I've contacted Warmonger, to see if he'd like this to be an add-on to VCMI, and to help finish the original project first, so I just need him email me back. So far I've isolated about 10 script necessary for altering the monster upgrade properties, however, I've found another way to go about the upgrading process. In WOG, there are ways to upgrade creatures to another. You can even change the castle upgrades to accommodate. If we made every creature that way and put them into creature sets, instead of strings of creatures in a town set, that might solve the coding problem of trying to fit new code in, and all we'd have to do is tweak the towns a bit to accept individual sets instead of strings. Tell me what you guys think.

Edited by Warmonger at 08:23, 02 Apr 2010.

I didn't answer as it looks like another April's Fool joke, but since the discussion goes on, I may add a few words:

Three-level system has been discussed and proposed many times, but it leads to many unexpected problems:

-Pairing Subterranean gates
-Support for cartographer and Skyship
-Determining position of all objects will become more complicated
-It may interefere with pretty much all existing objects and scripts

So unless someone sits down and considers all possible scenarios and issues related, we won't do it.

Multiple upgrades are pretty obvious and not hard to implement, it's all about designing appriopriate menu, such as one in H5, that will allow us to freely choose upgrades and not cause any errors (such as free or negative cost of upgrade).

Allies systems and multiplayer are yet to be implemented, post your proposals on VCMI board. Same is true for bigger battlefields / armies.

I don't know what you mean by "faster" game - H3 is 11 years old and people even suggested porting our much more demanding version to smartphones.

I feel like all changes suggested by the poster can only be done with the original source code only. Otherwise, he or someone else will be typing and typing forever to get the desired effect. Hopefully I'm wrong but experience with Slavas work tells me otherwise. Every little change took him forever to put in. Not because of a lack of knowledge, but because of all the lines required to make any small thing work at all. It's very demanding without the source code.

Instead of proving how impossible this is, I think we can all safely assume, that this was an AF joke.

And a really bad one. Posted too early, with no explanation given afterwards.

Someone with such skills just cannot be a madman thinking he will do more than the WoG Team and NWC COMBINED. The rating of this topic as "funny", as well as Google knowing close to nothing about mr "Sonny La Batos" and definitely nothing about his famous projects for Microsoft, Valve, Sony and so on all point out that this is just a fantasy.

BTW, I won't get into much details, but after making some calculations it turns out that to make 4-6 upgrades for all H3 creatures (excluding the original upgrades, commanders, etc.) we would need 340-510 new creatures. Now, putting the technical problems aside: till the end of the year we have 274 days left. So this means making 1-2 creatures daily . With animation, sounds, coding, etc. every day, including weekends and holidays .
Of course if you just think for a moment you will find much more proof that this is just nonsense .

An Update

I've read all the wog scripts, and gone through all the original .LOD files. I'm still learning ERM, but it looks like a fourth upgrade will won't be as hard as I thought, just a ton of work! From what I can see, it involves changing about 20 of the scripts, and adding about 7 files back into the game. (graphics, variables, sounds, etc.) I've got 58 days left. The final product will be in a WOG update. I am not Salamandre, nor am I an idiot. This was not an April Fools joke. I've taken some consideration to each of the values in this project and I've had a plan for how to get them done. The end of the year still remains the goal, and if we don't finish, we'll post an open beta at that time. If we don't finish, we'll keep working. I found the comment asking to ban me really funny. Even if this WAS an April Fools joke, please point out the wrong that would get me banned. The creature count was calculated before I posted this. I've planned on around 700 new creatures. The key would be to find an efficient way of implementing the new creatures into the game. Once that's found, the only limits will be the imagination of our graphics team. AcidDragon, check this link out: http://www.google.com/search?q=AcidDragon   You don't even show up on these forums! As for my beta work, do you guys honestly think I'd use this name? When you're on a beta team ranging from 50-1000 people, you can be given a randomly generated number or your IP address for a username (depending on the project) and a serial code for a password to a forum or chat room that is private. You wouldn't find it by Googling this name. As for this thread being marked funny, I'd request that be taken off.

Oh my god.... so you really ARE SERIOUS?

I never said you are an idiot. But you are either a genious, a madman or a liar.

Firstly - personal stuff ;P

AcidDragon, check this link out: http://www.google.com/search?q=AcidDragon   You don't even show up on these forums!

Maybe because I do not work on these forums. I am a Polish fan and run a Polish site. Just click that small banner under my post to get there. However It's quite easy to track my work down. For starters - the WoG credits . Then try typing in "New Upgrades" - you may want to learn something from that if you want to work on upgrades yourself.
When you type in "Slava Salnikov" you'll also get a ton of results. When we type in "Sonny La Batos" we get almost nothing. No links, no presentation, no titles, no work samples. You just come here and say you can do anything provided you have a team of 25 people. Now even if you have the skills you claim - do you really expect us to believe you just because you said so? Fans should give their free time and skills just because you say "hey, let's make something great together"? Do you consider that serious?

But OK, let's say you really are who you claim to be and you have the needed skills. Let's just say you have done your work using a different name or this just wasn't referenced by anyone.

Now on to proving you're mad and shouldn't be treated seriously.

1.Can you tell me how in the world do you want to make 700 creatures? Now even putting the coding problems aside. In the original H3 game there are 143 creatures. Those vere developped over *3 years* by a team of *proffesional* artists, designers, coders and such, who were *paid*, as it was there *job*.
Do you really think it's realistic to create a set of *700* creature graphics in *9 months* by a just a handful of amateurs who will be working from time to time?
Even if we cut one zero off it is STILL impossible to do 70 good looking, well thought creatures in 9 months. Just to compare - WoG on the course of 3 years managed to add 38 creatures and most of them are just recoloured. And you really think that there are graphic artists just doing nothing out there and waiting for a leader like you?

2. Working with the compiled H3 code.
Slava was working with the H3 code for years and years and even he didn't manage to add a third level to the map or overcome the barrier of 255 possible creatures. His work was continued however by the CoreWoG Team and after some more years the 255 barrier is most likely overcome.
Now - you say it's your goal to do everything in less than one year.

Let's repeat - Slava and the WoG Team - 6 years, CoreWoG +2 more years and counting.
You and your team - less than one year.
Yes, makes perfect sense.

Ok, but we already "know" you are much better than Slava. Now there doesn't seem to be a H3 fan on the face of this planet with skills equal to yours. At least nobody like that showed up in the last 8 years. And you're counting for a team of 5-10 more coders?
Like I said - perfect sense.

3. Redoing entire graphics.
That's basically redoing the whole game! You can rewrite the source code in those 9 months while you're at it. When I talked to Tow from the VCMI team, when they were just starting out and seeked support from the WoG Team one of their arguments was that it's not the source code that is the most time-consuming to redo. It would be the graphics. But since the graphics are done and will not be altered, rewriting the source code may be possible.

You want to redo the entire graphics... I mean... even when I'm writing these words I'm like... "this guy is either maikng fun of me or should really seek some psychological help". I even don't know why I'm writing such an obvious thing - it's IMPOSSIBLE to redo the 3-year work of proffesionals from NWC in 9 months by amateurs and with higher quality. Do I really need to prove this?

4. Other stuff.
Now not only with 25 people you want to redo the entire game, add 700 creatures and add a third map level. You also want to work on multiplayer and pretty much redo the whole game system.
Wouldn't it be easier for you just to make your own game instead of a mod? ;P I mean - really rewriting the entire game code would be MUCH quicker than creating 700 creatures and playing around with asembler.
So just do your own game in 9 months! The ammount of work would actually cover at least 5 games like Heroes III.

And besides that...
Do you really see a point of starting a new project at this time, when the fan developer scene is divided too much already (between CoreWoG and HotA, plus VCMI) and almost every fan who has greater knowledge and talent than doing ERM scripts and using H3 tools to replace some creatures is working on one of the mentioned projects? Do you really expect there are 25 more talented people that are just doing nothing and waiting for someone like you to lead them?

If you really want to do something firstly try something that is possible, secondly - join an existing team, as the 3 of them desperately need new coders (and possibly other talents too).

Good ideas out there. It's always cool to dicuss it.

BTW, from my non-active-membmer point of view, the best thing to do right now is to join the VCMI team to speed-up the project. Correct me if I'm wrong, but once VCMI is done, it will be much easier to create and include mods to the game.

Of course, this will still need a lot of work, especially this one. This can't be done in one year for sure, but in 2-3 years after the VCMI release, why not ?
