LAN game not working

I am aware this is not exactly the correct forum since I am asking about the old HoMM3:Shadow of Death but I don't know where else to go. If anyone of you have any help for me, that would be much appreciated. Here it goes:

I try to start a LAN game with TCP/IP. When I hit the TCP/IP button, the game freezes for a few minutes before the the next window appear. Same goes for when I click the Host button, it freezes for a few minutes. This shouldn't take this long, have anyone of you had the same problem? What solved it?

Any help is appreciated!

Resetting the router helped it. I don't understand why the router affects whether you can CREATE a game but apparently it does.
We now have another problem however:
My machine is unable to join games found on the LAN. It says "Sorry there was an error connecting to that session. Please try again".
My machine is running Vista and the others are running XP. On another LAN where both machines are running Vista, it works fine. The other machines on this LAN (both XP) can join each others' games. Does anyone have a solution to this?

You may not have TCP/IP protocol version 4 installed on your lan card on the PC running Vista, look for it in the network properties. The only pc on Vista I've configured for lan didn't have TCP/IP v4 by default. (xp has only version 4 TCP/IP Vista has both but some may not be enabled) By enabling it I fixed the networking problem.

In other case try the firewall options on the PC that creates the game you may need to add an exception. And note that if you have WoG you must download one .dll file for network play.

Hope any of this helps.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply and help! Unfortunately I've got IPv4 on all computers. There is also no firewall on the LAN and like I said, other computers can connect and play.

I've also tried running XP with Virtual PC 2007 but with the same problem.

I always play LAN with my girlfriend. We connect a Vista Professional with an XP SP2. Only problem i had was that Vista security was too annoying, since I have the firewall activated, i always have to get out of the game when I create or join so as to confirm the connection or something. Apart from that, no problems nor bugs. You didnt mention in ur post if ur 2 Pc´s were exchanging information...i mean do they see each other?
