the first time i ever saw homm

was reading a reply by moc on one of my posts and he mentioned the first time he ever saw homm.

it made me remember.

it was at yawacko's and pandora's house, they weren't yawacko and pandora yet and i wasn't MKLTHRKNGL.

they'd just gotten a hold of this game and they wanted me to see it. HOMM 2

and for all of us the rest is history.

it was the first online gaming experience i'd had and is still the one i prefer over all others.

anybody else have a good story about there first time!! hehehehehe!!!!!

strange music

first time i saw heroes was heroes I, i was visiting robs place but his wierd friend Nick (to become roomates later) http://www.toheroes.com/pics/1nick.jpg  he looked pretty much the same that day, and thats what rob's computer/bedroom looked like.  Anyways I was there to see rob i had only known him for a few months.  They were playing something i almost thought was a music program clicking to make strange sound effects.

He didnt explain the game to me until many weeks later, and I never played with that game until heroes 2 came out.

U can see a picture of me and rob in a frame on the desk though behind all those cd's.

When i first saw HOMM, it was on a demo and i thought it was crap at the time. This is because i was hooked on Master of Magic and I could not stop playing that game.

I also saw a review for HOMM2 and thought it looked good but was still not convicned about buying it.

Eventually after playing Master of Magic still i was blue in the face i decided to give the demo a go for a change.  The demo had the Dragon Pass Mapon it and it only lasted a certain number of weeks.

Before i knew what was happening i was addicted to it, but still not interested in buying the game.  I wanted to make sure i was playing this right.

At the time HOMM and HOMM2 was out on box set and i had changed to WIN98.  Since Master of Magic could not work becuase of the Base Memory problems i Bought the comppendium.

And i must say HOMM was good but HOMM2 was far, far better.  The choices of heros and castles, the Music and the playability was awesome.  i have never loked back since then.  I also managed to recruit one of my friends into being addicted this as well.

I wonder it this game is classed as a Cult Following?

same deal for me diff time line than rychen/zud

I first saw kings bounty on genesis and really enjoyed it when i played it because it reminded me of might and magic 3 the game i was currently playing alot of then i noticed the simularities between the names and put 2 and 2 together bought kings bounty for the comp(cus i didn't have a genesis then) was really fun. Then Homm came out was playing alot of strategy games like master of orion and x-com again not putting 2 and 2 together that it also came from the creators of kings bounty and might and magic. Then again realized the names and the monsters and been playing homm ever since

a brief history of Prometheus

I was playing 30 or so chess games a day on ICC when my friend Craig (aka Armageddon) came over with a big grin on his face and told me he had this great game that I would love that you could play online.  We had worked together on the early M&M games back when we were roomies in the service and he explained this was a different type of M&M game.  I was immediately hooked on the music and gameplay.  I cancelled my chess account.  He introduced me to a few online players. My first online opponent was Bert (aka Solmyr) back in '97.  We all setup games by email and ICQ back then.  He also showed me the Oracle League, a modest, newly opened league for online competition with only 5 people signed up including its founder Myk Cameron (aka Beowulf).  I think I was number 6 or 7.  Before long we had 16 or so people and things gradually grew from there. We added divisions as more people found the league.  Eventually I found myself involved in the administration aspects of the league and at that point I knew I was hooked for the life of the game and its sequels.  One of my jobs was to identify cheaters and this required me to improve my skill so that I could tell the difference between master-level play and master-level cheating.  This was a chore, but the payoff was that it forced me to become one of the top ranked players in the world, enhancing my addiction.

Later a net newbie (but with lots of hotseat xp) appeared on the scene, wildly challenging all of the top players in the world and asserting his prowess....he defeated everyone, gained their respect and ushered in a new era of Heroes. His name was Vesuvius...(a story for another time)

love at first sight (not mel this time) :p

lets see ... 7 years ago ... 1995

my oldest brother (6 years older) was into the internet a lot, and was trading a lot of his computer games for other computer games, etc .. (the game swapper)

my brother's friend gave my brother a game (HoMM1) which he was about to return, and my brother found someone online who was going to trade a game for this HoMM1.

So before my brother packaged it up to send off, he decided to check it out ... while he was play-testing, I walk into the room and watch him play ...
that night we stayed up until 3am (4 hours past my bedtime).

my brother and I wanted to keep the game, so ... my brother sent an email to the one he was going to send it to, saying:
"Well, I'd rather not make this trade ... because my younger brother was playing it the other night, and it's now his favorite game, and he'd be REALLY upset if I trade this ..... "  (he didn't mention how he was ALSO addicted)
the response email:  "hehe yeah, I understand how that goes."

so we kept HoMM1   ... and when HoMM2 was out, I was already a professional

I first say homm in the early days of homm3 (yes a little newer)

I was at a freinds place engaging in one of many long hour dungeons and dragons evenings.. ANd a buddy that was there said "you guys tired ??" No's all around

And so he set up the first game of heroes I had ever played on the 6 player hotseat on warlords (that 8 player large one level stock map)

And so the addiction began, I chose dungeon with Geon! lol I figured learning my opponents spells could be useful ..

well here I am still addicted

When I first started playing comp games , I was really hooked on the dragon/wizard world kinda thingy
Back in kindergarden/1 grade I made alot of weird story's about me being the 'ole' wizard with the gnarled staff and a spell or two up my sleeve <---- just looked over some of my teachers comments on those story's ( LOOL )
Then about a few years back I bought my first comp and quickly followed by several games ! ( 1 one was Daggerfal )
After playing that game for a long time I also had a friend commin over with a large grin on his face, asking me if I was in for a woppin
HOMM2 !!!!
We played on just one comp and always randoms ( or atleast I think it was random ) Somehow I quickly developed a 'crush' on Craig?? ( hehehe) and those One-eyed-cyclops.
some might ask themselves ; What happend to the 'ole' Wizard with the gnarled staff?
simple...my friend allways took Dungeon ( ;Black dragons rule) Well none of us were particulary good at the game but 1 thing was ceartin : The addiction
Well I moved to antoher town and was desperattly looking for the game, but no luck
That's where I found the addiction for M&MVI <---- Was awsome, the way that a lvl 5 sorc ( with his other 3 partners) could walk ( almost ) up and face a dragon, that really got me hooked for over 1 year playing that same game over and over again ( LOOL, never could finish that darn Queen in the end )
But walking over those , sometimes cold naked plains ( I had a 19" screen ) and see the daylight turning into nighttime, making it much more dangerous to just 'toss' aroundThat and flying around, looking down on your possible opponants, and see a fireball being'loaded' and getting bigger and bigger and WAAM hitting your sorc and a big R.I.P sign under his/her name and the hmmm unplesant landing that was sooo cool! ( I must admit, I don't like lazerguns on a sorc.)
and I was really tired of that one could not play it online.
Then I, one day went online and searched under heroes and PING !! .....Well here I am
All for now!

Hehee UT

I bought HoMM3 before I even had a comp, lol. And when I finally got one it was with an AMD-K2 processor, where u had to delete a file to play the game. Took me along time before I found that out.
When I had finished the campaigns there, my girlfriend at the time bought M&M7 and we played that like maniacs, buying the 6 when we where done.
One day a friend off mine I had shown HoMM3, said look here, theres a great tournie going on on the net. That was early season 2 where u still needed to be vouched for by a veteran. My friend had been vouched for by Endor, so for some time we both played using his handle, Untill Jinxer one day asked why there where 2 ppl playing under the same name. Right about then TOH stopped using vouchers, and I finally got my own handle
But UT M&M6 is just great, I have finished it a couple off times, and I just love the fact that clerics and wizards can get both dark magic and light magic
I still have more troubles finishing that castle with beholders and liches than the last dngeon with that devil queen inside it.

is that game addictive?...

i asked my brother who had played this unusual game for 3 days straight. I had downloaded just about every Doom2 WAD from the net and played em all and was ripe for a new escape. He said it was addictive, i had a go at it, H2, and went crazy on it. I had a break in a contract, but didnt look for any work for another 2 months lol. I battled on the campaigns but kept getting stuck on the 10th ones for both the good and bad knights. Soon the other guy living with us got addicted as well, and one of his friends too. Went playing online about the time H3 came out, and went nuts again on the game. Been addicted ever since lol. Tried playing Tiberian sun and AOE2 but got sick of telling 50 little buggers where to go constantly. Fine if u want to be a primary school teacher or an Albanian goat herder, but not my gig. Bring on H4 i say...

Midnight, that was the funniest (and most accurate) definition of real-time strategy games I have ever heard!!! I played a fair amount of RTS (AoE 1&2, some Starcraft) between H2 and H3 but definitely I won't be returning to that, too much mouse-clicking for me...

Back to the topic, I'm not sure when it happened (early 1996?) but I sure remember a work colleague passing me 5 or 6 diskettes with a non-official copy of a weird game named HoMM...PC games were almost impossible to find in shops around here at that time...I almost dismissed it because I had no interest in RPG and its dungeons/dragons universe at all, but as I loved strategy games...Even if internet wasn't available either at that time, I still had a lot of fun playing it for a while.

But as of early 1997 I ordered my official HoMM2 from a US-based internet retailer, and got an internet account. The 1st online tournament I discovered was named Coliseum (any oldtimers remember it?), but it got closed shortly thereafter.

But the net friends I made there (games were arranged on a mirc channel or over icq) told me about new great leagues, not sure which came first, Oracle and VHC(Vesuvius Heroes Challenge?)...Since then, online HoMM has been a longlasting addiction.

I remember the Colliseum! Wow.  I had forgotten completely.  It was probably THE first online Heroes league and maybe in HOMM 1 too.

VHC

I remember. Vesuvius formed VHC to supply the demand for constant free challenge games (and also the downtime between Oracle tournaments).  Oracle did not have this format you remember, the matches were arranged over two week periods with maps and colors set in advance by random methods (Myk used to roll dice).  Myk and Ves formed an agreement whereby they would allow games from the other one's league to count in theirs.  Our dear Amazon King was a division champion in the Ultimate Championship.

My introduction to the series came with Kings Bounty on a Commodore 64, but though I enjoyed it and played it for a while, I wasn't hooked.  Then years later, I think 1998, I saw a package with KB and Homm I & II all together pretty cheap.  Since I was looking for something different to play around with I bought it.  I actually played Homm I for about a month before trying out II, played enough that I appreciated the enhancements.  Still not hooked though.

Finally, after having not played heroes for a while at all, I see the HOMM III compendium, and it brings back memories.  I had read some good reviews about it, it was cheap (notice a pattern here? ) so I bought it.  I played it for a long time, but was starting to get tired of it, when I found out how many user made maps were around.  This was the beginning of my getting hooked.

Still, even with all the new maps, I started playing other things more and more.  Then, getting stuck on one of the campaigns, I found the heroes community.  I ended up getting unstuck without any help from here, but got interested in the boards.  Finally, I could resist no longer, I had to try this multiplayer thing everyone was talking about.  I haven't been the same since.
