the "Lament your past" thread

ever felt a country was better in the olden days? your home country was much better before the current situation came to be. you can go back as far as you want on this one.

Britain, for example, has fallen massively in the world, Why oh why did we have to give up our empire? we had the most powerful navy in the world in those days, we were unrivaled in industry, the pinnacle of culture back in 1883, we had wealth, power, influence and greatness, why did we have to chuck it all away!

I blame Balfour, Asquith, Lloyd George, WWI, Bonar Law, Stanley Baldwin, Ramsay Macdonald, WWII, Atlee, Labour, the Tories, and the Liberal Reforms-and-later Liberals.

So yeah.

We had this jolly cool country where we played basketball, listened to rock'n'roll, went to beaches, drove yugos and generally chilled.
I recon there was also some communism thingy but not that Stalin sort. Ghastly, yeah, but not that ghastly. There was this Tito guy and he sort of kept everything under control and people were like "yay, brotherhood and unity".

But then he died and went wherever communist dictators go when they die and all those kids growing up in the age of brotherhood and unity brought their AK-47s out of the closet and started doing unspeakable things to kids with different accents.

Then they did it some more.

Then some people flew across some ocean and bombed the place.

Then they did it some more.

I could get all whiny about it but meh. We made a country with three different religions and 194 different freaking nationalities. It's a bloody wonder it lasted for so long.

And at least we still have yugos.

"Inter omnia Gallia, Belgiae... Errmm... are the bravest" That's what Caesar said. You know why he said that among all the Gauls the belgian tribes are the bravest? He names two or three reasons:
- We do not drink the wine from Italy (we are uncivilised)
- we live next to the Germans (we fight a lot)
- Just to underline the fact, we fight pretty much everyone!
Of course, that was before the time trench wars were invented.
