Map making tips?

Here are some..

Try to have a rought idea of the basic layout-design of the map..

What kind of map will it be? RPG? Single player? Multi player? Competition map?

Start with small or medium maps first, don go staight to extra large-moving to extra large really stresses you out if you're new to map editing-I get lost when I make extra large maps..

Basically you need to have a good idea of what's our map going to look like, what will it involve...what is needed to win and what is needed to lose..will it have an extremely detailed storyline? Will it be very challenging? Will it look brillant on the graphics?

If you're map editin with H3,be sure to use validate map option.

I will edit this post and add more stuff if I've the time.Currently I've no time now..

Will be back..

Carryover-heros

Heigh ho, I was trying to make a short campaign in HOMM IV, and was wondering how one places the carryover hero(s) in the maps after the first one?  Also, how does one choose to play a home-made campaign when there is no option for that in the menu for the main game?
If this has been covered elsewhere on the boards, I'm sorry for the repitition, just give me a pointer.  Danke!

You place the gray hero icon at the bottom of the palette in the maps that follow the first one.  There's two choices for which hero will carryover:  any hero and specific. Any hero means that if the color of the carryover hero is the same as a hero in a previous map, one of them will be carried over.  So if you want to carry four heroes over and don't care which carryover hero position they end up in, use the Any Hero option.  Specific heroes must have custom names.  After you place the original hero in the first map and give him/her a custom name, their name will appear in the dropdown list to carry over a specific hero.  That is usually the better option.

To play a custom campaign, just use the Scenario option to load it.  Scenarios and campaigns have the same file extenstion in H4.  Only the original campaigns show in the Campagins menu.

Making maps has been my passion for many years, and throughout that time Iīve learned many tricks and ways to improve the quality of the map.
Though, I must admit I have no tips to share, for after all finding new ways how to do certain things in your map yourself is far more interesting than when someone tells you how to do a certain thing. Especially the people who copy others maps I can not understand them, meaning why should you copy a map in some way when you could make one complitely by yourself. Besides lot of wining would be avoided and everybody would be happy.

I myself like the part of creation the most. To build a massive realm of dwarves etc.. gives a mighty feeling. Sometimes when I rest my mind and try not to think of creating another map I open one of my earlier works and as a spectator roll over the map and search for stuff that look rather nicely done.(though i hadnīt seen the small detail myself the first place.)
Probably all maps should have a backround story, even those that maybe donīt seem to need one, where you just go off slashing everybody into pieces. In my maps story plays a very important role, and if it was forgotten or not held important then the probability of screwing up the entire game is 90%.
Lastly I want to say that whatever map you are making it should be done with care.

At the time Iīm making a map of the lord of the rings. It has currently  been turning out well, even though it is very difficult to create landscapes that bare no information as who live there or what lies there, such as Minhiriath and for instance what is around the lost realm of Angmar. I have searched alot material to restore the middle-earth as Tolkien might had expected certain plsces to look like etc..(I couldnīt possibly leave the lands blank of which i donīt have information. Iīm trying my best to stick to the story and be as detailed and sharp as possible with the creation of the map.
Very helpful have been some maps that have also tried to follow the book and therefore have been the biggest source from which I have learned to avoid mistakes that have been made with this map(LOTR).

I hope you will enjoy your mapmaking as much as I do and make them unique.

Hello!

Im currently workng on a campaign, Nicolai's Return xD and I wonder:
Is it posible to disable one of the upgrades in the town just as in the campaigns? Because I planned in letting Nicolai use only the Tribes of the East uppgrades.  Anyone know a solution?
