Michael Vick signs with the Eagles

Michael Vick, once the highest paid NFL star but convicted in 2007 of conspiracy, running a dog fighting ring, and killing and torturing animals, was just signed by the Philadelphia Eagles to a one-year deal.  Presumably he'll be making quite a bit of money.

Read about it here.

So I'm wondering what other people think about this.  Does Vick deserve a second chance?  Or does the decision by the Philadelphia Eagles send a bad message to aspiring athletes?  Does it tarnish the reputation of the NFL?

Personally, I think it's pretty crappy.  The guy tortures and kills animals, goes two jail for less than two years, and then gets to come out and make a 6 or 7 figure salary?  I think Philadelphia and the NFL should be ashamed.  The NFL likes to pride itself on holding its atheletes to a "higher standard" than other profession sports leagues like the NBA.  But seriously, what the guy did was just sick.  I think if my favorite team (the Redskins) hired him - and frankly I'm surprised they didn't, because Dan Snyder has that sort of reputation - I'd seriously think twice about tuning in this fall when they're on.

He's a celebrity.  He gets special treatment.  C'mon Corribus.  You know how the world works.

If he doesn't get a second chance, what was the jail for then?

If someone who earns 1500$ a month comes to jail and gets out after 2 years, no one would even care if he finds a job where he gets 1500$ bucks again, right?

He earns less than before. It's not quite his fault sport celebrities aer extremely over"prized"...

I really don't care. But I think athletes are treated excessively strictly by their leagues. They should be able to do anything they want (short of performance-enhancing substances). Who cares what they do off the field?

@Angelito

I'm not saying it should be illegal.  I'm saying it's disgusting.

I am torn here.  I am a strong believer in second chances, but I do also believe his celebrity status got him off easy.  So is it a second chance, when he didn't even really get punished in the first place?  Just proves that it is innocent to proven guilty IF you are rich or famous.

Anyhow, I think he should be kept an eye on, but given a second chance.  Everybody deserves 1 second chance.

I don't know what the normal sentence is for his crime, so I don't know if he got off easy or not. For the NFL and Eagles, it becomes a PR issue and that's their choice.

I'd be curious how it affects his endorsments.

This is a topic, which judging by the small amount of replies, no one cares about.  It should be deleted.

Oh come on Phoenix... you can't let something as insignificant as someone saying your thread should in his opinion be deleted get to you. I mean it's not a bad treat to care about what other people say but really... we all like you, so what if someone doesn't see the purpose of your thread? It really isn't that big of a deal.

Sure but if I do it to Corribus every single time he makes a thread he would (rightfully) get annoyed.  I'm just going to drop this subject now and keep it under control.

I must admit that I also think it is more of a positive thing, than a negative thing, that he has been accepted back in his previous community.

I can understand the problems of the actual rehabilitation (or whatever you want to call it, as rehab has become a bad term in the eyes of some, for some reason, like it would be brain washing, or reducing free will somehow) not being good enough and it shows even more clearly as it is some rich person who gets off easy.

However I don't think it'd help the current problem of the system, which is it is not focused enough, after my taste at least, on the rehab part, to weaken the parts that at least in this case works as it should, i.e. he has served his time and it is not something anyone holds against him (of course everyone is entitled to hold it against him as long as they don't limit his freedom doing so).

Anyhow it is not a case I know that much about, and I'm trying to generalise on very little, so it's probably failing right now.
