Heroes 2 Music Problem

Version: Homm2 Gold
OS: XP SP3

Anytime I do something that changes the music (such as entering a town or battle or ending my turn or visiting most structures) the game freezes for about 3-5 seconds. I've found this only happens while the music is set to CD music, but I find this very strange because looking at the light on the disc drive there is no indication of activity during the freeze.

Changing to MIDI removes the delay mostly, but it seems as though there is almost no MIDI music in this game because I'm playing mostly in silence now (other than SFX of course).

Thus I would like to get the CD Music working properly without the delays. I've already tried setting compatability mode to Win95 & Win98 and neither helped.

Any other advice?

Are you using Dosbox? If so, installing Windows 98 or ME in a partition, and playing from there might solve the issue. And it is strange that you hear no midi music. It played at every single screen for me. Aside from that, you may want to play with the settings of your emulator, but I am no expert in that area.

By the way, can I ask you how you acquired the game? I am desperately looking for the CD Music tracks, but cannot find them. If you could suggest any way to get them, or could upload them, I would be eternally grateful. I am looking for them for years and could only collect 10 of the tracks.

I believe you can still buy the compendium online, it comes with Heroes 1 through 3 and all expansions. You should be able to find it for $20 and it has the CD music.

I'm not using DOSBox because it's Windows executable, and not a DOS executable. And I have an original CD from when I bought it about 10 years ago.

Any more answers about troubleshooting the music?

Update: I've found that if I change the music to CD audio *while in windowed mode* the pausing behavior goes away. Further changes to the music mode or toggling back to full screen cause the music to pause again and can only be resolved by closing the game, restarting, switching to window mode (if not already in windowed mode), and changing to CD audio.

Very strange. But I guess I can handle windowed mode. And luckily H2 doesn't have the 16 bit color requirement of H3.

I realize this thread is a wee bit old, but I just thought I'd share a music problem I had when recently installing Heroes 2 Gold on a computer running Vista.

First off, I didn't need Dosbox or any similar dos-emulator - just the right version of DirectX. Took me a couple of minutes to install and I was all set to go.

The music didn't work however, and I searched the intrawebs for a solution. At last, I found it, and it was pretty weird and far fetched, which is why I'm posting it here as well, to perhaps aid anyone encountering the same problem. I was running the game on a simulated disc drive, and the disc running Heroes 2 Gold had the letter F. I also had a real CD drive, called E. I had to re-name the drive running Heroes 2 into the highest letter after the Hard Drives (C and D). After I had re-named the drive to E, I've never had any troubles with the music (Opera sound, of course). Just thought I'd share .
