Sword of the Stars
As many of you did not know(while some did) during the months July-October I was without a workable Computer and could not play games on the PC anymore. During this time I horded up a stack of "games-I-want-to-play" and when I finally got a new PC around the end of October/beginning of November, I started playing them.
Now, here at the beginning of February, I have gotten down to the "Games-I've-never-heard-of-but-still-looks-cool" part of my gaming list and to my huge shock(and much delight) I found this excellent game which I am quite frankly surprised that I have not heard of it. Ladies and Gentlmen, I am talking about the very none-famous game(I assume) Sword of the Stars! Which might be the best game I've ever played(or at least in recent years)
The game is a space stratergy game that revolves around the holy 4Xs: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate! And is what I described((after having watched the tutorial movies)) as "Civilization IN SPACE!". I am not quite sure I can say that I was right, but I still lack a better description for it.
Now, have anyone here at HC ever heard of this game that was released back in 2006 or do I need to start bugging you about it until you start playing it???

I've looked into this and it seems right up my alley, I love 4x scifi fleet games. Isn't there a sequel coming out soon? I might hold off and pick that one up.

Yes, there is indeed a sequel coming up 
A sequel is scheduled to be released on the 2th of September 2011! Its going to have all the original six races from the original(+ expansions) PLUS we will have a brand new race: The Suul'Ka(If you read on some of the species you will no who these guys are)! So this is a game I am most definitly going to get!

Well, if you can vouch that it's good sci-fi space combat 4x, then I'm already sold. 
Should I wait for the sequel or try and pick up the original too?

I would vouch for this game yes. However I have not really played many space stratergy games of this type before so how it does compared to others like it I can't really say. However I find it a superb game and wish I could find some or Rorschach's tutorial movies(other than this Game Setup) so that you may get a real feel over how it would be(the tutorials give you a good impression of how it will be).
Whether or not you should get 1st one or 2nd one is completely up to you. I recommend the first one but if you got a life/stuff to do I might want to wait for second one.

The game is really good indeed, especially for people who like the Master of Orion genre.  The races are nicely made and pretty unique, the graphics are very good and there are real-time space battles - something which is rarely seen in the genre in question. It's not for people who don't like long games though - one standard Heroes session on a large map is several times shorter than an average SotS game, so...
And by the way this game has the most needlessly long intro ever. Just skip it, you won't miss anything.
