WOW….I am now overwhelmed…Please help me
I have played through Homm5 3 or 4 times over the past few years and I love it. Since I now have a new job where I travel A LOT, I upgraded my laptop to game on and now spend my many nights in hotels gaming.
A friend of mine gave me both TotE and HoF since he knew I loved HoMM5 so much.
So I have now installed all three to my laptop and went in search of patches.
Well, that is when I ran into you guys. All I can say is frigging’ WOW.
I have found a new home.
But, I am NOT a modder myself. I just love to add any type of extra content to my games I can get my hands on. But this is where the problem is.
You guys have SO MUCH stuff that I am completely lost.
So my question is this: where would you guys recommend I start?
I mean what would be some good mods for me to install to start out with?
I am not so concerned about mods that simply change the visuals of the characters or monsters. That can come later.
What I am looking for is mods that either enhance the game play by adding new maps, creatures, items, abilities, etc.. or mods to help balance out game play more.
I hope I am making sense here but after about 3 hours of reading through this site my brain is a little fried.
As I said, I have all 3 HoMM games and all the patches.
Where should I start now?

-For creatures you should try the NCF (I don't use it myself so I can't really comment on it).
-To enhance gameplay check the Advanced AI mod: http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=27296 a must have IMO if you play single player games (not compatible with campaigns).
-There is the Unlock all heroes mod if you want campaign heroes in your games.
-The ingame skill wheel is a valuable tool when you don't know all skills and abilities by heart (yet).
-The mod that adds in game information neutral counts, town specialties... I can't remember the exact name (check the workshop).
-You should check out custom templates if you want to make your own maps with the map generator http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=24002 (there are alternatives like the RTMG but I'm not familiar with it).
-Once you're bored with the regular game you could give the HOMM5 Role Playing Edition a try (changes many things). http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=32305

I've put together a visual conversion Necropolis tier 7 Knights not Dragons (and other variants) http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=24731 (the screenshots are down but the files are still there).
I've also modified the Unlock 48 Campaign Heroes mod to use the Unique Heroes Models that were made by the community to put together my 13 Heroes mod (a customization of Unlock 48 campaign heroes with Unique heroes models) that aims at putting the same number of heroes per faction and balance campaign heroes so they don't have extra points, I haven't had much feedback on this mod but it works (I have a problem with my screenshots but once again the files are still there) you can find a link for this mod in my signature.

Thanks Cleave. That is exactly the info I was looking for.
I will be playing ToTE so I downloaded and installed the AIupgrade, the NCF and creature megapack.
Now I just need to get some maps since all this stuff is not compatible with the campaign.

-New Arenas mod.
-Super Growth for poor maps
-Random map generator. You can choose the one by SimonaK, Idan or even good old Tapani (althought it doesn't support ToE).
