Yep, was hard on both times, but I got out of it (and I have to say, getting rid of computer addiction without friends was easier than getting out of smoking addiction with bad friends)

Neither really.
That being said I see that people who choose Gil base their choice on two assumptions: 1. Gil has a better chance to change. 2. Dan is the most awful person ever. I'd like to show that both of them aren't necessarily true:
1. Gil has better chance to change. Really? How many of you have been in his shoes? The fact that he sits all day on his arse means that he is a pathetic loser who is completely passive about his life. I have the right to say that, because I have been down that road, just not to that extent. And it's not that I didn't want my life to be better, I just didn't want to put any effort into it. It was something like "My life sucks so much right now... oh well". You know what got me better? People who came to me and decided they want to be friends with me. And with every new friend I became more and more open and sociable and then making new friends became even easier. However, a person with no friends at all will hardly be able to start it all by himself. Of course, if Gil gets help from the outside it will be a lot easier, but when you include help from outside then Dan has the same chances to get it as Gil.
2. People seem to see Dan as a pure devil - he does drugs, he gets into fights, he's an intolerable prick who makes everyone's life worse. I have re-read the first post a couple of times and didn't find any of these. He drinks, smokes, has sex and has a really bad attitude. With the exception of the last part I have friends that have been exactly like this at his stage. Guess what, they all turned out fine. Better then fine even. Off course, none of them was too deep, just like I wasn't too much of a Gil, but they weren't that far as well. The point is, don't make the assumption that you know all about Dan just because you don't live his life.
P.S. And naturally, no reply in this thread will come close to bak's.
