I gave up on the game since it was too much about rushing to get powerful arties.

Like Elvin said, there are combos that give you ultra advantage, and it's bad because the other player can get utter crap in the same time

the difference between good artifacts and bad artifacts is too big, the expansions even widened the gap.

I'd say no-no for combined artifacts in HoMM6, also no gamebreakers like staff of netherworlds

Warcraft3 is a good example where items are fairly balanced, of course the player who gets mass good items while the other gets none gives advantage to the former but one-two better items will barely affect the game.

That's how it should be, I think.

i think all races are good ones. Everyone can win against everyone with the right skills, abilities and artefacts. If I should order them I'd probably go for either Haven, Necropolis or Academy.

Academy for:
-Strong 3rd level mini-artefacts (possibly 35+ knowlegde)
-Mentor so you can get strong second heroes
-Arcane Omnscience (perhaps combined with one school for abilities/mass-spells/master-of-...)

Haven for:
-Training 20 creatures per week
-Perhaps the light/dark combo, with Fallen Knight/Twilight
-Unstoppable charge?

Necropolis for:
-Ultimate necromancy of course
-Mentoring so you can get strong second heroes with leadership and deplomacy. If you get the crown of leadership you're even more likely to win.
-Get a few necropolis towns and you have a lot of dark energy points and necromancy %
-Howl of terror? (if you want this you must skip Mentoring)

on random maps i feel most comfortable with dungeon though im not bad at academy or stronghold i find those three are my strongest but im not terrible with anything else i guess it also depends on what kind of artifacts i find a good artifact can turn my weakest town into my strongest...
