Medieval submarine - idea

Maybe there can be an upgrade of the shipyard. And when you upgrade it, you get access to medieval submarines. Well, those should be run on some sort of very primitive steam engine, or even without engine. I remember that in reality, in the 17th century or so, French planned invasion on England with some sort of sibmarines (there’s one of those in Louvre). So something like this is possible to be implemented without fear that the game will be ruined.

How does this machines work. First they cannot be spoted normaly on the map (somethind like expert invisibility can be applyed to them). Only heroes with master and GM scouting can spot them,  creatures of 4th level can spot them, wethere if they’re aboard some ship, or near on the ground. And the final spotting method is with flagged watch towers.

So this way the submarines will be great for sneak attacks. But this way the game will lose some balance, right? Because everybody will run for submariens in water maps. So this can be balanced this way:
- the submarines should be expensive, and should demand precious resources
- the submarines cannot transport creatures of 4th level

In my opinion this feature can lead the water games to more interesting gameplay, and will open strategy possibilities. What do you think?

3DO won`t do it, I`m sure... But it`s not a bad idea... Well nothing special too.

i would say 'no' to submarines, but

if there were any, they should be powered not by steam engines, etc, but by dolphins or sth. steam engine also means cannons, etc.

what do i need lore for? no matter if it's a black dragon or an elf that i encounter.. i am going to shoot it down.. and then walk over it with a mech dragon. there are no firearm-resistant creatures, are there?

Moderator's hat off for this post

It's a wonderfully weird idea, Svetac.

Steam engines do not necessarily imply cannons. If I recall correctly, a Greek 'toy' used the basic principles of steam expansion to whirl a sphere around. ::grins:: However, that smokestack would have to poke above the water, and would certainly reduce the 'stealth' factor. And submarines don't even necessarily have to have engines. The CSS Hunley was powered by men working cranks.

It would probably have to be very slow, and with the new blending would make a nice bit of 'eye candy' as it crept along under the water.

Unfortunately, I really can't see any town but the Academy being able to produce something like this.

Perhaps as a variation on the idea, it could be a relic class artifact. Perhaps a 'Leviathan'? Sort of a Golem Whale, which could be an interesting graphic. (I'm imagining a whale constructed of metal and jewels here, not something like the current Dragon Golem). Making it a relic would limit its availabilty on maps, but still make it valuable for those 'sneak attacks'.

On an unrelated note, if a hero with Grandmaster Stealth boards a ship....is he still functionally invisible?

I would vote for something a little more mystical and less machine.. but that's my opinion. Something like a spell called Oceanwalk or something that allows you to do the same thing except w/o a submarine.

Battleships

Ok... I guess if we have a submarine option we could also have a Warship option, especially since there are now Pirates in the game. A warship is a ship equipped with cannons, and is able to sink enemy ships without having to board them.

Cannons were the first fire-armed weapons, widely inaccurate to begin with but they did exist already in the 14th century.

How would this work?
1. Shipyards will have the option to build Warships. These are armed with cannons. Of course these ships costs more money/resources to build, and may also be a bit slower. Different towns could have different ships available for building.
2. Ships will have hit points, if they take enough hits the ship will sink.
3. Cannons will fire once per round doing damage to the enemy ship, and also some damage to the creatures on-board.
4. Ships can be commandeered to enter normal ship-to-ship battle or to try to flee, or try to keep distance and continue to fire cannons. The action is decided for each round.
5. Ship may have different speeds.
6. Flying units can be ordered to attack units on the other ship. Archers may fire when the ships are close enough.
7. Mages could have special spells for this type of combat.

Call me old-fashioned, conservative, unreceptive to new ideas, but i really hate the idea of a technologically advanced ship like that coming into Homm3.
As I suggested before, a spell called "OceanWalk" could allow the player to move on the bottom of the "sea" floor unseen and for several turns (perhaps a mana penalty per turn?) until they get to where ever they need to go.
And as for the idea of warships, it is a good idea, but the same thing could be done with catapults/ballistas aboard, not gunpowder cannons. This will probably turn into another bash the purist argument like the dragon golem, but gunpowder cannons in my opinion do not fit with Heroes of Might and Magic.
Again, call me close-minded and an old fogey, but my opinion is that this idea CAN and should be kept in line with the other three games: might as limited technology (up to a ballista and blacksmith) and magic.
Sweet and simple... no science or newfangled technica tossed in to screw it up.

I think that this can be merged with my Ancient buildings idea. So that this can be one of the Academy unique ancient plans? Confused? Check the Djive's "Wishes for new map locations" thread.
