Translated HoMM3 Maps Project

Jim Vogan and I have started a project where we are translating non English maps to English. All versions of H3 maps (RoE, AB, SoD and WoG) are being translated. So far, we have over 60 maps available for download and all maps are in English. When you download the zipped file, you also get the original text that was in the original map, so, if you wanted to play the map in the original text, you can. The maps are translated as close as possible to the original text. No storylines have been changed at all. And none of the maps have been altered.

If you would like to download some of these maps, go to the Translated HoMM3 Maps pages and choose the ones you would like to play.

We even take requests for maps you would like to see translated. If we don't have the map you'd like to have translated, simply send it to us, and we'll look it over and go from there. The project is ongoing and more maps are added as they're translated. So, you may want to stop by and check out what's new every now and then.

May I suggest my own map (German) for translation?

However, as I see you also translated the German map 'TutAnchAmuns Fluch (TutAnchAmun's Curse)' but didn't fill in the author's name: his nick is M.K.

Consider M.K. 's name on the description box! That's one thing I need is names for those who's maps are up with no name attached. Not all maps have the names of these great creators and I want as many as I can get.  Thanks Tobius.
And if you like send me your map and if it looks good, I'll post it up....translated of course.

And remember......maps are being added all the time!

Great work you are doing!

But are you also planning to do any H5 maps?(talking about russian maps), they are really in greater need of attention because they take much longer to create and therefore there are much fewer H5 maps around the net. Some russian sites seem to have a decent stock but unfortunately I'm unable to read russian.

I would probably translate H5 maps if I had H5.

But for now, we have over 200 H3 maps translated, which puts us at the halfway mark for the Translated H3 maps project.

We also plan on translating H4 maps, but that won't happen for awhile, but it will happen. So for now, download the H3 maps we have and play them while you wait for them.

In fact having H5 is not necessary to translate a map since all texts from H5 maps are included in seperated txt files. And the only editor you need is notepad. Nonetheless I can understand you are not interested if you have no feeling for the game or are unable to see the result.

A H5 map is basically a zip archive that contains a landscape file, several xdb files and text files. So translating a H5 map can be done by unzipping it, translating the textfiles and repacking it with the same folder structure and .h5m extension.

That's not how a proper translation work. Having the game and playing the map several times is a must when translating, specially from hard-to-understand languages, as polish/russian/chinese. If it was only replacing text with "how you feel" one, I bet the result would be disastrous.

Actually it should be okay for H5, since text files for maps are usually limited to the map's name, description and town bios. There's typically no storyline.

Usually it's easy to interpret the context of polish (and thus russian) texts as these languages are flexion-based and indicate more precisely expected subject of sentence.
In chinese however, meaning depends on the accent which is impossible to get from a scrap of text.

You can't be more wrong
Jim Vogan is translating some polish maps and he related me that it was the hardest translations he ever made. Easy to judge when you are your-self polish.

Translating a map is a lot of work even if the spelling is correct. Now, imagine trying to translate a map that is misspelled in its native tongue. That's a real challenge! I've run into a lot of those and I can find days just trying to decipher one. It almost resembles trying to solve a Rubicks cube.

Example of chinese text translated via Google. Find your way through...

I apologize for noy answering right away. I have been rather busy putting up more maps, and I don't frequent this place as often as I should.

Yes.... this is a bit of a challenge to decode, is'nt it? But not impossible. One outlet I found for translating something like this, is to look at all the angles. Is it multi or single player? What are the win/loss conditions of the map? How many factions and who's against who?
And when this does'nt work, then you have to use what's given to you and weave it into a story that's as close as possible as to what the writer is trying to say. That's not an easy thing to do and requires a bit of patience. For my translating experiences using Google, Babrlfish and the like, you'll never get 100 per cent of the translation correct. Not only that, but who's to say the original storyteller can spell correctly in their own language?

You have more things against you than for you when it comes to translating maps. You have to keep that in mind. But you also have to put yourself in the storytellers head for each abd every word in each map to get the full effect of what they are trying to tell. The payoff is sweet when it all comes together though.

So far, 225 maps have been posted on our project pages, with variety of every kind imaginable.

Or hire a professional translator as I did and pay him. On 120 text pages, 10 were translated by a professional. At a cost. But the map deserves it, I can't imagine a more complex or revolutionary WoG map other than TDS.
