties than my more experienced opponents. Both of my losses happened because opponents ballista moved 1st and thus he was able to take out my ballista. Good game. The rest of my forces were more and stronger but its ballista that decides (unless its a huge map like Genesis and Hourglass or smthng).
I admit I know almost nothing about Magic spells and unit's special abilities and stuff like that (ok, except dark magic = dangerous), but the essence of the game is currently not in its name - HoMM. The actual name of the game should be HoB!

True, custom maps rules here, but random maps are not sucks... Time of random maps will come soon

I was actually so much stronger that his troops were graded "moderate". But his ballista moved first and it decided like 70%. The next 20% was my fault - underestimated the castle strength. I was shocked to read later that shooters only do 25% damage to those behind walls! Final 10% was not taking goblins gremlins (the omnipresent eye of Vangelis sees every my mistake  ) with me, I didn't know about their ability to shut down war machines, ah missed the point of sucubas as well.
Anyway I learned a lot.
But the fact alone that I knowing nothing about the game came out with stronger army and like 4 levels above emperor calibre player tells it all.

That Haggash is imbalanced  And I don't say that to tease you. She's one of the easiest heroes to develop, creeps easily and makes tanks a powerhouse before too long. Even if she did not give the centaurs starting initiative she would be above average.

We played latest Heritage of Deleb and Haggash is banned there. I played Urghat. It was Willgefors who played distant Haggash clone by the way - Dougal (adds to Marksmen stats but not initiative). At final battle all of my stats were like 1.5x - 2x higher... Oh, well. At least I was tought not to underestimate the strength of castle walls. None of my unites even got inside the walls by the way. They were all shot to death by ballista (ok, like 90% actually) while crowding in front of the gates.

i remember playing with necro against haggash on dragons cape and when we met at the middle his troops were graded moderate i attacked ,and suprise couldn't do any damage to his troops and haggash just killed everything ,so i retreated to learn some dark magic(which he had no shatter),won the second battle very hard before he flee ,however we never finished that game 'cause my opponent "could not remember all the tactics if we continue the game in more than 1 day"

Speaking of Haggash what's wrong with this picture? The centaurs had 12 initiative but a 26 lvl Haggash made all the difference.
