Hello -- I'm back, with starting questions.

I've been gone from HOMM for a while now.  I've been playing M&M and HOMM for a *very* long time.  HOMM5 lasted me for over a year before I ran out of player generated maps worth playing.  I tried to download and play the trial version of HOMM6 as soon as it came out, but it said my graphics card was not good enough.  SO, I went to play the D&D anthology (BG1-2, etc. up to Planescape Torment).

Now I have a new computer with a bigger better graphics card, and so bought the game off of Amazon.

Of course I have questions, and a few comments.
This was my favorite forum for HOMM before, and from just skimming the posts, I'm sure it will be again.  I have gotten the manual from the CD (not worth very much) and the fan generated manual referenced in a post here (Very good).

In HOMM5, I was never one who engaged in online playing with others, although I would play various multiplayer maps against computer.  Nor have I ever been tempted by other sorts of online games (MMORG?).  My first wonder is the mention of online playing for HOMM6.  Is there any reason that I should participate?  Does that give me (as a single player) any thing different from playing offline?

I have upgraded to patch 1.8 -- took a good while, but managed to get it done.

I've started what I assume is a tutorial campaign and progressed through one map, ready for the second one. Most of what happened was pretty intuitive and as I was used to from HOMM5.

I did have trouble figuring out how to build in a town, e.g. does the hero have to go back to build or is there a way to open up that menu without a hero in residence.

Another question had to do with getting troops from the town.  Is there a way without going back?

How can I arrange my troops on the battle field?  I got some priests and would like to have them and the crossbowmen on the rear ranks and protected by the other guys -- but have not found any method that does that.

Thanks, and it's good to be back.

1: Online vs offline
Playing online gives you access to the "Dynasty part" of the game. Which are Weapons that level up, Achivements that give you game point for some extra content like pre-made heroes, more dynasty traits or weapons and a few more things. Also when playing offline you are limited to only 2 heroes from each faction in multiplayer. Why online you have aprox 15 to buy (10 common ones are free) plus you can make any hero you want.

2: A hero does not have to be present in a town in order for you to build in it. The only two limits for construction you have are resources and one building each day.

3: Getting units.
There is no direct way how to get units from your town to your hero when he is in the field. But the new "Creature pool" system alowes you to buy all your units from all your castels in one town, provided you have the dwellings there. You also can use the Town portal buildings to quickly get back to your town. IDK if they are in the tutorial part yet. Until you have them, you'll have to use the old "Helping hero" startegy

4: Arranging your troop
Your hero has to know the Tactics ability. I'ts in the Tactics school and you can get it from level 1. Tactics II gives you an extra line.

Thanks guys.

In second map, I did discover that I could upgrade town without being there.  Reason for question was that I could not upgrade town in first map -- but I guess now that was just a built in limit, not because my hero wasn't there.

As to online versus offline -- if I decide to go online, can other people see what I am doing / have done?

They would not be able to see what you were actually doing, though. Don't worry, no one will be able to spy on you.
