I have and loved it. The game is a fun Warlords Battlecry-to-Diablo crossover - in other words, you can play it either as a RTS or a hack'n'slash. You can try the demo, but don't judge the game by the first scenario (instead of a tutorial, you get a rather hard campaign mission).
It is buggy though and there is no support and almost no community. I believe it was a financial flop and abandoned by the devs, while the plans for sequels were scrapped.

You have two options: summon creatures and build your base (like in every other RTS) - in that case you have to wait 30 minutes for your hero to become available again... OR you can start exploring and leveling your hero without the help of any creatures - which is harder but more fun.

Yeah, only 3 maps... Plus the one with water can be easily abused because the AI cannot build ships or defend against those. The largest one is just epic... I love attacking the opponent's base - plays like Warcraft with hundereds of units. There might be new user-made maps though.
Try playing skirmish with the hero only: sell your Call Creatures card in a shop nearby, then recruit some neutrals. As far as I remember, Gnolls were the easiest target (unless they have a Harpy). Goblins were trickier with those shamans (or whatever) raising the dead - you have to go for those first. Once you've hired them, neutrals will keep respawning in their camp and attacking the enemy as your allies. I think I played Elven Ranger most, so it took some hit'n'run in the beginning... But later on he was able to take out dozens of enemies in a single hit using spells.

I think there are two new skirmish maps in the 1.1 patch.
Then again I've never even heard of the game.

This is a really great game. Beautiful ghaphics and lots of units on the screen which you can control individually. The gameplay is a real gem.
It's too bad there's only a couple of offical maps, though, and that the trilogy was canceled.
Check out:

Although, I personally think that the vanilla game without the Sols mod is better. Also, same goes for the user created maps, just not as good and fitting.
Also, check out 'American Conquest' as Heroes of Annihilated Empires is much the same game but with a fantasy theme.
That'd say this is definitely a gem of a game which not many know of.
