So I heard gas is expensive in US

One of my friends from America told me that he's absolutely annoyed with the latest gas prices, which are "outrageous". So I checked. 3,4 $ for a gallon. Then I calculated how much the one right across the street I live on charges for fuel. 7,02 $ per gallon.

So, dear American friends, if prices annoy you, instead of getting annoyed about "outrageous" prices, think how cool it is to not live in Poland, where you earn 600$ per month and the gallon costs over 7 dollars

Considering that prices were about $1.80/gal four years ago, it's pretty bad.  Plus a much greater proportion of people in US, I suspect, require cars for commuting.

That would be true if we didn't have one of the worst traffic jams Europe has in Warsaw

That kinda puzzles me - with people here poor (compared to West Europe and US), and gas 2x more expensive than American gas - and bad infrastructure, roads with tons of holes, terrible drivers and VERY cheap public communication - why do people insist on sitting 2hours per day in a traffic jam when you can take a tram and get to your destination in 12 minutes tops (paying 80$ per month for an unlimited access to all public transportation means?)

I guess there's still a judge a man's worth by the size of his car post-soviet mentality here.

US is huge and most people live in houses. Getting a car there, with them being rich and gas cheap, seems mandatory.

But here? Why? What for?

80$ for public transports, that is crazy! Here it is 20$.  For your question, I have same dilemma. I never drove a car and I will never have one. It puzzles me to see my neighbors taking their car and go buy bread 500 meters down on the street then back. Maybe some social independence symbol, dunno.

20$? holy. You mean, a monthly ticket is only 20$?

And here I thought we're actually having something done decently. Oh well.

EDIT: oh wait, I've made a stupid mistake. The 80$ one is for three months. lol Still, French is cheaper...

Think about Dollar inflation, crappy economy and so on. We could assume that such "Increase" in prices is illogical for 4 years.

Well, as I said, due to a stupid mistake, I typed in the price of a three-month ticket. Monthly one is something along the lines of 30$

A lot of my friends struggle to pay for their cars. They usually live in flats, having not more than 15-20mins of tram/metro ride to get to city centre. Which costs next to nothing compared to cars. And no traffic jams, too, so you're there 2-3 times as fast. And people still insist on sitting there in those jams. Damn. If that's luxury, I'm pretty happy I can't afford it

Polish public transport really is awesome. But then, Poland (and the Polish) in general is awesome, so it's hardly surprising.

Hey, at least I am voicing my opinion. Sorry about that though. I really think poland is not that special, of course you might have different feelings for Poland.

At first I thought that prices are too high in Poland but after I calculated them, it seems in Bulgaria are the prety same though the salaries are lower. Here it is.

Gas (benzine) and diesel:
gas 98 octanes - $7.19/gal
gas 95 octanes - $6.81/gal
diesel - $6.93/gal

The public transport in Sofia:
Single ticket - $0.67
Monthly ticket (regular) - $34.66 (All lines + subway)
Monthly ticket (students) - $11.33 (All lines + subway)
Monthly ticket (PhD students) - $23.33 (All lines + subway)
There are some other ticket types for one or two lines but I'm not quite sure about the prizes. Also there are some preferences for old people (retirees).

Salaries:
minimum wage $187 per month
avarage wage $400 per month

EDIT
@Doomforge, is there an excise on the fuels in Poland because here the excises are one of the reasons for the high prices.

Around 66% here is tax, no major changes there.
Price has doubled in the last 12 or so years.
