Leveling pace
I've been playing some Homm4 at lan lately (with equilibris, ofc) and got kinda annoyed about the leveling pace... I mean, come on, there's just so many skills, spells... and it takes forever to even get to a grandmaster at a single skill tree. I guess they gave us five just as a tease
I'd sort of prefer to level up faster.. you know, so my barbarian can actually learn combat and tactics and not just be stuck at having both poorly developed until game ends

Thats the boosters of magic or non-magic abilities are for.
If you would get enough abilities without them, poorer the game will be,I think!

But 100 skill slots keep things interesting even on most epic maps, where you can level up almost idefinitelly. There will never be a point whene "I have maxed hero and can do everything". There's always a place for improvement.

Anyone willing to direct me to epic maps where I can get 2-3 skill trees at least?

Have you tried some of these? Or these? Full reviews here.
In my opinion, H4 shines in multiplayer on S and M maps and in singleplayer on L and XL maps.
In multiplayer I'd focus on getting your starting skill to GM and ignore other skills, including the fourth slot (e.g. Tactics and Leadership). There are exceptions, of course; you might want to go for GM Necromancy for example.
Finally, try to capitalize on one of H4's strongest points: multiple heroes.

@Vlaad, I'll check those, thanks. On multiple heroes, doesn't it slow down GM even further? I always play with a single hero in MP

It depends on the map, but you should be able to cover more ground and fight more neutrals with multiple heroes.

it's easier to get several skills at gm with several heroes than with only one. since you need less XP to level up at the lowest levels. it's also better to have several heroes mastering several magics instead of one super hero, since you can cast more spells per turn.

well, no wonder I suck at this game
I kinda thought getting GM something (like, say, your prime magic school) + GM combat is the way. Since GM combat makes you durable enough to cast spells I remember how my friend simply fragged my caster with water elementals' icebolt in the first turn. ouch. I wished for GM spell resistance back then
Perhaps a general+2 mages would be a better strategy?
Also, please, post the best maps (XL type) if you can.

You may like the map "Against all odds" where when you have a castle underground you receive every week some level 4 monster for your army.
Or to have fun with the "Four Halflings of Apocalypse".
If you try "The world is not enough"-be sure to find a way to give army to your opponent.I mean in the map your main opponent cant explore and fight in order you to face him in battle as you expect.

I rarely had combat on my casters, I thought you needed too many level ups. I relied mostly on spells. well, water elemental are a problem since it's hard to prevent them from casting ice bolt, unless you kill them before. but if enemies can't reach you, you don't need combat.

I think it's not only the best H4 map, but the very best Heroes map ever. Passed it many times and even worked on improved hardcore version.
How do you deal with the AI having a Legion of Angels? And scores of super catapults in the 3rd order town? This was fun for awhile but looks hopeless now.
