New England is the Best Team Ever(and I am paying off a bet)

Wow!  In what will go down in the annuls of the NFL as one of the most exciting and greatest Superbowls ever, the New England Patriots defeat the much favored and seemingly superior team, the Saint Louis Rams.  I am amazed and not wholly disappointed.  You see I was a fool.  And the cost of being a fool is addressing you, my reader in this exposition of the greatness of that team from New England.

As I watched the last field goal attempt, I waited hoping beyond hope that something would go wrong.  But alas it was not to happen, because I am the worst betting man that God has ever put on this planet.  It doesn’t matter how many touchdowns that the Rams were favored by, the mere fact that I had a wager on that team was their certain downfall.  I am an idiot and cannot pick a winning team to save my life.  I actually root for the teams in Seattle Washington.  Yes that means that I have to sit though Seahawk games and I actually believe that they will win.  Watching the Superbowl, I am thinking that I am glad that the Seahawks are going into the NFC west next year, because now they will have a chance.  My wool headed notions even go to the Supersonics; I actually believe that they have a chance when anyone who knows anything about basketball realizes that that team has very little chance of even making the playoffs.  Baseball was better to me this year; when the Seattle Mariners became the winningest team in baseball history, but of course they blow it all in the playoffs and no one will remember an accomplishment that was not capped off by winning the world series.  College Football is okay with the University of Washington Huskies, but the fool that I am, I am not really a Husky fan (you see I prefer the Washington State Cougars, perennial losers, nut the school that produced Drew Bledsoe, the highly paid quarterback that I though should have started for the Patriots (Man, I just cannot make a correct call)).

Let’s talk about how good the Patriots are this year.  I was very surprised that they made it through the playoffs and even made the Superbowl.  I even have a rooting interest in the Patriots, they have the afore mentioned Drew Bledsoe on their team (Who came from my favorite college team) and they also have Lawyer Malloy who grew up not far from my families home in Tacoma, Washington.  But I am too stupid to jump on the Patriot bandwagon.  I have to listen to Sports geeks who brainwashed me into believing the Rams hype.  I must not be my own man.  I guess that I am a man who is easily led and cannot be trusted to make well-informed discussions.  I am a puppet of an overblown mass media that virtually gave the Rams the win without even playing the game.  I go out now to tattoo “Make up your own Mind!” on my forehead, (it will compliment my “Things are Larger than they Appear” tattoo on my, well you know).

RedSoxFan3 e-mail must now be added to my list so that I can check with him on all future betting decisions.  He has proven to be the smarter, and more realistic of the sports betters out there.  I only hope that he got some suckers to actually bet him money on the game so that he can add that to this confession of shame on my part.  I know that none of the rest of you Patriot believers out there had the guts to pony up to this wager (and for that I am very glad for I said I would cover all bets and that would have made for a long night of writing.)

I suppose I should have realized that the team from Boston was going to win.  I have it on good authority that Boston and the whole New England region is one of the finest areas in the nation.  I have yet to have the pleasure of visiting there, but I hope to remedy that as soon as possible.  Boston is the cradle of our great nation; the patriots that came from there, John and Sam Adams, Ben Franklin and the others made our country what it is today.  Even in the civil war, New Englanders contributed much to keep this country whole.  Chamberlain, my favorite civil war hero, was a college professor in the great state of Maine.  Enough cannot be said about how wonderful that Boston is, just eat their baked beans or clam chowder and you will fall in love with the area.

The Boston Celtics is without a doubt the finest NBA team that has ever existed.  Their history is long and full of championships.  From the early days of the NBA until the Larry Bird years the Celtics have had nothing but success.  People now are down on the Celtics, but only through the tragic loss has this team fallen, and they will not be kept down forever. No, they will now start their new ascendancy and within a few short seasons they will take their rightful place on top of the NBA.

The Boston Red Sox have to be the odds on favorite to win the World Series this year.  Great pitching and outstanding defense will catapult them strait to the top.  They will destroy the hated Yankees and humble the valiant Mariners, who will lose to the Red Sox thus allowing them to face and beat the pretenders from the National League.  It is said that the Sox have a curse put on them when they traded the finest baseball player to ever live to the Yankees, but never forget that the Babe was a Red Sox first and undoubtedly loved them best.

The Colleges around Boston are unequalled in their quality and I have ever confidence that BC, or Harvard, or BU will always give their best effort.  But the Uconn  Huskies set the standard that other schools need to study in order to have the elite basketball team in both the Men’s and Women’s game.  How can anyone not choose to go to a New England school if they are lucky enough to get in.

Last but not least is the Superbowl Champion New England Patriots.  They are the team of destiny.  No one could ever have thought that they would make it.  Controversy surrounded the starting of Brady over Bledsoe.  We have all been proven wrong.  It is Brady and always will be Brady.  The best that New England can do is to trade the still good Bledsoe for more players that will make this Superbowl Champion even better.  How can they not help but repeat next year.  This team has not even hit its prime yet and is destined to form the next NFL dynasty.  People will look back at this game and say that it has made the Superbowl exciting again dare I say put the super back in Superbowl?).

So as one Oldtimer to a RedSoxFan I am pleased that your team won.  I was an idiot to ever doubt them.  I hope they come back year after year.  I am a man of my word and you won the bet fair and square.  Congratulations, Oldtimer.

Then never talk about how boston teams are going to win again, you're jinxing them. Say they're going to lose, that will be good luck.

Why I chose the Patriots:
One, they stopped the running game of the Steelers to virtually nothing. Two, their secondary is very good. Three the Rams showed a BIG weakness against the Eagles. Four, when Marshall Faulk is not being used very much the Rams go from being by far the best team in the league to just a good team. Five, I knew that the Patriots would match up well against Marshall Faulk, because the Pats stopped the running game of the Steelers so well (They had 3 or 4 guys swarming the Steelers's running backs the whole game) and the secondary of the Patriots can really put a pounding on the opponent. This would stop Marshall Faulk from consistantly getting 20 yards on a screen pass.

The Patriots were the perfect team to match up against the Rams. Very physical, and very mental. The physical teams were beaten by the Rams, because the Rams out thought them and the mental teams were ran off the field by the speed of the Rams.

One person who isn't getting a lot of credit is Bill Belicheck (is that spelled right?)
He is the best coach in the league. He made the Patriots, play as a team. He signed players from around the league, that weren't idiots like Randy Moss. Randy Moss plays for noone except Randy Moss. (Boy, that was redundant) All of these players were dirtdogs, played their hearts out to win as a team, not to get 200 rushing yards in a game rushing. Take a look at Drew Bledsoe. He handled that very well for the benefit of the team. He could have argued and fought the whole thing and eventually got his job back, but it would have killed the chemistry and that desire to win attitude of the Patriots.

About the Boston curse:

Before Carlton Fisk had his name on the banner up in right field, the retired numbers of the Redsox were the equivilant of the date of the last time the Redsox won a world series.

Joe Cronin's #4 and Ted Williams' #9 on May 29, 1984; Bobby Doerr's #1 on May 21, 1988; Carl Yastrzemski's #8 on August 6, 1989; and Carlton Fisk's #27 on September 4, 2000.

So those numbers are 4, 9, 1, 8, and 27. The last time the RedSox won a World Series, 9/4/18 or September 4, 1918. That's a good trivia question for all your sports fanatics.

Also note that Carlton Fisk had his number retired on September 4, 2000.

Since Carton Fisk retired, the Redsox played unbelievably well, at least until Dan Duquette fired Jimmy Williams the best coach in the league and the PATRIOTS WON THE SUPER BOWL. My hope is that Carlton Fisk broke the curse by retiring his number as a Redsox.

But hopefully this year with Manny Ramirez, Nomar Garciaparra, and Pedro Martinez, they will crush every team. An important statistic, those 3 players never played in the same game through all of last year. Next year I think that they will all be very healthy. Trot Nixon is going to surprise a lot of people next season. He is going to have an incredible year. I'm thinking almost as good as Manny and Nomar, if not better. Their pitching is going to be very good next year like it was at the beginning of last season.

I'm also expecting the Bruins, the Redsox or the Celtics to win it all or at least go to the World Series/Stanley... within the next year.

Now the Celtics, if they can get a really good center, who can block a lot of shots and is a rebounding machine, the Celtics will dominate almost every team in the league.

As for the Bruins, I don't watch much Hockey, but they are going to do really, really well in the playoffs this year.

I have to do things when the pain is fresh.  I am watching the game with the Pats in the lead just thinking to myself, "Oh my God, I am going to have to write the freakin Bet."  So when I lost, I got on the comp to write (with my wife laughing at me) Just to get the foul taste out of my mouth.

Man, you blew it bigtime! And is that post really the full two 12-size pages on Word? j/k

Good to see you are a man of your word, though.

But I must say I laughed out loud when I read the newspaper here in my faraway country yesterday. After all that verbal abuse you were giving the Pats and anyone who believed in them! Man, I was like, wow, this guy is sure of himself, he must know what he's talking about, those poor Patriots doesn't stand a chance when facing the invincible Rams of St. Louis!

And RedSoxFan, don't let him get away with it this easily! You have to tell it to him 'til his ears fall off!

I'm really sorry about kicking you when you're down, Oldtimer, but I've always perceived you as an untouchable, always in control and always on top of things. I just can't let this chance go by!
