Story Stick
It was a cold cloudless night. Somewhere on the hills of Herien a figure slipped through the shadows silently. With each breath a cloud of fog could be seen, as the figure silently approached the unweary traveler. No sound cound be heard from the movements, as closer and closer the figure approached a hapless child collecting flowers.
Rosana knew that she should not be out this late, but she wanted to suprise her mother in the morning. It was her mothers birthday, and Rosana wanted to have a beautiful bouquet waiting. Just as she had picked the last flower, and put it in a basket, she felt hot breath on the back of her neck.
Something powerful and furry ran into her knocking her down. Glints of sharp teeth and powerful claws could be seen. She was pinned quickly, and mighty jaws came down. Then a long wet tongue could be felt on her face. She giggled and wrestled with her furry friend...

"Haha, Fluffy, you surprised me," Rosana said, as she pushed the dog off of her and got up. "His name isn't Fluffy. It's Killer," said her brother John as he walked out of their cabin, "Don't you see how vicious he is? He could've killed you if he wanted to." "Don't be an idiot," Rosana replied, "Help me pick up the flowers. I dropped them when Fluffy jumped on me. They're for mom."
John helped Rosana pick up the flowers. "So, when are you leaving?" Rosana asked. "Today, after lunch," John replied, "The recruiters for King Basil's army will be here, and me and the guys are going to be off. Of course, I'll be going to the Academy of the Sword while the guys will just be regular soldiers, but we'll leave together." "Well, good luck," Rosana said, "Now let's go wish mom a happy birthday."

"Mom" was beloved the entire community. A retired sailor with the mouth of a one-eyed carpenter and similar hygiene, Mom had set up the finest women's clothing shop in all the land. Queens, debutantes, and movie stars from acorss the globe would drive their zepplins for days just to purchase the latest size 0 dress. The clothes Mom produced were so fine, many thought he used witchcraft or voodoo in their creation.
"So exactly how old is Mom today?" John asked as two walked towards the city plaza.
Rosana contemplated for a bit but turned up empty. "I'm not sure. Come to think of it, nobody really knows how old he is."
"That's odd," replied John. "You know something? I don't really know anything about Mom except that he makes dresses. Why exactly are we going to this party anyways?"
"It's tradition. Can you think of one year you haven't gone to his birthday celebration?"
"Not really."

"Then again maybe I can't." muses Rose. She looks around. "That is weird, we should have been at the house by now. I never wondered that far away." she looks at the animal following them. "Which way is home boy! Lets go home!" she sounded excited..which normally would get the animal excited as well.
This time the animal just sniffed around and looked confused. John looked around. "To the nine hells with home, where is the town?!" sure enough not a trace of the town was to be seen. Since they had passed the sign, they should at least see a hint of it, but all around was just thick forest and trees.
"John..I don't like this. I am scared.." Rose looked around for something, anything to tell them where they were.

"I havent seen that sign post before," said John. "Me t-o-o," said Rosana and got even more frightened. " What is going on?"
"Calm down and lets just move on to where the signpost suggests, i am confident that we cant be far away from town. Probably it was put here to help clumsy people like us out."
So they moved on where the signpost suggested, although the upcoming road was going to lead far far away from home..

After walking some time in the direction of that sign post, they have seen the town.
"That's our home town!" said Rosana who was happier now.
They both started to run to it, but they didn't know that this town wasn't actually their home town, although it looked exactly the same.

They went to their house, and opened the door. An old bearded man was sitting at the table eating lunch. "Hey, wha... What are you doing?!" he asked, and got up from the table, "You think you can just barge right into my house? Get out, before I make you!" "Wait, this is our house," John said. "Like hell it is!" the old man bellowed, "Now get out!" "Wait, our mom lives here!" Rosana said. An old woman stepped out of the kitchen, and said, "I'm not your mother, and there are no other women here! Now get out, you urchins!" The old man reached for a knife, and John and Rosana thought it would be safer to leave.
"W-what's going on?" Rosana asked, when they were outside. "I have no idea," John said.

"There's got to be an explanation." hesitated John. "Lets go talk with the town aristocracy and ask what the hell is going on, what happened"

They went into the town hall, and saw Oliver, the old scribe, sitting at his usual table. He looked up at John and Rosana as they came in. "Hello, how may I help thee?" he asked. "Hey, Oliver," John said, "What's going on? Who are these old geezers at my house?" "How knowest thou know my name?" Oliver asked, "And who are ye?" "Come on, Oliver," Rosana said, "It's us, Rosana and John!" "Rosana and John... but that's nonsense," Oliver said, "Rosana and John were killed by Lord Alastair's forces on the way to the village five years ago! At least, perhaps that is what passed. Or maybe they are in some dungeon somewhere, or slaves. But, most likely, they're dead. Knowing John, he tried to fight them, and..."
"We're not dead," John said, "And I don't think this is funny, either. If this is some kind of joke-" "If this is some kind of joke, thou art playing it, not me," Oliver replied dryly. "But we're really Rosana and John!" Rosana said, "And we're not dead!" "Assuredly ye bear some resemblance to them," Oliver said, "But ye are not them. If ye were them, ye would look five years older, to begin. Ye look more like they did when they were killed." "Did anyone ever find their bodies?" John asked. "Dost thou not think we had better things to do at the time?" Oliver replied, "Lord Alastair attacked the village with his army! We had to care for the wounded, bury the dead, put out fires, and so on. We had no time to search for the bodies of two kids then, and, by the time we did, their corpses were probably eaten by wild animals."
"What happened to our mother?" Rosana asked. "Freegirl, thou art not Rosana!" Oliver exclaimed, "For what purpose seekest thou her mother?" "We're just looking for our mom!" John exclaimed, "Is that too hard for your dried brains to understand!" "Th'mayst be John," Oliver scratched his head, "Thou hast his temper. And his looks. Very well then. Your mother left the town a few days after Lord Alastair's attack. She went to London, though where she is now I do not know. Perhaps she resideth with thy father's relatives. It still is a pity about your father... Lord Alastair was certainly happy when he though he killed your father's children - that is, ye."

As soon as the pair left to go find their mother and find out what is going on 'Oliver' turned to a desk and opened it. "Everything is going according to plan. They really think they are 5 years in the future, the illusion is working perfectly."
"Sssssee that it remainssss that way. We can not allow them to return to their homessss yet. We need more time for our plansss to take root."
"Your will be done master." 'Oliver' closed the desk and began to write messages to his various underlings.

John and Rosana were walking the town's streets when suddenly a strange man with a black robe and a hood bumped into them.
"Sorry mister." apologized the two.
"You're in danger!" said the man after which he immediately ran away from their sight.

John snapped out of his daydream. "I've got to focus!" he thought, "Not think about pizza bombs!" He turned to Rosana and said, "Pretty weird stuff, huh?" "Yes, it is," Rosana agreed, "But it seems nonsensical that we are five years in the future. I mean, we just took a walk in the forest - there's no way five years could've passed. John, do you really think we're in danger?"
"Probably not," John said, "But we'd best be careful, just in case." He took out his dagger, a gift from his father. It was semi-transparent and glowing lightly, for it was one of the shards of the sword Heilegram, which was shattered in the Battle of Lorraine, when the Holy Roman Emperor, who was also a dark sorcerer, engaged in battle with King Louis of France, who was wielding the sword once wielded by Charlemagne. The sword was then shattered, and both were slain. John's father, who was present at the battle, took one of the brightest shards, and had it set into a dagger, and gave it to John.
John put his dagger back. "What are we going to do now?" he asked Rosana.

"I think we should try to track down mom. If anybody can make any sense of things it will be her." suggested Rose. She brings out a hankerchief that her mother made for her and let the dog sniff it. "It's a long shot, but maybe he will be able to find her with this."
Indeed the dog gets excited and races off, with the two behind them. However, when he stops, the two are looking at a tree. The dog seems confused, and keeps barking at the tree, but it is just a tree.
"Well that is odd, he's never led us wrong before. But unless mom somehow became a tree.." John pauses. "You don't think..."

"Hey there." - their mother jumped down from the tree.
"Mom!" said the two cheerful.
The dog was still barking though.
"What's with Fluffy?" asked the mother.
"We don't know... He just started barking when we arrived here. At first we thought -" Rosana doesn't have a chance to finish her sentence, as her mother receives an arrow in her head and collapses dead to the ground.
"MOM!" the two are now desperate.
