I haven't met (in RL) a heroes playing girl for like 6 years, back then I knew a few girls who played heroes 2(quite well in fact) and they often picked the nature castle (don't remember what it was called in h2) but also liked the wizard and knight.

Favourite? Hmmm... If this had been Heroes III, I'd say Rampart. If it would have been II, I'd say Sorceress.  But this is about IV, so I say Academy.

Well, I really like unicorns. There is nothing wrong with valuing aesthetics. Nobody wants an ugly army!
The three I play with most often are castle, with tyris and valeshka; rampart with (Gelu nonwithstanding!) Ivor, Melpha, Malcolm or Neela (yeah I know she's tower but I don't care, she rocks) and stronghold with Crag and Shiva. Rampart will always be the most beautiful, but beacuse it is resource-intensive, it isn't always practical. Mind you, since the recent patch made the angels require gems, I became slightly less enamoured with castle as a good town to use of a resource-bare map.
On randoms, necro is usually a good bet as (may be a bug in my copy) there seems to be a lot of mercuary around in random places.

Fortress's defensive focus probably fits my playing strategy best (sit on butt and try to stay alive as long as possible), but I'm just not fond of their troops or heroes. It's not the looks, either, because Dungeon troops are just as ugly and I don't mind them.
Basically, I like towns with a shooter line-up and/or one strong shooter. Hence my preference for Tower and Necropolis. (Also, Tower is exotic, and magic-focused, and has genies and nagas...) Rampart's okay, especially with double-shooting Grand Elves, but the Tolkien-esque thing does not appeal to me and I never know what to do with those darn Pegasi.
With a few exceptions, I also prefer female heroes (occasionally in spite of stupid specialties, like Charna and Daremyth). Is picking heroes to match one's own gender a girl thing, a general thing, or a personal quirk of mine?
