prisoners/hostages

I think you should be able to take opposing heroes prisoner.  You could either hold them for ransom, interragate them for information, try to convert them, torture them, let them go, any number of things most of which if your opponent finds out about, they would get mad and go at you a bit more agressively.  Some of them like letting them go might make your opponent happier with you.  I like all of these things, but there are several ways you could maybe take the opposing hero prisoner.  I don't know if all of them are good but here they are.

if you get rid of all your opponents troops and leave their hero alone, you can take it hostage or prisoner.

there might be a theif or assasin hero or creature typte that could attempt to subdue the enemy hero and take it hostage.

you could use a magic spell to hypnotize the opposing hero for a time.

there are several others possibly and all of these could have complications or additional conditions you would need to be able to take the hero.

Personally I think there should be a secondary skill for heroes like stealth or somthing, this could work on the map and on the battlefield and if you wanted to subdue the enemy hero you would have to be "stealthy".  As all things, it would need somthing or many things to counter its ability, a reveal spell, (eagle eye could work for this as well as what it did in HOMM III), if A creature try's to walk over your spot maybey on one of the lower levels of the steath skill you would be revealed.

What do you think?

Most of these things are already in the game...

You can take enemy heroes prisoner. However, the continued presence of flee and surrender implies that you will have to kill them before taking them prisoner.... Hmmm... perhaps they should rename the prison to mortuary.

According to latest news (h3trio interview) each town comes with a prison pre-built.

Ransoms and prisoner exchanges have been discussed at length already in several threads. You can try the Captioves thread I started. (Reach it from my profile.)

This doesn't quite work. The hero could be the only stack in the army and that lone hero could overpower your full army easily. I believe the only likely way to take a hero prisoner is to reduce it to 0 health before the enemy flees or surrender. Do note that if an army flees, they would anyway leave behind any heroes with 0 health.

I don't think so. It's an expressed advantage of heroes that they are immune to certain similar affects that would affect creatures, such as the Charm and Diplomacy abilities. For armies without a hero in them, the enemy can take them over with heroes who have these skills.

Hypnotize might work for heroes. Then again, it may not. It depends on the duration of the spell. If this spell lasts until end of combat, then I hope it won't work for heroes. If it is limited in some other way, then it could perhaps be used on heroes.

On the map you have both a Stealth ability and a Scouting ability for heroes to give the hero invisibility on the map, and to reveal otherwise invisble heroes/troops. In combat, you shouldn't be able to make yourself invisible to escape attacks.

If you mean persuasion abilities, then you already have both Charm and Diplomacy which are similar. A third skill doing something similar seem like overkill.
