Obvious imbalance?

Hey guys.

I got back into heroes 3 the other day and played with my family, looking back on it now it's still a great game and it was very fun but I noticed that the towns seemed heavily imbalanced.

It seemed castle and tower were undoubtedly stronger than for example fortress and inferno.

Anyone agree?

Edit: I changed around Stronghold with Fortress because I accidently got them confused.

Imo Tower is preety weak and Castle is just good. Stronghold is very strong and Inferno is also good if played well. However I belive there arent any big imbas in H3 (except flux but i dont even count it), also necro seems stronger than the others.

I think all te fun in this game comes from the fact that factions are imbalanced.
However, using same units and tactics may get boring after a while and it takes a lot of effort for mapmaker to overcome it.

LOL

OK. First - you have to become familiar with the templates for the random maps. If you dont know what it is - go look at the special threads about it.

If you dont play random map, but fixed map - well, you have to specify for what kind of map you are talking.

In general there are only 2 overpowerd towns - Necropolis and Conflux.

From the other 7 Castle is one of the good ones, it works well on almost all maps.

Then, depending on the type of map some towns are weak, others are strong. On fast and poor maps Rampart is the best. And Tower is maybe the worst.

On long and rich maps Inferno is one of the strongest towns because of the demon faming. If you dont know what it is - go read in the special threads.

Fortress and Stronghold are rather good towns in most of the maps. On some maps these 2 towns could be the best choise.

I dunno, I played a few games and they still seem weaker no matter what, Inferno seems to have pulled the short straw, they have the most pathetic line up in the game in my opinion, also they cost quite a bit, they have pretty average heroes, they're grail structure is poor, imps are weak and overpriced, and about demon farming, they're pretty slow and weak, and you normally get a very low amount, also inferno get pretty bad special buildings, also to top it off they can't sacrifice artifacts, plus they only have one weak shooter which damages their own units.

Fortress are a little better but still nothing special, they have one weak shooter, two weak fliers which get crushed if they advance, special buildings are okay, pretty much screwed when the enemy uses slow and also why do they only get up to mage guild level 3? they're weak enough as it is, I think the only redeemable feature about them is mighty gorgons.

Fortress is great because even on poor maps u can still have wyverns day 2-3 and capture almost every nearby mine without loses, beastmasters are also superb (never choose witch, i'd go Tazar most of the times), they have high chance of water magic (teleport, mass bless), hydras are also great, MM pwn every 7th level except ghost dragons...
Inferno is great, Demoniacs are nice (i'd go Marius), gogs/imps = food for pit lords = more demons, cerberus is great 3rd level, demons arent very good but u can have A LOT of them, pit lords are average but they can rise demons, efreets are great and devils are AWESOME with huge speed and no retaliation = 1 devils pwns 999999999 golems

You are beyond help.

The only advise i can give you - enjoy the game and dont think about the competitive side of it.

I know what you mean, but it sucks to play and know that some towns are like double as good as other ones, ruins the fun.

For example I can win every game by going Tower and choosing Cyra, upgrading goblins day 1, then recruiting a bunch of heroes and giving them all to Cyra, she has diplomacy so she can rush immediately and have units join her on the way to the enemies base, by time she gets there she's got a massive army and the other player stands no chance.

See what I mean?

I saw everything.

And you may try playing without diplomacy. You may find it more chalenging.

But diplomacy is awesome

Also I keep trying to give the other towns a chance, but their just bad, sorry.

By the way Tower isn't slow, it's slow to build up but if you just run around with diplomacy it's the fastest.

Play as you like, Heroes is fun without limitations. Diplomacy heros are the best in the game, if you enjoy overpower and fast win. Some factions are a bit weaker than others on normal medium maps, but should re-balance on bigger maps. Once you will be bored by joining everything around, eventually you will discover other strategies and find out the unique power of each faction.

The competitive play is not the unique way to enjoy a game, and templates are not the only fun maps neither.

gammacra,

try a map with 8 different factions. Finish it with faction 1, then retry it with faction 2, etc...

I actualy finished the scenario fastest with Inferno town (for which I always had low regard), and slowest with Fortress town (which I love for the music, environment and cool looking beasts). I have realised that this happened for two reasons:

I - skill and artifact availability were a real "luck" factor for Inferno in that case;
II - an almost unstoppable Necro hero when I played Fortress (most Fortress troop abilities are null x Necros - except Basiliks can petrify undead);

Other things play a role - if you get that offense Barbarian to lead Inferno or Loynis (the Prayer specialty one) to lead your Fortress. (Orrin for Tower ) There are simply too many combinations.

The 'correct thing', if you have the patience, would be to do this playing each town type 3 times, e.g., and have a feel for it.

I always had the feeling that Castle towns were the strongest, as all 4 upper troops were great on their own. Plus some of the best heroes.

EDIT: about diplomacy, wouldn't setting monsters as unlikely to join make it harder to have t hem do so? Meaning, you'd have to be probably Expert and high level / much stronger troops?
