The Phoenix opera music thread

Hello Heroes Community.  Opera is a big part of my life ever since I discovered it in my college years.  What followed was an orgy of learning and listening which has consumed the last 10 years. (Yikes that long already?).

I wanted to share an opera with you so I've decided to take the most popular opera and break it down into highlights demonstrated with youtube clips that have English subtitles.  It's important to understand the story after all.

I realize that opera is no longer a popular type of music, though once it was the most popular.  If even one person benefits from this post I shall consider it to have been worthwhile.

What follows is 1 hour of Puccini's La Boheme with a few explanatory comments from me.  Mostly though the singing, music, and English subtitles do the talking.  It is pretty much your traditional soap opera love story hence the popularity.  I had to switch around between different singers but it doesn't matter too much, the roles are the same.

It is best enjoyed all at once.  I think it comes off well even though I cut out all the comedy.

Act I - The lovers meet in Rodolfo's apartment and decide to go to a bar.
What you are missing - the introduction that suggests the poverty of his apartment and some of the horsing around the poet Rodolfo does with his friends.
Act I start
Her reply
Act I finale

Act II - At the bar we are introduced to the other couple in the opera, Rodolfo's friend Marcello and his sometimes lover Musetta.
What you are missing - Rodolfo buys Mimi a hat as a gift.  This song was remade as a pop song.
Quando m en vo

Act III - The scene moves to a later time.  Things haven't gone well for the two couples. You aren't missing anything here.  I included the first section even though the quality isn't high because it is an important piece.  For that one you may need to make the screen larger to read the titles.
Act III start
Rodolfos jealousy
Act III arguing finale

Act IV - The touching reunion in Rodolfo's apartment after the break ups. His friends are selling their possessions for medicine for Mimi.
What you missed - Some more horsing around Rodolfo does with his friends.
Act IV intro
Coat farewell and beginning of finale
Final segment

I hope someone was brave enough to make the journey with me.  Kudos if you made it this far.  When done right opera is a moving and emotional experience.  Responses are welcome but unexpected.

This is just one way to enjoy opera, and one type of opera.  A discussion could really in many directions, singing styles, specific composers etc.

Thank you HC,
PR

You can't go far in opera without encountering the composer Wagner.

Right now I'm listening to this song:

I'm looking for recommendations for Opera music, specifically underrated or not-so-famous music.  I'm already pretty familiar with the top 15% of the opera repertory, I guess what I'm searching for are songs in the 15-25% range.

So famous but not too famous? That is a little vague but I'll throw out some stuff I like.

How about big Pav:

as Chenier

Or this one is a great tune:

More famous? Less?  Thanks for your interest anyway.

Yeah, that's just the right level

It's just a coincidence but right now I'm compiling the opera portion of my music collection.

You can sign up to Last.fm and when you listen to music, it gets added to your 'listened' songs. Last.fm then takes all of those songs and makes a recommended list of artists based on what you listen to. I mean, for me, it shows a lot of New Wave/Synth Pop bands because I listen to them a lot.

Is it free to sign up there William? Because I probably should, sometimes last.fm comes up when I'm looking for opera information.
