I actually picked up an used copy of the limited edition of Dark Souls.

It took a bit of effort to figure out the basic food chain at first, but I think I got over the initial curve and I find my self enjoying the game quite a bit. With a bit of effort I of course mean trial and error. It's not really as savage as some might make it out to be, but getting beaten up and losing your money is kinda something you'll need to adapt to.

Besides the silly opening movie, I kind of like the game setting albeit quite grey in tone. The dry bits of humor here and there do strike a chord with me.

The main thing I don't like about the game is the sheer stupidity of some of the gameplay mechanics.  My biggest gripe is death.  When you die, the entire world resets (except bosses), yet my armor and weapons continue to degrade, pickups disappear, and curses somehow persist after death.  That doesn't make any sense seeing as how everything else resets.

While I do appreciate a challenge, I do not appreciate tedium, which Dark Souls is 100% guilty of being.  The only more tedious game I can think of is BIT.TRIP.RUNNER.  How anybody can play that game for "fun" is beyond my grasp.

Yes it's like they purposely sacrifice internal consistency of gameplay mechanics just so they can call it 'harder'.  It's that kind of thing that drives me nuts, and yet the fanboys will chew your head off if you call the game cheap.

You are incorrect about that tho.
what resets on death
1: Standard monsters
2: flasks
3: spells
4: *bloodstain

*bloodstain contains your lost souls/humanity and gets replaced by a new one in case of new death.

Things that stay the same uppon death
1: Picked up items / weapons / armor/
2: special souls
3: unlocked shortcuts / bonfires / certain traps
4: Slain special enemies / npcs
5: *souls / humanity

* aslong as you pick them up before dying again.

Especially with the increased soul drops you can easily repair your broken equipment. The game is like any other checkpoint based game with the exeption of potentialy rewarding you with your spoils of failed attempts to reach the next checkpoint. basicly rewarding you every time you progress.

About powergaming trough it.
I myself took a few long breaks due to some much needed patches. Defeating the final boss once should be an easy feat. getting the platinum might take some more efford, due to the game being verry punnishing on missing missables and some boring farming. none of wich as tedious as pure bladestones on demonsouls tho.

Omega Attempts to Review Dark Souls

Recently I picked Dark Souls back up.  Since the 1.05 patch, I find the game to be much more enjoyable.  Therefore, I shall attempt a small review of the game.  I tested the Xbox 360 version and I do not play online.  Obviously, I'm not a reviewer and won't cover everything.

I'm essentially a slow-moving death machine.  I wear very heavy armor, carry one of the heaviest shields and axes in the game, and look silly trying to dodge attacks.  I have slow attacks but generally kill everything (other than bosses) in 1 or 2 hits.  I'm about 60-70% through the game.

Story

Despite what the fanboys over at GameFAQs may say, there really isn't much of a story to Dark Souls.  Essentially the world sucked and was ruled by dragons.  Then there was fire and the world sucked less.  Four powerful champions rose up to kill the dragons.  The fire started to wane so one of the champions used his soul to relight it and cursed humanity in the process to eventually become undead.  You now play as a chosen undead on a quest to relight the fire AGAIN in the land of undead and make the world suck less.

That's it.  You get some exposition from various NPCs and items you find in the game, but the story isn't very deep.

Audio

The sound effects in the game are good.  Swords clang and armor clinks.  There's really nothing in the game that stands out but I don't really get caught up on sound effects.  As to music, there is not much of it and what there is, is not stellar.  It's mostly gloomy which fits.

Graphics

The game has very good graphics but it does suffer frame-rate issues.  At certain points, the game will come to a crawl due to poor coding. I don't really have much more to say about this.

Gameplay

Everything in the game is based around souls.  Need to buy a sword?  Give someone 1,000 souls.  Want to level-up your faith?  10k souls.  Upgrade equipment?  Souls.  Pretty much everything you do will require souls.  Souls can be found in items or farmed from enemies.  One vexing aspect of the game is that upon death, you lose all of your held souls.  Upon resurrecting, you have one chance to reclaim your accumulated souls.  If you die before that, you lose everything.  It's cheap but admittedly, it is more than most games give you.

Dark Souls is a punishing game and downright unfair at times.  Your character can't endlessly swing a sword without getting tired, which is a nice touch.  Getting hit by an attack can stagger your character and reduce your stamina.  The game demands patience and precision.  One misjudged attack can often spell your doom.  You get standard and heavy attacks, 2-handed attacks, shield bashes, running attacks, parries, and ripostes.  Sometimes it's better to risk a heavy 2-handed attack and other times it's better to parry and riposte.  It depends on what you feel comfortable with.

Learning how to use your equipped weapon effectively is imperative.  Enemies have a pattern and once learned, aren't too terrible to deal with.  Be forewarned, however, that many enemies have cheap attacks that either can't be blocked or inflict some ridiculous condition on you.  These range from bleeding (kiss a massive chunk of your health goodbye), being poisoned or super-poisoned (toxic), and being cursed (Lose 1/2 health and remain cursed until cured.  Persists after death).  Luckily, most of the conditions can be cured and most enemies have tells for when you are going to get hit with a condition.   For really frustrating enemies, various NPCs can be summoned to help you, which can be of great assistance.  Online players can be summoned as well.

There are dozens of different weapons, armor sets, and miscellaneous items in the game to accommodate various playstyles, which is a huge plus.  If you want to be a tank, snag some heavy armor and great club.  If you prefer an agile warrior, pick up some bandit clothing and a spear.  Want to be a mage-warrior walking around in full plate mail while casting fireballs?  You can.  Gear has weight and you will be affected if you have really heavy items equipped.  For example, my hero wears black iron plate armor, a massive tower shield, and a gigantic axe.  He can take a beating but dodging is pretty much out of the question.

You get access to magic in the game, which is very useful.  You only get so many castings before needing to rest, so you have to be judicious when casting.  I mostly stick with healing spells but you can have access to various augmentations, defensive, and offensive spells.

Replayability

Now, this is just going off of what I've read.  I have not beaten the game so I have not tried it.

Upon completion of the game, you can restart with your current character, equipment, stats, and most items in NG mode.  On the second playthrough, everything gets a lot harder and is worth more souls.  Mooks in the beginning of the game can be a serious threat to your character upon a second playthrough.  As I understand it, NG can go up to NG+++++++.  After that, it stops.

If you are looking to get value out of your game, that is something to consider.

Online

As stated above, I didn't bother.  I don't have Xbox Live Gold so I cannot play online.  I know if you are connected, you can aide other players or attack them for various rewards.  If online is important to you, I advise reading one of the various Dark Soul wikis to see what's offered.

From what I've gleamed, the online community is still active.  Be forewarned, there are a lot of glitches, gankers, lag-kills, and other issues.  Apparently the PC is the worst of the lot due to modification.

Overall

Despite my earlier griping, I'd give it an 8/10.  The game has a steep learning curve and once you have the basics down, it's a fun game.  The game continuously challenges you with new enemies and dangerous environments.  The graphics are nice to look at despite the snags.  The audio is functional.  If you are looking for a deep and interesting story, I would look elsewhere.  All and all, a solid game.

I'm having an extremely fun time, I've neglected almost all my real life duties for the past 3-4 days, I have not bathed nor shaved, sleep deprivation et cetera. The game from hindsight by right shouldn't be worth this attention, but something about this game is compelling, the combat is solid and the variations such as parry and riposte are difficult to pull off due to the difference between creep attacks, but highly rewarded.

Still, combat alone rarely carries a game for me, a game has to have story to drive me to do anything, and I think this game succeeds, very well in fact. There is no "conventional" story here, you aren't handed the story on a silver platter like in almost every other game, you have to discover it yourself, which is really engaging for me and inspired me to read histories and such. I like a game that let's go of your hand, and despite there being little repercussions for "evil" deeds I still can't bring myself to commit them.

Like one of the HC members said (in another game) That they were robbing a house but left the money because of a note that said that the money was this guy's savings so that he can leave. (close enough imo) This is the way Dark Souls makes me feel, that it's really my adventure.

Grinding, now most of my time was burned away at grinding, I thought that I killed off my love for MMoRPGs years ago. Dark souls succeeds in bringing some of those feels back, like grinding and constantly reminding you that others are playing the game through runes and ratings as well as the blood pools (where you can see where others have died)

This game promotes thinking on your feet and sizing up opponents and their capabilities then using it to destroy them, a very thrilling experience indeed.

There's no single player / multiplayer switch in Dark Souls 2 whatsoever.
Basically as long as you have internet you will be in Multiplayer.
In order to be totally offline you need to either starts the game in offline mode (if you can, on steam). Unplugging your internet when you start the game might work too, not too sure about that one.

If you don't want to totally disable all the multiplayer aspects but just mitigate the risk of invasion you don't have to worry much in the beginning because there aren't any pvp area right at the start and the risk of being invaded is very low. You can also burn human effigies (as opposed to use it) to prevent invasions.

Dagoth and Snack know a lot more on the subject though, the only thing I know is starting it in offline mode should do the trick just fine.

Yes, you can just play in offline mode. And the servers often crap themselves. The sequel has barely any PVP in your first play. There is some rat nonsense (a player of the rat covenant (actual name, I swear to god) can summon you to his booby-trap filled world and kill you there. You don't lose anything, but it's super annoying.) Otherwise, I haven't been invaded once in dark souls 2

Haven't fully read the thread, but me and snack have this ideological war about this game's sequel. Corribus, if you're looking to play the original dark souls, you have my blessing. Windows Live has been discontnued though, so supposedly it requires some fiddling to get it the original dark souls to work.

EITHER WAY, HOW TO PLAY DS WITHOUT PVP:
DS1: DON'T USE HUMANITIES UNLESS YOU REALLY NEED TO, BUT DS1 IS DED ANYWAY, SO DON'T EXPECT TOO MANY INVASIONS.
DS2: THERE'S 4 AREAS WITH A LOT OF PVP. OUTSIDE OF THAT, EXPECT NO PVP UNTIL AFTER HAVING FINISHED THE GAME ONCE.

ALTERNATIVELY:
GO IN OFFLIE MODE. THERE ARE SOME NPC INVASIONS, BUT THEY'RE COOL.
