Where are games saved in Windows 7?

I have been playing a scenario of HOMM IV in Windows 7 64 bit. Before shutting down my PC I usually save my last save to a back-up drive. But I can't find the saves. They must be on my hard drive somewhere because if I restart the game, all my saves are there.

I tried starting in Windows XP SP 3 compatibility mode, but then I had no saves to load from the main menu. If I start a new game, however, the saves are then stored in my 3DO/Heroes of Might and Magic IV/games file, and they are available for loading regardless of whether or not I start in a compatibility mode.

Is there any way to find the saves I made when not playing in Windows XP compatibility mode? (Right now the only place I can find them is if I start the game without a compatibility mode. Then I can see them and load them from the game's main menu. I just can't find a way to copy them to a back-up drive.)

Win7 still has a "Search". Have you used a key-word in one of the maps (to reduce the size of the found-list) to see all locations? I would think you should see "all paths to all saves" that way.

I appreciate the reply Markkur, but the procedure did not work.

I searched for all .h4s (Heroes IV save files), and the only ones that popped up were the ones I made while using the Windows XP compatibility mode.

It is not an emergency situation. If my PC crashes or if it is infected with a terminal virus, I will have lost only a couple of hours of game play on a stand-alone scenario. Almost certainly I will be able to finish the scenario without that happening.

However...after I finish the scenario, I now know two ways to prevent losing my saves again. I can use one of the two Windows XP compatibility modes, or I can right-click the start-up icon, click the Compatibility tab, and click "Run this program as an administrator." Either way, the saves are then placed in their normal file (Computer/Local Disk/Prgram Files(x86)/3DO/Heroes of Might and Magic IV/games).

Nevertheless I am curious as to where those hidden save files are. Is it possible that I am able to load them from the game's main menu without them being on my hard drive? Can they be stored in my RAM (system memory)? It's a mystery. They are there (in the game), but they are not there, on my hard drive. At least they did not show up on any search.

Try looking around here

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramFiles(x86)\GOG.com\HOMM\Games

I finished the scenario; so I no longer want to back up those saves. Henceforth I will use "Run this program as an administrator," which will allow me easy access to the saves in the HOMM III and IV directories.

Nevertheless, I checked back here out of curiosity, and the reply by Invictus was a bullseye.

At first I thought his reply was no help. I could not fine any "AppData" file. But I went into Tools/FolderOptions and clicked "show hidden files". The "AppData" file appeared, and I was then able to follow his route. I found all of those lost Heroes IV saves.

Thank you very much, Invictus.

My heroes IV install was in D:\somefolder\ and after I got win7 and instaled it I have no problem with saved games, they're all saved to the same folder like in previous windowses.

Windows 7 overreacts with the protections, it does not allow copying of files in program files without administrator aproval (even then sometimes makes problems) hence the path C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramFiles(x86)\GOG.com\HOMM\Games\ that some people and the game use.

This knowledge may help you increase the use of other programs too not just heroes iv, if you want a normal homm 4 try instaling in other directory, for example C:\games\homm-IV\ or D:\games\homm-IV\ or just lower your security by enabling more users to write data in certain folders.
