Strawberry is the way I go. I have to win the game before I look at a walkthrough for a few things that I missed, that I actually care about.

I don't really cheat, unless I'm messing around. Even then, I usually don't save my game after doing so.

speaking of cheats, when I played timesplitters online (the only game I played online seriously) I was so good that I played against cheaters on purpose to humiliate them

*grabs some chocolate ice-cream*

some games just need a good mod to bring their true beauty out

and some just need a cheat or debug code to be able to go around bugs  (cheers for crappy programming)

and some games, are just too interesting to be bothered about such petty things as mechanics

that said, if you use any cheats against a human opponent, then you should get kicked somewhere sensitive

I don't know how people can live whit themselfs after using cheats. Like kids today i used to cheat on first GTA game but after i learned how to play the game, i stopped for good. You can still have fun whit tanks and rocket launchers but you gotta find and earn them first.

I'm strongly against cheats but i wouldn't call myself a vanilla. I use walkthroughs on second game time to find every item etc. in the game. Playing at Easy mode is pretty pathetic imo unless you gonna play it harder next time. I use mods sometimes but mainly for graphics changes or balancing.

Long story short, Stawberry for me

Mods are fine as they can add depth to the game. but i don't cheat. i won't discriminate against cheaters (noobabees are another story) but i prefer not to cheat.

I can't stand cheats/codes in ANY way. Matter of fact, they get to me so bad that if I see my kids using a cheat code I will take the game away. LOL.
I somewhat agree with this.

However obviously that excludes testing purposes or whatever (also called "debugging"). Also, sometimes the game plain sucks and you could make it better with cheats -- however that depends on the individual if you are serious or over-cheat. To be frank, I don't even find it funny or enjoyable to cheat excessively (you could cheat, for example, in your own way, as long as it will still be a challenge). Isn't the whole purpose to enjoy it?

For human vs human -- I hate to actually cheat unless the opponent agrees (or he cheats as well) even though I'm talking about cheating as in "mods" like modifying the gameplay a bit, not like "god mode" or other crap.

And last, are macros considered cheats? I don't see why people make a big fuss when you have certain macros for your input -- a game should be about tactic and how fast you react and think, not how fast you type on the keyboard!

I usually try to beat it normally first. I have used walkthroughs my first time through a game if it's given me a lot of trouble (*cough*Might and Magic IX*cough*), but even then it's usually only to get over a sticky part.

I used a cheat code once in Quake 2 because there was this lava pit that was so hard to jump over. It was so frustrating, loading the game over and over again, that I used the noclip code to fly over it and then turned it off.

That's all.

EDIT: Except really harmless stuff like some of the cheats in the GTA series (invisible cars, weather settings, model swap) that don't really alter the actual gameplay.

Blah, it really depends on the game.
Cheats is someting to avoid. Mods can be embraced. But a decent Vanilla game is someting beyond that

Take for example a cheat that makes you do half damage -- if we both find that the game makes us kill each other too easily, then it is ok IMO to use it

Normally I like to do cheats after my game, to make sure I saw everything..but one time I got stuck.  Not a little stuck, I mean I litterally did everything I could think of..and talked to everybody at least 5 times (was an rpg).  Finally I had to find out what in the heck to do so..as much as I hate to admit it... I used a walkthrough.

It was designed so you had to talk to certain people in order, and then find the switch behind a book case.  Would have been impossible to figure out the order by pure dumb luck.  Whats more even in perfect order the 'chat' made no more sense then when not in order.  So don't ask me how somebody other then the programmer would ever figure it out.

I used a walkthrough for one of the missions in HoMMV and empire earth...

EE => I was a little kid, so meh.

Homm V => It's either the one with Findan where enemies constantly respawn near your citadel or the one with Raelag where the eemy starts with ten cities.

Ham sandwitch - I NEVER use cheats and hacks and only use mods after a first walkthrough and I don't use mods that would make the game easier (actually I don't know if there ARE such modes so I don't see why using modes makes a game non-vanila...) but I'm willing to use walkthrough if I'm STUCK somewhere (though that hasn't ocured to me for some time now...) unless I've been chalanged to beat the game MAX-VANILA

Maybe - some games (Dark Messiah for example) could use one. But then again - I don't know if there ARE such modes.

Just played Castlevania Portrait of Ruin at Hard diffulty whit lv1 cap I like to challange myself and using walkthroughs in these types of things is hardly questionable. I want complete the games i like 100%, have all the items, max stats, quest/side missions etc.

Final Fantasy games are good example, i have read walks even on first game time when i knew the next boss would be the very last in the game. Then there are those hidden things what you could never quess; Stay in a room for 5 minutes for big bad dude to appear, Go back and forth in and out of the room for moster to come, Have exactly (7777) or any other ridicluos number of healt/gold/stats in your desposal to do something miracluos, Change day/time/year/name at your system and you will be supriced, IF you don't do something in correct order or be too slow or fast you will never the ultimate weapon. Don't you just love those hidden secrect things?

Some games just needs FAQs i suppose
