Heroes spin off- Guilds of might and magic

smaller, less people, more customisation for the units. this will be a micromanagers dream. If you think of Heroes as Warhammer, this will be more Mordheim, or Necromunda for 40k players. resources are scarcer, units are far more customisable, more heroes, fewer spells, fewer units, 9 factions trying to control the city.

basically, it's the same structure as heroes 5, you gather resource packs (containing random resources) and gold, build up your guild house (hide-out, living quarters, etc), recruit units and fight off enemy factions. however, there are some important differences.

1. units are far more customisable. you will not get many units to recruit, even on a weekly bases, but the units you do get can be upgraded with better armour, given new equipment, and so on. units stack, but only up to a small number, so instead of having a horde, you more have a squad.
2. civilians. this being based in a city, you will need to interact with civilians. you can press gang them into your side, allowing for you to get more units. you can also provide protection for businesses, allowing for them to supply you with gold if you garrison some units in their business.
3. more levels. there are 3 levels to explore, sewers, streets, and roof tops. some treasures and enemies will patrol the roof tops as well, and it is much easier to enter up and down.
4. less epic, more satirical.

lore time

extract from "childrens essential stories: part 1 Martia's creation."-
long ago, a young goddess called Martia created a place where she could play in peace, away from the other, grown up gods, whose only cares were for war and for power. Martia wanted nothing more than to simply play in an enormous sand pit. the other gods, seeing that there would be no harm in this, gave her a small patch of the cosmos to call her own, whilst they politiked and wrangled each other into submission.

Martia first started to create an enormous forest and creatures to play with, from stags, horses and bears, to mice, shrews and even little insects. the forest bristled with life, but there was no light, and many of the animals were scared. Martia then created the sun to circle the forest, and controlled by the four great winged ones.

the dragons ignited the sun every sunrise with their fiery breath, sending it high into the air to be carried across by the angels on their aerial hands, for it to be extinguished by the sirens of the sea, and carried back through the caves by the vampires, to repeat the process again and again.

soon, Martia began to be bored of mere animals, and craved the excitment of more sentient beings. she began to change the woodland creatures, to make them sentient, and able to adapt. from the squirrels she created the elves, frome the moles she created the dwarves, from the mice she created the halflings, from the shrews she created the gnomes, from the rats she created the goblins, from the badgers she created the ogres, from the ferrets she created the orcs and from the otters she created the humans. she celebrated their little hopes and dreams, their camps and civilisations, and decided to rest, merging herself with the nature of the forest itself.

whilst she was gone, she had left no-one in charge of her great scheme. this lead to much bickering between the winged ones over who should take over. The dragons claimed strength, The sirens claimed beauty, and the vampires claimed intelligence. The angels claimed neutrality in the arguement, and decided that the most valuable object, the sun, should be kept by the angels until the other three sort out their differences. in frustration, all the others agreed.

using the sun as the bargaining chip, the angels started to rule. the years of the eternal day meant that no-one could ever sleep, and all races must fall under the thrall of the angels rule. the angels demanded a mighty city, a bastion to their might and power. the people were forced to obey, only the vampires refused, they were creatures of the night, and could survive in the dream world, safe.

ok, now for the factions.

good (near enough)
the Guardsmen- essentially, the haven faction. the Guardsmen are police, watchmen and soldiers who want to keep law and order around the place, made up of mainly human and dwarf troops (pikemen, archers, wardens), probably the most normal faction here.  

lvl1: watchmen
lvl2: archers
lvl3: wardens (Dwarves with enormous riot shields)
lvl4: rune smiths
lvl5: Cavalry
lvl6: griffon rider

the Dustmen- poor immigrant wizards (academy). the dustmen are beggar wizards who want to clean up the slums and establish a new utopia (a psuedo communism society) made up of gremlins, scrap golems, wizards and bottled Gins.

lvl1: Gremlins
lvl2: slum gargoyle
lvl3: scrap golem
lvl4: dustman mage
lvl5: bottled gins
lvl6: Dust lions

the Prostesters- Elven uni students who preach nature protection. yes, they do have hippies, stoners and goths with them, yes, they do have archers with twin shot, yes, they will have walking trees, possibly some werewolves.

lvl1: fearies
lvl2: peace fighters
lvl3: Tree watchers
lvl4: Werewolves
lvl5: Druids
lvl6: Treants

the bad (ish)
the Fanatics- a secret society of necromancers who have waited until the time was right to start an insurrection in the city(ies, I'm not sure how many) for a cause they have long forgotten. they are mainly made up of vampires and humans.

lvl1: zombie
lvl2: ghouls
lvl3: ghosts
lvl4: liches
lvl5: Vampires
lvl6: bone giant

the shadows- the theives, the spys and the assassins, masters of espionage. not so much evil as simply following a higher agenda to most others conception, and are very amoral about how it's carried out. suprisingly, their guild master is the last of the angels.

lvl1: theif
lvl2: sabouter
lvl3: giant spider
lvl4: Femme fatal
lvl5: Master assassin
lvl6: shadow caster

the revelers- hedonistic nobles with nothing to do other than to drink alot, summon a succubus, and then have an orgy with her. all manner of debaurcy goes on in the guild, some plain, some disgusting and some down right bizarre.

lvl1: Imp
lvl2: cultist
lvl3: half demon
lvl4: succubus
lvl5: demonologist
lvl6: Fiend

the neutral
the engineers- somewhat mad, but well meaning, scientists who strive for perfection in their inventions. mixing magic and technology doesn't always work, but the engineers often succeed 3/4 times with their insane creations.

the merchants- well, in any city, there needs to be business, and who better to run it than slicked up business men with orc racketteers, harpy lawyers and goblin scavengers. It's a business, and if you need to employ barbarians, then that's just part of the package (mafia style).

the priests- yes, the priests are a neutral party, mainly because they are worshiping dragons. as a result, priests are able to get creatures like hatchlings, the naga (dragon people...in this universe) and dragon juvneiles.

More factions are wanted and will be appreciated.

In a city there are also no mines. In fact, the difference with a city (which is a very modern thing, if we forget the ancient romans, greeks and carthaginians) and fief are that a city provides all services and resources for many, so would the only resource be money? How would they acquire it?

The sides are only to the extent of what people would consider, good, evil and neutral, really. alliances can be between any of them to counter any other of them.

it's a series of large fantasy cities (probably, or one enormous city). Money is aquired through the afforementioned protection and also through finding gold. individual packages of resources will also be available.

as I have said, this will be a frugal version of Homm, and so buildings will cost less, units will cost less, with resources alot scarcer.

Here's an idea!

Pirates: A gang of ex-pirates who all lost their ships to the guardsmen. Thus they hate guardsmen and prowl the docks, they make deals with unnatural creatures, like wererats, shark demons, and the revenants (will be explained latter; will be a faction tho)they just want wealth, their ships back, and revenge on the watchmen, oh and rum! Lots and lots of rum!

Level 1: Crewmen

Level 2: Wererat

Level 3: Cutthroat (has a cutless, and a hand crossbow)

Level 4: Shark Demon

Level 5: Sea Warlock (human)

Level 6: Giant Crab thing!!!


Revenants: The Revenants are not actually ghosts, but albino humans. They were thought to be "A Plague" by most civilians for haveing unnatural habits, and were thrown out. they are secretly living in the sewers, plotting with the pirates to get revenge. Meanwhile, they try to live up to the name that the commen folk gave them-by trapping civilians and using them as slaves.

Level 1: Human slave

Level 2: Sewer rat(Very VERY large rat; size of beagle)

Level 3: Slave master

Level 4: Revenant Envoker

Level 5: Sewer troll(6ft, throws rocks and garbage)

Level 6: Sewer rat king(Huge rabid rat, size of ox, pwns noobs)

cool factions, I might include them...

well, it is a big city.

oh and as for the chucking the Shadows.... NO! they are all about the secrecy, higher agendas, and having really powerful units! they are the dark assassins who creep in the shadows and shiv you whilst you're busy picking your nose.

Ooh! Ooh! more new ideas!!!

Guidhouses:

Guardsmen- Guard house

Dustmen- Big run-down tenent house

Protestors (hippie elves)- Hidden cavern underneath big hollow tree in the park

Fanatics: abandoned chapel in old graveyard district

Shadows: Secret entrance in an abandoned warehouse

Revelers: Huge creepy mansion

Pirates: A big tavern in the harbor

Revenants: Sewer hideout (kinda obvious there)

Engineers: Labrotory under a university

Merchants: A large semi-permenant tent

Priests: A temple (Also rather obvious)

Edit: Also you should see your army stacks with you as you walk around the city. It should have a fog of war in places where you don't have buildings or heroes, battles can be in places anywhere in the city, sewers, alleyways, taverns, and there may be random civilians with their own turns that will try to flee off the screen but can get in the way, and you could choose to kill them or move around them.

I also have an idea for the level 6 dustmen creature:

Dust Lion

Appearence- a large lion-like shape made of dust with glowing eyes and teeth

History- early experiments in rakasha taming involved binding their spirits to the desert sands, these "sand lions" were later discarded when better techniques in spirit binding were discovered, the dustmen have discovered that these lions work equally well with the dust from the slum streets and are easily created without fancy implements

I'm srry I have to post every thing that comes to my mind but otherwise I think i might Xplode:

Engineers:
Level 1- Homunculus (little clay ape-like thing)
Level 2- Gnome
Level 3- Alchemist
Level 4- Iron hound (Mechanical great dane size dog)
Level 5- Cannon cart (a big cannon in a wagon with a gnome to operate it)
Level 6- Dragon Golem (yes i stole this from heroes 4 but I think it will find a better home with the engineers than with the wizards)

Merchants: (got some of these names from gang terms)
Level 1- Goblin Scavenger
Level 2- Harpy Hood (someone who picks-pockets and runs fences, thought it sounded better than lawyers)
Level 3- Racketer
Level 4- Metal Man(Orc with a very, VERY large crossbow, A guy who carries the gun)
Level 5- Point(they guy who points, and the metal man shoots)
Level 6- Ogre

I think that's a good line up for them. all fit the them nicely (assuming the gnomes are these
and not these )

a Little concerned about the Homunculus, if it was higher and... for the sake of lore, it was the casuality of an experiment gone hideously and hilariously wrong, then that might work.

This list, I have a few problems. Point could be a skill for the hero rather than a unit, so that could be replaced with something else, like trolls.

Maybe a form of shaman then, that was what the point was supposed to be, the merchant's spellcaster I don't know any other terms for him except: Capo (mafia term for chief or boss) Consigliere (an advisor to the chief) or Caporegime (Secound in command to the chief)

By the way what kind of gnome is that robot from, when i think of a gnome I think of him with goggles, a belt full of tools, a leather work apron and gloves, and not mooning me

maybe contracted mage or something like that. a mage who is paid to so all sort of racketeering for the merchants

I'm sorry luckydwarf but if there is any WoW gnomes in this game, with their mechanical ostriches, then there is no way I'll go with this idea.

Oh and bixie I'm sorry but i'm rather cluless on some fantasy games.

there aint no such thing as WOW gnomes, because "Wow" gnomes are the same as other gnomes, except that they dont have those silly hats that just beg you to give them a kick.

And just say NO to mechanical ostriches, they make me want to take a hammer and beat them until they burst into flame.

i just like the complexion of the suposed "WOW" gnomes, and thats why id like to see them in the might and magic universe.

Ok, ok i'm sorry you don't have to get all defensive. It's just when I see "Gnomes from World of Warcraft" I just think about those stupid mechanical ostriches. I just would like a gnome that looked like he knew a lot about machinary (that was the theme that the engineers were going for) That gnome with his armour and flaming sword doesn't fit that mould very well.
