shall have factions in H6, in your opinion?

i did tier range from 4 to 8,
and the same with alternate creatures (similar to H4)

7 Regulars, or on my case, more akin to H2's mixed up upgrades.

Many factions have MANY creatures that could fit with it and fill up a space, but it's mainly Haven that somewhat holds it back.

6 tiers is too little, there's too many creatures you would want to fit into a faction and with 6 tiers, you're cutting many of them out of the game unless you make them neutrals. But that simply means they don't get a lot of screentime

8 tiers is... Well, awkward. 7 tiers is "just right", with 8 the balance is shifted and tier 1 again loses in strength.

I'd rather go with 7 tiers, out of which 2 are alternative upgrades, and your army having 9 slots. Gives some room for customization in terms of splitting stacks or taking 50-50 alternative upgrades, without leaving a complete stack at home.

On the other hand, being forced to leave a stack behind was a rather interesting element imo in H1.

Other aspects, as uogrades and slots, shall come, maybe, in later polls. THis is just about the number of base creature tiers
EDIT:
someone voted 8, altenrates?! That's much, meaning 16 base creatures (THIS IS NOT BOUT UPOGRADES PEOPLE!)

This is actually really hard, because I can see it working with both 5 alternate and 7 standard, or even 7 tiers when only 2-3 tiers are alternate (random between towns like the upgrades in H2).

I voted 7 tiers alternates. I think it gives plenty of space for creativity, but not too many units.

7 is a good number, not too many, not too few. Also it has a nostalgic feeling over it, no real reason to change it.

I think the poll is not quite clear. I voted "7 Alternates" because I thought you meant Alternate UPGRADES, i.e. TotE style. I don't like H4 types of alternates. Too many wasted creatures that way.

but I guess I understand what you mean...I'll state in the first post, too, that the way of upgrading is NOT AT ALL of importance here. When having evaluated this (will let it open some more weeks at least, I'll open a poll for what kind of upgrading shall be done...

Well that depends on who you're facing, I mean against a Tanker hero you'd obviously go for Archers and Spellcasters, but against an Archer/Spellcaster hero you'd go for Quick-Strikers, and against a Quick-Striker hero, probably Tankers.

My point is that Alternate Upgrades take pretty good care of this. If you put your mind into it so that the upgrades have different qualities (for instance, Footman upgrades into Squire (defensive) or Vindicator (offensive), or Scouts upgrades into Assassin (ranged) or Stalker (melee)) you can achieve just that element of unpredictability and strategic choice, as Vangelis mentions. (Of course, you must avoid the pitfalls like Hunter upgrades into Master Hunter (ranged) or Arcane Archer (better ranged), which obviously makes the whole choosing thing meaningless.)

My issue with the Heroes 4 system is that you have a lot of interesting units (with appropriate artworks, special abilities, etc.) that you never get into game. For instance, choose between Naga or Genie. If you choose the Genie, Naga never comes into play.

Of course if you have an unlimited number of creatures at hand, it won't make any difference, but in terms of coming up with creatures, making artworks, etc., I think it's much more easy to make two different upgrades than to make two different creatures. So you use your resources a lot better.

6 or 7 tiers.
With a mix of upgrade system between HoMM 2 and 5. Not every creature would be upgradeable but some would have more upgrades and some would have alternative upgrades. It's just plain idiotic to upgrade something like Griffin or Manticore. They should make realistic upgrade costs for the dwellings too. Not like it is in H5 with every upgraded dwelling costing more than the regular.

Well you could solve the Assassin/Stalker thing by having 2 different base creatures, one melee, one ranged.

This is only an issue if you're stuck with a single town, if you have 2 or 3 you can have one town producing Genies while another produces Naga. Of course, spreading them around will end up being a bit of a logistical nightmare, but that's just a prompt to come up with a new logistics system right (necessity is, after all, the mother of invention)?

Well I've found that DnD is a good resource because it has oh-so-many creatures. In fact there are times when I've made a faction with 8 or 9 creatures, and had a real struggle on my hands trying to decide which creatures to cut.

I don't see why, I mean, the Imperial Griffin is better trained and armoured right. what's so idiotic about that? Upgrading Ghosts though...

I've voted 7 alternate, but I've not seen my actual favored answer. Which would be 6-8 with upgrades. Alternates are good for strategic varation, but if you don't have them, there's room for more factions.
