Game lags when not in 800x600
This is Winds of War. When I set the resolution to anything higher than 800x600, the game lags horribly on the adventure map screen (the town and battle screens are fine). My computer can run H5 at 1920x1080 just fine, so it's clearly powerful enough for H4. What can I do to fix it?

I've never had problems like lagging with this game, although the animations are a bit funny on the battle screen.

For some reason, if I uncheck full screen while the game is at 1280x1024, it still displays fullscreen.

If I switch to 1280x1024, it becomes full-screen again. Even though my desktop is at 1920x1080.

Doesn't work. Also, when I do windowed mode in 1024x768 or 800x680, the game runs very, very slowly.

Clean winds of war should work fine on any windows. Did you install normal H4, Gathering Storm then Winds of War, or did you install some patches in between? If you have clean H4 complete that should work fine too.
Also do you have the newest graphic drivers? There are rare cases in which ati cards perform slow on older games ...
If the problem persists on only one resolution setting it's most likely a graphic issue, check your graphic settings in windows too.
The only serious lags from time to time I have experienced only in normal H4 on newer computers but they were related to memory etc they were memory holes. Your problem doesn't seem to be from time to time but continual ...

It's a clean install, first vanilla, then TGS, then WOW. I have the latest Nvidia drivers, too. 800x600 works fine fullscreen, but nothing else does. 800x600 and 1024x768 windowed lag horribly. 1024x768 and 1280x1024 fullscreen lag horribly. 1280x1024 can't be windowed, when I uncheck "Full Screen" it's still fullscreen, even though my desktop resolution is 1920x1080.

Try to search the web for possible problems with your graphic card for certain games ... I have 9600GT and H4-WoW has never lagged for me, I too have the newest nvidia drivers.
If you say that only 800x600 doesn't have problems I suppose it's a graphic issue, but otherwise I would've suspected the hard drive ...
Does the game when in 800x600 in fullscreen run slow or lags if you have other programs in the background like web browsers and such?
One more thing, how much free space do you have on your drives? You should have about 5 GB or more free space for your virtual ram.

I solved it. After doing some Googling, I discovered that turning off Adventure Map animations fixes it. It runs fine in 1280x1024 now, though it looks worse because objects on the adventure map aren't animated anymore.

I tried a little search and failed, could you tell me how you did disable the object animations? I know that you can do that in the campaign editor but in-game I have no idea.

You may edit registry entries. Use regedit and go to (at least that's where it is on my win7) Quote: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic IV
Find entry adventure_animations and change its value from 1 to 0.

You can do it in-game, in the same screen where you change the resolution.

A final footnote to this issue: I built a new computer, with an Nvidia GTX 770, and installed HoMM 4 on it. I can play it at 1280x1024 with animations turned on, without any lag. So I don't know what it didn't like about my laptop.
