strange idea

Has anyone thought about writing a mod/patch which can increase the number of players in a game of H3 over 8? Sometimes I think me vs. 20-30 AI would be amusing

is this even feasible? I am not a good programmer, so I would not know.

It would be feasible. Allowing so low as 10 players at once is really a benefit. I suppose it's almost impossible even in ERA, and even with all those ERA brains. But in VCMI implementing such feature shouldn't be hard since all its code is open and almost all well written. But VCMI is far from complete, and VCMI are mostly programmers, so if you want them to include that feature, you have to do yourself or find people which will do: flag graphics including emblem motive, color pallette for each new player (it makes some parts of interface fits player color without the need to do separate graphics for each player) and several other graphics. Also there is a problem that original editor supports only up to 8 players, and if you talk to person who made MapEdPatch he may answer that some features of 9th player aren't possible for him without breaking map format (so whenever ERA plugin or VCMI feature you need newer map format which is "large" enough to make all players fit). Note that VCMI haven't its own map editor yet nor own map format (but is compatible with all wog maps in terms of map format), and the last hope for even testing the feature if it work is buried since there aren't any parts of random map generator inside VCMI.

Summary: adding more max players in VCMI is easy, in ERA is really hard but at least partially possible. However even if anybody prepare the feature in ERA or VCMI, there have to be a way to place 9th player on map to test if anything works. (well for ERA it's easier just make a map which includes a script to change owner of objects, and places additional heroes on map, but VCMI even doesn't support ERM scripts yet)

Already AI is a source of problems, adding more will increase the fragility. And is a matter of environment size too, on regular maps 8 AI are more than enough if all heroes slots used. Strange idea indeed.

This has already been proposed on VCMi board a long time ago. May help with custom maps that utilize lots of enemy heroes.

This, or rising / removing limit of heroes allowed for player. It can apply to AI only, I hope.

Heroes 4 had an iteresting feature of neutral mobile armies, including neutral heroes. Helped a lot with scenario design, so additional players would fit there as well.

There is however trouble with graphics - not only flags, but also thieve's guild, hotseat window and more. Also, original map format doesn't support it, as Majaczek mentioned.
Still, it's an optional feature on our TODO list, if someone feels like doing it - just try.

I don't see why AI should be a source of problems... certainly not in the future

Why would we need 20 players when we can bring same hero x times back in game as long as his faction still alive.

@AI is a problem right now, I don't know about future. Actually Heroes is very unstable game, I don't know a single map where we can be 100% sure to finish safe. Between overflows, AI freezes and battle clone bugs, a head ache.

Well, Sal, we've already run into this issue before. There are times when it'd be nice to have additional faction colors for stationary heroes on larger maps.  But it's a limit that's generally easy to work around.

Corr, if they make patch for having 15 AI, you will then ask for a 16th to do that.

What I mean is that you can use 7 factions for game play and 1 for stationary heroes.

Hm larger map fits better, for example, 512. The maximum would be 16 players. Settlers game works fine. 6 player is really enough!

Settlers are (were) real time strategy. Been there, done that.

I can imagine we'd like to see a separate player for every town type avaliable in game, which is already 9 and most likely this number will only grow now. Mapmakers tend to put fixed towns in fixed enviroment for specific player, and this way they need to discard one faction at least.
