Not that used to H4

Could someone explain how speed, morale and luck in this game work? What's max luck and max morale? Also, in armies, are the movement speeds averaged to determine the speed of the stack?

And what are the best heroes? Which classes, and how should they be built? Thanks

Movement is how further can a unit move while speed is how fast does a unit get their turn.

So you have a global battle turn consisting of three phases: morale, normal and despair and their wait phases.

First is the morale phase where only the creatures that got morale get their turns according to the highest speed.

Second is normal phase where only the the creatures that didn't get morale or sorrow get a turn by highest speed.

Third is despair phase where only creatures that got negative morale get their turns based on higher speed.

Fourth is despair wait phase with the creatures with negative morale based on lowest speed.

Fifth is a normal wait phase with creatures that got no morale or sorrow and act by lowest speed.

Sixth is a morale wait phase where only creatures that got positive morale get turns based on lowest speed.

Positive morale enables you to get your turn faster than others and gives 10% bonus damage.

Positive luck enables you to deny 1/3 (or 2/3 not sure precisely of incoming damage. Note that damage from some spells cannot be denied.

There is only one speed for every stack, there is no average.
If you think about map movement, there are some cases where you can gain a few points of movement if you combine stacks but generally you cannot move a unit further than it's movement no matter how many transfers you make.

Max morale and max luck can be 10, a stack having 5 morale means 50% to get positive morale every turn, morale can be changed by spells in battle or visiting buildings and developing leadership outside of battle.

Thanks. So with maximum morale, your whole army will always act before an opposing army with 0 morale does?

Do stacks of multiple creatures with different movement always move as slowly as the slowest stack?

If your whole army has max morale it will always go first, assuming the opponent is not also getting good morale. To my understanding, each point in morale gives you 10% chance of getting good morale, with 10 giving 100%. Likewise negative morale gives a 10% chance per point for bad morale. Keep in mind that the morale of a stack changes as combat progresses; if you are losing a lot of troops, it will go down for the rest of combat, if you are slaughtering the enemy, it will go up.

Luck works on a similar 10% per point basis (to my understanding). Luck does not change during battle unless it is affected by the appropriate spells. The luck chance is calculated when you are attacked (or rather, hit). If you are "lucky" you receive reduced damage, if unlucky, it is increased. I believe it is 50% damage for good luck and 200% for bad, but I could be wrong. Luck applies to all direct damage, single target spells too. (I'm not sure about fireballs and such off the top of my head.) But anyway, mass misfortune is VERY good.

Movement in the adventure map is determined by the slowest unit in the army. Note that if the hero is slower than the fastest creature, it's movement will be increased to match it. The movement of each creature stack is calculated individually rather than the army as a whole, but the army stops once any creature stack runs out of movement.

If you think about map movement, you move as much as the slowest unit can. If you have black dragon with 40 movement, genie with 30 and skeletons with 18 then you move 18 on map.
Of course this is in case you don't have any bonuses or pathfinding skill.
