Onlive

Ok...Computing POWER with Console (looking for the word..) Normalcy (?) (ie where you don't have to worry about if something is 'powerful' enough, or have the right video card etc).  Seems like a good idea .. right?

First I will explain what I am talking about.  Onlive.  It stores the game on a server, and people access it to play it.  Which is good, as the systems won't have to be quite so powerful to play the high end games.  They will even offer their own version of a Console, in case you don't own a computer.  Sounds great.

Except.  You will never own the games.  Ever.  If something happens, and they go under..wave bye to all the saves, games you play, etc.  Second, they will determine content which I am not sure I like.  If a game becomes too controversial..and you play it..it could just vanish.  Where if you OWNED it, that would not happen.

So..what do you think?  Good idea?  Bad Idea?  Computer gaming has always been a bit more high end graphic wise, but console gaming has the advantage that a game will play on any of the consoles it is made for.

Edit: Oh, and I saw this coming a LONG time ago.  It was inevitable.

Oh and in case your wondering, anything that can play video is supposed to be able to play the games from Onlive.  That means..that even a PDA or Smartphone will be able to play games that it requires top end gaming computers to play currently.

Agreed, I think (and some people will call me out for being a conspiracy theorist) that as a species, we're heading towards more restrictions and control by people in power. In the case of videogames, the people in power are the game companies themselves. What Blizzard is trying to do with Starcraft II, what Ubisoft has been doing with their DRM, and what some game companies want to do are all forms of user control (and monetization, but that's besides the point in this discussion).

That "game rental" concept also applies if you have a Wii and download any of their classic games. Theoretically, you own it once you purchase it. Practically, the Wii hard drive is 512MB. It's more than optimal for save games only, but if you get too many games, it'll fill up in a hurry. Once that happens...you have to erase some. What happens if the classic games server is taken down tomorrow? Did you ever own the game or was it only rented to you?

It's a scary precedent, and I don't think I like the way the industry as a whole is going. Microsoft and Sony are trying to copy the Wii, which is just a case of "follow the leader". And then people complain that game quality is on the decline... -_-

Well, I meant the technology and computer games going to a console like atmosphere but yes that too.  I am stuck on the fence with this.  I like the concept, but the execution sounds like it is going to leave a lot to be desired.  Also, Modding might be a thing of the past (hard to mod something that is stored somewhere ELSE), and fan related things tend to give a game more UMPH.

I wouldn't be surprised if things like profile data and save files would be the only bits stored on the player's computer.

Generally if this ever gets big, it's bad news for ATI and NVidia (or at least a good number of their employees, as the companies may just adapt to a smaller market).

The Wii lets you copy to and play your downloaded games from SD cards now.
