Talisman board game and miniatures-want to paint!

I have the board game Talisman, 4th ed revised, and all of the current expansions. It is an adventure game which uses miniatures like tabletop gaming with armies and what not, except just as playing pieces. I am looking to learn how to and start painting them, and wanted to see if anyone knew much or anything about that. I am googling what to do, but someone I can ask questions directly of can help to make the process or how to a bit easier to understand.

For those who dont know what it is, Here it is.

Hubby played Warhammer and has plenty of miniatures from back then. He knows some techniques. I could ask him.

Would definitely appreciate. I am trying to get an understanding of not just good supplies, though I picked up some figures today to practice with, and a small number of colors to start with (red, blue, yellow, white, black, and a tarnished steel), as well as what seems to be a metallic gray primer. Though from what I have read, you are supposed to wash, cut away extra plastic/metal depending on the kind of figure, file down those parts to smooth, and then? Is primer next? If not, what? and I have heard some people for and against minwax polyshades, but dont those add color? being used as a sealer it sounds like. and then something else...

I am not trying to make anything to win competitions or anything remotely like that. Just trying to learn how to do a good job to make the figures look nice.

(And more easily tell the difference between the almost 40 characters in the game...
