Training lessons ?

Hia all:-))
Dont flame me for opening this kinda thread ( Well that's not up to me is it !?
I have been thinking about this for awhile...( a faint 'LOL' is heard from a far, can UT really think? )
But many new players will not accept a challenge ( or atleast I think so) when they see a player with ex. 100/15..Thinking him/her is just WAAaaAAYyy outta my league!
But what if we were to equal that with some 'help' from you former Vet's ( you know who you are) by setting up some 'training lessons' i.e. A Vet plays a newbie ( with a carto edited in on the newbie's side, so the new player can learn from the Vet's move)
I know Myth ( Wiz ) had/has this in there tourney
I personally had some 'training lessons' ( me being the trainer,LOOL), but after those few lessons I saw an increased winning streak on that persons stats. Even vs. a few 'ole' timers
But overall i think that would equal the 'gab' from Recuit/footman status to baron's+. And making the whole game/TOH more 'open'.
I know such 'lessons' could be set up on a personal basis, but if we had a kinda schedule where Vet's signed up and newbs joined!
Also i think this would increase the overall gammin or should I say the friendly competition but furthermore also on a more 'personal' level Is this making sence ? I dunno but what the heck I thougt I might give it a shot...
ALSO, I know the season is comming to an end, but this could be a thing to forward to homm4 release!?

I think you got one thing wrong in my opinion.
It's the other way around.
It's not that newbies wont accept challenges, but it's the vets that wont accept cghallenges.
I had to learn my own strategies & leasrned some other strategies from other players.
Sure I would more pointers & practice games, for a player can never have enough weapons in a game.
The vets dont accept challenges, not in my opinion but by asking myself because
1oint value
2:cant trust a newbie of fear in cheating
3:stuck up players thinking that wins is everything
&4nly play who they know & pretty much rather have toh for them selves.
#3&4 are my opinions
#1&2 are facts.
Believe me, honest playing newbies would love a accept challenges & would love to learn from vets about any ideas they have.
Like me I just learned how very important chaining is from my last few games & will use it often.
Just one of many examples how vets can help other newcomers get better.

I think Aculias has it more on-target.  I'd love to play any of the vets around here, but my record doesn't exactly scream "great competition"!.
EDIT: But don't get me wrong, I'd love some training lessons!

Newbies would be helped a lot IMHO, if there was a way they could observe a game being played.  Maybe I should be putting this in the suggestion box for HOMM4?

oh yeah it has.. moc tried this about 2 years ago or was it a year ago? when he gave up toh for his site good plan good idea shame nobody cared enough to keep it goin for too long.

I am no game master but if somebody like i dunno.. attila asks me to help him it will take alot of convincing for me to agree. If its a total newbie that i never heard of i will explain why but not show them why. I still love seeing how does he afford 8 heroes and lvl 7's week 1 he must be cheating.

i had little dedication to the thought of this earlier and i have none now that heroes 4 is on the way Overall a good idea but very difficult to implement.(unless its ur friend)

An Idea

    What if a veteran/teacher hosted a 8 player game at a time designated by the vet.  The map would be edited so all was revealed.  The vet (red player) would explain what he was doing and why during his turn on day 1.  He could then watch the other players (7 newbies/students)and offer advise on what they should do.  This would go on through out week 1.  The vet could then save the game and tell the newbies when his second lesson would be.  It would be totally up to vet when he gives his lessons, once a week, once a day, when ever he/she wants to do it.  Lesson 2 he/she would teach week 2, lesson 3 he/she teaches week 3, and so on.
    Vets could post a thread somewhere, where people could "sign up" for these lessons.  In this thread he could describe his style of play.  This way a newbie who is more of a "might" kind of player, wouldn't get taught by a vet who is geared more towards "magic."  The same with rules and no-rules.
    If this is possible, 5 volunteer vets could teach 35 newbies.  The only donation needed would be 30 min to a hour of the vets time.  I know for some that is a lot of time, but it would be up to you how much time you spent on this.  If a newbie missed a lesson its his own fault.  Just state on your thread if you are willing to explain what happened if a lesson was missed.  Otherwise, he would have to get in touch with another newbie to find out.
    I don't know if this is what you were looking for, but it was just an idea I had.
    I would love to do this except I simply don't have the skills in this game, where I could teach it to somebody else.
    Last thing.  Thanks Uncoatedtitan, it good to know somebody thinks about stuff like this.

Why not just place a downloadable zip file with 3 weeks of savegames from two very strong players on the ToH homepage? Of course studying them requires some work fot the learning person, but on the other hand he or she has more time to reflect on what´s being done in the game and learn from it.

Well UT .. I think it's a great idea ... and I for one would certanly have benefitted a lot from such games.

And it would certainly decrease the gap between bets and newer players.

I'dd say go for it ... since there will also be a sub_tourney HOMM3 when HOMM4 gets out!@

I would delete this thread because as it seems were on our own, & i'm sure they learned their own strategy & if they did get help, well more power to them.
Sorry to sound this way but this is a cutt throat tournament where only the strong survives as it seems.

I agree with Aculias. I'm a newbie with 4 games and I think that a lot of improvment is done through memorization of a map. Sitting down at the computer going over some strategies until you figure out the best way to play a map. I never knew how effective a balista was with expert artillery and a hero with good attack stats until I looked over a map and happened to get Gurnisson (is that spelled right?) and stronghold. The only frustating thing, is I remember correctly, is that his specialty is Balista, but he doesn't come with a balista. That is kind of stupid. I heard someone say something about learning about hero chains that I figured out on my own like many other players in TOH. I don't think it would be fair to many players in TOH who took a long time and a lot of losses before they figured out how to use specific strategies.

An 8 player connection for ANY purpose is just about impossible and the time to play 1 game week would be awful!

I had an idea though...

Many of us have a Video card with a TV out plug now.
If some (good) players were to capture a sample game on tape for the well known maps and those players interested in learning could actually see the game in progress...

Well, it's possible to even have a ToH library of training games. Imagine... watching Moc play 7 Lakes or Sal or Flammy play any open map against another good heroes player!
Hell, I would watch it for entertainment!

Technology will allow this if you guys really want to do it!

Dude, be accurate if all you can do is put people down then get your facts straight.

We ran that site 3 yrs ago back when toh first launched and it had a ton of interest.

We shut it down because we were tired of all the work.

All you do is take shots at me and you cannot even pull off an accurate one.

I used to think you were intelligent but after your last month of taking shots at me which were almost all totally off base I wonder if you are just a lil man driven by rage.

Intelligence would at least know thy enemy before opening their stupid mouth.

hmm in my opponion people should learn the game by themselves. i think the idea is stupid
We all have diff. strategies. If the problems is that some newbie cant get a vet into game, well i suggest that newbie play opponents on his own rank and eventually study savegames/strategy of opponent (also a good chance of checking if opponent was cheating), untill he is strong enough to challenge the Vets.

When i was newbie, 3-4 years i learned the game (HOMM2) by loosing 10 games in a row to Endor. But then suddenly i surprised him and won a game

I like lews Idea, this way the motivated newbies could learn on their own or at least get some ideas.  I have seen the "teacher" think several times thru (wiz was also doing this more recently) and the trouble is the time it takes (not a biggie, but you could be playin another heroes game) and the biggest issue for me, is that it is all well and good, but this type of training cannont teach battle tactics (the most important imho) and you have a guy watching you live, but he is just asking you how in the heck can you attack that group with the little army your carrying around so teaching is not only what you do in the game but how you pull it off (i.e. waiting, spitting off single units to take retalliatory hits, ect.)

If I think anything that would be the most benficial in training is to just do what Zud said. Make a special map, with 2 heroes on it with pre-arranged numbers of creatures and spells, maybe a few arties. Then the 2 fighters go to battle and have a 30 min battle or however long it takes. Then during and after the battle the hero can explain how to attack a castle.(something I still do really poorly) This would really help people more than what each player is doing on their turn, because that can be figured out with the map editor open and playing the computer a few times trying different things to learn the best way to play a map. Zud's idea is something that I would support much more than the adventure map management, because a lot of the stuff that the experts do don't work as well, because they can attack with a really small army and lose almost nothing.

A suggestion for map could be the Tacticians Corner. Ive played it alot and ive played it many many times with archie. And i can promise you that i fight much better now then i did before we had those "training lessons" now i even manage to beat him on TC once in a while.
