Poll Question:
Quest Start

In my idea for Hall of Decision, I only used 2 starting options as either; Might or Magic. The Quest would tree-out from that first fork in the road. But, as Q said it is old stuff. Three paths e.g. Fighter, Warrior and Rogue is not new.

What would you like to see between these possible "Starts"

All cool ideas ... Now its a vote between them but as I found all of them interesting and it whould be cool to have to all of them but in a randomized fashion. That whould perhaps be better so you dont always get the resistance you expect.

Personally, I think that the skills your hero specializes in and the choices he/ she makes (to do side quests or not or other such things) would impact the end result, as their personality would probably be linked to the skills they have. (Stereotypical knight would have leadership(Noble), attack (violent) and defense (protective)). Because of how these traits interact, your hero will change the world differently and fight for a different cause than, say, a demon lord or mad man.

Just something that It thought would be interesting.

Thanks Gnomes for the response.

I cannot say where this will go but I like this idea. Although, personality may be a bit of a reach (in H5), regardless, as good ideas always do; they spark other ideas.

A way that this could be sort of implemented; is if the "acquired skills" (I think a part of your idea) played a part in what "path" or trail of the Quest is set before you. e.g. "Sorcery" could create a path loaded with Magic. "Leadership" a loyalty dilemma where a rebellion has to be quelled. etc.

The accepted side-quests could work well,  but <imo> there would have had to been a lot of previous planning (game/maps)to pull it off.

1. A single Quest
One Quest that all play. Many branches for variety so it can play differently.

2. Might vs Magic
More of the "old feud", You pick your side and while going though the tree of possibilties, the other side comes at you at times with some some of story line and armies

3.This & That & Combo Heroes
Same thing as 2 but three non-amigos and of course a balanced Hero to play.

4.Skill @ games-end...determines quest
Say 30 levels = 30 progressive Quests.

5.Skill does not matter, Random Quest
Any of the above can pop-up when entering the Hall of Decision.

Suddenly, I'm thinking of all the work that will go into this idea... and how I couldn't help in the slightest as my editor is broken.

But still, I'd love to see a game where your decisions can drastically alter the ending, even ending in a way that no one expected. And it does seem that more votes have been given...

Me too. Even though this is not an RPG where it would be easier to fulfill the idea, it still could be done in a fashion(like you thought)along the line Hero skills and abilities.

You're right about the most votes leaning towards experience. But, few are voting. I am surprised at so little input.  Folks are going on and on about a game they cannot impact and have nothing to share with one they can? I don't get it. If I were going to guess I would imagine 500 votes would probably work out that way but it would have been nice to not guess

Since you're on the phone what do you think of this?

I think "every level" would be too much to do, but maybe every 5th for starters?
e.g.
1. Quest length and difficulty ramp up at these stages; levels 5,10,15 etc.
2. If you are in between (most often will be) at entering the hall
at levels 11 or 12 you bop-down to the 2nd tier quest(10) and at levels 13 or 14 bop-up to 3rd-tier(15) The same on up the scale.

In this idea, there would usually only need to be 4 quests since I doubt many players get past level 20? I pretty much have to play one of my long-winded custom maps to see my traits ever near level 25 and even then abilities are not all filled out.

That's one of my big gripes with H5; here there are all of these diverse "abilities" and I hardly ever see the list near filled out. I hate to be the broken-record but H3 had this right. I remember seeing "you level up" (words to that effect) because all had been filled-out long ago. I remember slugging it out with a level 42 A.I. Hero in a "Earth Elemental duel" for like half-and hour and nearly lost.(insane mana)

I wonder what would be a normal spot that most players see, Level 15? <imo>That would make it mandatory that anything done according to levels would have to play off of "skills", since that usually rules the decisions early-on.

Another idea that seems really awesome about this approach is the quest being geared toward the class of Hero you chose at the start of the game. That would make attaining levels unneeded with a preset story/quest geared for each faction hero-type. But, that's the lot of work you mentioned.

And that reminds me...reinstall the game so your Editor works

I have a broken editor only, so I need to re-download that...

Back to the game! If we are talking about a kind of quest thing here, I would think that only certain skills would effect your path, based on your class (ie, knights really wouldn't change if they got sorcery, they are still rather hacky-slashy). So at the end of each "Mission", "level", whatever you  want to call it, based on certain skills, you get to chose certain levels to complete.

Example: Knight chooses dark magic, attack and leadership. At the end of the level, he has the option of doing the "Normal" campaign or walking down a path of darkness and destruction where he overthrows the king. Later that level, he gains light magic and tries to reverse what he created in the next quest and bring the world back to order. (Not saying that the people would forgive you, in fact this line would almost certainly end in your death through assassination, rebellion or an execution, but it is a quest line. Not all heroes live.)

In a different game, the same knight chooses light, attack and leadership, and has the option of doing the "Normal" quest line (open to everyone) or taking the battle into hell (or wherever) to duke it out with the demons and end their threat once and for all. Later, he gains defense and has the option of pulling back to protect his troops from annihilation at the hands of the demons. (You're attacking hell... no army will win. You have the choice of continuing, though, but your hero will most certainly die.)

Just a (really freakin complicated) thought.

About the levels, if this is a campaign thing, then I usually get to lvl 29+ with my main heroes, and if I only have 1 hero, then I'm at lvl 33+ at the end game. If this is just a play-through one mission lvl, then I'm usually at lvl 25-29.

What map are you playing? You always end games at these levels?

OH DEAR GOD!!!!! Do you know what kind of hell you will put yourself through man?!?! My idea of linked missions was bad enough, but the amount of triggers that your one mission would require... *shudders*

Unless it is a very small map, yes. I usually play medium-large maps and zerg with a dungeon hero + enlightenment, so I level rather quickly...

hmmm, zerg? = Starcraft?

I've been imagining a HoMM Hero quest related to E.E.'s Hall of Decision.

The Zerg Rush. The early game rush where you don't care about losses, just butchering everything close by. But anyway...

One long level is allot to program for, and doesn't flow as well (in my eye) as a short series of levels. If you could get it to work, then great! I'll make creature and hero scripts (as in, what they say to one another) and send that at least to you and I'll collaborate, but it will be difficult to get the right feel.

Would it be helpful if I took a series of screens of the Hall since your Editor is kaput atm?

I think I will just do that. Maybe there are folks that would like to see the Hall and might even contribute but don't care for the Editor at all.

Anyway Gnomes, I know you have a great imagination. As we develop the Quest (whatever it becomes) can I count on you to brain-storm/mind-sprinkle (I'm the latter) ideas, offer opinions etc.?

Question. I've only share single pics thus far.

Can I share a "folder" of pictures at a media-share site that once D/L'd will be viewable as slide-show or by whatever default viewer?

You can load the Hall of Decision map in the game proper, single player mode. You should be able to see everything from there.

I didn't do the pics. Just load it up in the game. I had been in the Editor so long that I had forgot Q had asked me to make it playable. When you said your Editor crashed, my brain was covered by a thick fog.

The map is a "Tour" of the Hall of Decision.

You'll have 3 Wizards to follow the signs.
